Shaikh, Malik lead Warwickshire chase after leggie Tazeem stars again

Teenage spinner now has 15 wickets in five One-Day Cup appearances as Lancashire stumble

Warwickshire 253 for 5 (Shaikh 75, Malik 72, Blatherwick 4-48) beat Lancashire 249 for 9 (Tazeem 3-39) by five wicketsHamza Shaikh made 75 and legspinner Tazeem Ali took 3 for 39 to help Warwickshire beat Lancashire by five wickets at Aigburth and thereby consolidate their bid to reach the knock-out stages of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.Having restricted the home side to 249 for 9 on a pitch that aided spin, Ed Barnard’s side reached their target with 61 balls to spare, Kai Smith finishing on 45 not out having put on 77 with Shaikh. The one consolation for a severely under-strength Lancashire was that Jack Blatherwick took a career-best 4 for 48 but Marcus Harris’s side have now won just one of their seven matches in this competition and their own slim chances of making further progress had vanished with Wednesday’s defeat to Durham.Michael Jones was caught behind without scoring off Ethan Bamber’s second ball of the game but George Bell and Kesh Fonseka then batted positively against the Bears’ seamers to give their side a respectable platform of 69 for 1 after 15 overs. However, 33 of the next 35 overs were bowled by the Warwickshire spinners and scoring runs never looked as straightforward as it had done in the first hour of the game. Lancashire’s second-wicket pair put on 87 before Fonseka was caught at cover by Shaikh for 43 when driving Tazeem and the legspinner took his second wicket in his next over when Bell was leg-before for 46 when attempted to sweep.Harris and Harry Singh then tried to rebuild the innings with a stand of 68 in 13 overs only for Singh to depart for 29 when he pulled Rob Yates straight to Alex Davies at deep midwicket and the left-handed Harris to be bowled for 41 by a lovely offbreak from Yates.File photo: Shaikh led the way in Warwickshire’s run chase•ECB via Getty Images

Tazeem took his third wicket when George Balderson pulled him straight to Zen Malik and the remainder of Lancashire’s innings was dominated by Arav Shetty, who consolidated the good impression he has made during this competition by making 40 off 30 balls.Shetty, though, was one of two wickets to fall to Jake Lintott in the 49th over of the innings and the experienced Warwickshire wristspinner finished with 2 for 62 from his ten overs. Yates finished with 2 for 44 but it was Tazeem’s bowling that had taken the eye – and not for the first time this month.Warwickshire’s reply got off to a thunderous start, eight boundaries being struck and 44 runs scored in the opening four overs. But the visitors’ progress was slowed, first when Ed Barnard was caught by Bell when trying to scoop Blatherwick for 21 and then when Yates tried to slap Blatherwick through mid-on but only found Balderson’s safe hands and departed for 23.Former Lancashire batter Alex Davies was then surprised by the lift Blatherwick extracted from the Aigburth pitch and was caught behind for eight to leave his side on 71 for three in the eleventh over. That, though, was as near the home side got to upsetting the form book.Sheikh put on 97 with Malik, who reached his maiden List A fifty off 39 balls and seemed set for a century when his attempt to hit Blatherwick for six over mid-off only found the safe hands of Jones on the cover boundary and he departed for 72. Seemingly untroubled by this setback, Shaikh reached his own fifty off 74 balls and Warwickshire’s victory was all but certain long before Shaikh was bowled by Luke Hands when his side needed five runs.

Aston Villa strong candidates to sign £22m forward, Monchi personally keen

da bet7: Aston Villa have now emerged as strong candidates to sign a “fantastic” forward, with sporting director Monchi said to be keen.

Villa keen on new winger despite signing Sancho

da betsul: After a disappointing start to the Premier League season, with Unai Emery’s side failing to score a single goal in their opening three games, Jadon Sancho made a move to Villa Park on deadline day, arriving on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

However, both Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher aren’t convinced about the new Villa signing, with the former saying: “Unai Emery might be good for Sancho but I do think it’s a weird signing.

“Villa Park is a massive pitch and he’s got a lack of pace and a lack of legs. He’s got some brilliance but what’s his real strength? I don’t really know.”

Carragher added: “I don’t know what Sancho’s thing is. Every player has something but I can’t think in my head what he does. I’ve never seen it in my life. I haven’t.”

It remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old is able to prove the doubters wrong, but Aston Villa have already set their sights on a different winger, with a report from Spain revealing they are now strong candidates to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt.

NSWE to make January move for £40m striker who loves scoring vs Aston Villa

The Villans have identified a striker as their top January target.

ByDominic Lund Sep 8, 2025

Monchi is said to be personally keen on a move for Brandt, who could arrive at Villa Park on a free transfer next summer, if the winger doesn’t extend his contract with Dortmund, which expires in less than a year’s time.

Dortmund are set to try and negotiate a new deal with the winger, however, with the German club reluctant to lose him on a free, having been widely reportedly to have shelled out €25m (£22m) to sign the former Bayer Leverkusen man back in 2019.

"Fantastic" Brandt would be versatile option for Emery

The 29-year-old has featured in various positions throughout his career to date, including both wings, attacking midfield and central midfield, which would make the forward a versatile option for Emery, and he has received plaudits from Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Back in 2023, Kehl said: “His development has been great. He’s much more stable, robust and present. He has always shown in phases that he’s a fantastic player, but now he shows it over a longer period of time.”

The Bremen-born attacker has also outperformed Sancho across a number of key attacking metrics over the past year, ranking in the 97th percentile for assists per 90, when compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers.

As such, Brandt could be a solid signing, and his potential availability on a free transfer is a bonus for Villa, who are known to be treading a fine line from a PSR point of view.

Lights for Sabina Park day-night Test need final approval

Delays with the installation of the lights and scoreboard have raised concerns ahead of the third Test which is due to start on Saturday

Sabina Park’s preparations to host its first day-night Test when Australia visit next week are being pushed to the last minute. There had been initial delays to installing the new floodlights – originally they were due to be completed early this year, and then by May, but have only recently gone in – and during recent test events there was one area of the playing area, in front of the Kingston Cricket Club stand, that was found to not be sufficiently lit.The Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) remains confident that the ground will be ready for the third Test on July 12, but the facilities will need final ICC sign-off when officials arrive next week. The upgrading of the scoreboard and replay screen, funded by the Indian government, has also hit delays after further work was found to be needed when the older structure was removed.Related

Lights on for Jamaica? Cricket West Indies aims for day-night Australia Test

“I’m pretty sure about that [being ready],” JCA president Dr Donovan Bennett told the last week. “I’m a little bit uneasy because I would have hoped that everything would have been completed by now but when you’re doing construction, as you go along there are a lot of unforeseen circumstances that you’re challenged with which will push you back and that’s exactly what has happened with the lights and the scoreboard.”But we’re on target, I’m confident that we’ll be okay with both the lighting and the scoreboard for the 12th, when the games are scheduled, I’m sure we’ll be okay.”Bennett added: “Certain areas of the field are way above the international requirements but there’s one area that we need to work on to get it up…the English, who supplied the lights, they will be coming in on the seventh [Monday] with a laser beam to do the final fine-tuning.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Cricket West Indies are confident the match will be able to take place as a day-night Test. The venue is also due to host the first two matches of the T20I series under lights. The Caribbean has only hosted one previous day-night Test, when Sri Lanka played in Barbados in 2018. Australia have won 12 of their 13 day-night Tests, the only defeat being against West Indies at the Gabba last year, and have played comfortably the most given that every home summer features a pink-ball game.

Man City lead race for £69m Real Madrid star, set to explore January deal

da premier bet: Manchester City are leading the race for a “world-class” star, and they are now prepared to explore a deal in the January transfer window.

Man City looking at signing new forward after slow start

da bet7k: Man City’s opening match was full of promise, picking up an impressive 4-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but they have since gone on to lose their last two matches, and Rodri was very critical of the performance in the 2-1 loss at Brighton.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner said: “Some of the mistakes we are making are kids’ mistakes; you are not concentrating and paying attention. The reality is that we have to raise the level if we want to compete.”

Pep Guardiola initially attempted to ‘raise the level’ by overhauling his squad during the summer transfer window, although there were very few additions in forward areas, with the now injured Rayan Cherki the only outright attacker to move to the Etihad Stadium.

That is despite City being heavily linked with a new winger, and at one stage they were preparing an offer for Rodrygo, but the Brazilian ultimately ended up remaining at Real Madrid.

However, there has now been a new update on Man City’s pursuit of Rodrygo, with a report from Caught Offside revealing they are leading the race for the 24-year-old’s signature. It is claimed that the forward is seen as a “perfect fit” and a “key piece” in City’s fluid attacking system.

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal were informed that Madrid would be prepared to listen to offers of around €80m (£69m), which suggests it may take a similar amount to get a deal done this winter, with City now willing to explore a January move.

More rounded than Isak & Haaland: Man City must rue losing 'world's best CF'

Manchester City must regret selling a centre-forward sensation who could rival Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak

ByWill Miller Sep 6, 2025

Interestingly, Madrid are open to cashing-in on the Brazil international this summer, which may be music to Pep’s ears, given that the 54-year-old is known to be a long-term admirer.

"World-class" Rodrygo could take Man City's attack to next level

Oscar Bobb has made a decent start to the season, scoring at the Club World Cup, before going on to pick up an assist against Wolves on the opening day, but the Norwegian is still yet to truly establish himself at the top level.

As such, Pep may be keen to bring in a more proven winger this winter, and the Real Madrid forward is now a seasoned Brazil international, scoring seven goals in 33 appearances for his country, while also picking up 119 goal contributions in 272 outings for his current employers.

Journalist Kyle Bonn has previously praised the former Santos man for his ability to put away chances, which is evidenced by the fact he has averaged 0.35 non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, despite being expected to score 0.21 per 90.

Rodrygo could take Man City’s attack to the next level, so it is exciting news that they have now moved into pole position in the race for his signature.

Gill holds India together with second hundred as captain

England picked up five wickets on the first day at Edgbaston to leave the match in the balance

Vithushan Ehantharajah02-Jul-20257:22

Aaron: Bumrah can’t afford a huge workload spike

Stumps Shubman Gill’s roar said it all. At 10.30am, he fronted up at the toss to reveal Jasprit Bumrah would be rested for this second Test at Edgbaston. Then, shortly after 6pm, after everyone had broadly agreed that India were wrong to leave out their world-class quick when trailing 1-0 to England, Gill ripped off his helmet, pierced the air with a second shriek in two weeks, and then, as is custom, bowed to mark his seventh Test century.Explaining the decision to rest Bumrah, Gill revealed the India management felt Lord’s would offer their prized asset more than this Edgbaston track. And, as he saw out the day unbeaten on 114, he has at least done his bit to ensure India are not further behind when they head to London next week. At 310 for 5, they are in a promising position, albeit with a line-up harbouring fewer specialist batters.Related

No more Mr Nice Guy, as Woakes shows his inner steel

Death by a thousand cuts – Stokes waits and baits Jaiswal

If Gill’s first hundred in this series at Headingley announced his arrival as India’s Test captain, this one felt like a retaliation to its rigours and stresses. The news of Bumrah’s resting came as one of three changes that also drew unflattering attention to a touring party already shuffling the deckchairs. Akash Deep, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar drafted into the XI, B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur dropped.Ben Stokes’ decision to win the toss and bowl for a second consecutive match, and under bright sunshine once more, was broadly vindicated by a valiant showing from his quicks. Chris Woakes, with 2 for 59, was the pick of them and unlucky not to have more. All told, England did little wrong.Much was resting on Gill’s shoulders, even before the burden of being out in the middle for all of 216 deliveries started to jar his back. At 5.55pm, with 270 for 5 by India’s name and 86 by his, he called out the physiotherapist for some healing contortions. Resuming his innings, he was more intent on seeing out the remaining 35 minutes than reaching three-figures. That he got there quickly, with boundaries in consecutive deliveries, owed as much to a couple of filthy Joe Root offies as Gill’s penchant for the sweep.England celebrate KL Rahul’s wicket•Getty Images

Though the 11 fours to the milestone were crisp and spread relatively evenly – as many through cover (three) as between backward square-leg and midwicket – the 199 deliveries to reach it spoke volumes of Gill’s fight. He did not get ahead of himself, nor get fooled into ego games when Stokes posted three people at cover and one at short mid-on, daring him to beat any and all of them. And yet still after all that, there is more fighting to be done.Gill arrived at the crease on 95 for 2, six minutes before lunch, upon Brydon Carse’s dismissal of Karun Nair, promoted to No. 3 in Sai Sudharsan’s absence. That delivery – rising to take the splice off a length, through to Harry Brook at second slip – came in Carse’s second spell, after both he and Woakes opened proceedings with as close to the perfect first hour.Woakes was immaculate, prising out KL Rahul early for a torturous 2 from 26 deliveries in an impressive new-ball spell which read 1 for 15 from seven overs. That included four maidens on the bounce.Playing in just his fourth Edgbaston Test, the hometown hero was unlucky not to make more inroads after standing umpire Sharfuddoula turned down two close lbw appeals – the first against Yashasvi Jaiswal on 12, the second against Nair on 5.India rested Jasprit Bumrah, a decision that everybody had an opinion on•Associated Press

Both were reviewed only to come back with fractional umpire’s calls on the predicted path into the stumps. And it felt fitting that his second wicket trimmed the top of off stump, when Reddy pressed forward and left, only to be undone by wicked seam movement into the right-hand batter.Reddy was the second to fall in ten deliveries after Rishabh Pant inexplicably launched Shoaib Bashir into the hands of Zak Crawley at long-on. Perhaps Pant was fooled by the presence of a mid-on up in the circle, too. Either way, it was a gross error of judgement at a time when he and Gill were rebuilding steadily. Bashir, though, deserves credit for enticing the shot with a 74kph/46mph delivery that dipped late, in part due to a bolt upright seam. From twin centuries to a subdued 25, England were understandably giddy to have snared the batter in such fashion. The trigger for the initial diligence of the fourth-wicket stand was the loss of Jaiswal, at fault himself when slashing loosely at a wide delivery from Stokes, caught behind by Jamie Smith. As ever against England, Jaiswal looked in control of his own destiny, maintaining his streak of scoring at least 50 in all seven Tests against them.Yashasvi Jaiswal has played seven Tests against England and made 50-plus scores in each of them•Associated Press

He moved to his half-century off 59 deliveries, accelerating into it with the help of some wayward bowling from Josh Tongue. Three boundaries from the Nottinghamshire quick’s third over were followed by three-in-a-row from what turned out to be Tongue’s sixth and final one of his spell, as Stokes ordered his quicks to instigate their usual bumper ploy.A hook took Jaiswal to 49, before he leapt into a vicious cut high over point to pass fifty, followed by a celebratory four – his 11th – carved past third. And he showed patience through the middle session, driving Carse through cover five balls after lunch, and later guiding Tongue past the cordon for the last of 13 boundaries to take him to 81.Perhaps he ran out of patience when going after Stokes. What was certain was Gill would not make the same mistake. The route from fifty to hundred took 74 deliveries, and contained six fours to the five in the previous 125, but felt far more cautious alongside Ravindra Jadeja; the allrounder a sensible crutch for his skipper, even if he rests on a sprightlier 41 from 67 deliveries.Gill and Jadeja will pick up their stand in the morning on 99, well aware of the need to do much more as the last seasoned batters. The lessons learned from spurning positions of 430 for 3 and 333 for 4 in the first Test need to be put into practice.
