Sunderland eyeing move for "interesting" manager who could replicate Tuchel

da esoccer bet: It's been a difficult few months for Sunderland, who ended their Championship campaign with more of a whimper than anything else, but a new manager could now finally be on the horizon in what has been dubbed a shock move.

Sunderland manager news

da dobrowin: If the Black Cats could go back, then the decision to part ways with Tony Mowbray may have never been made, especially since his replacement was Michael Beale. The former Rangers boss endured a nightmare spell to all but end Sunderland's play-off hopes, before Mike Dodds was handed the role on an interim basis.

Sunderland told £3,000-a-week star who Mowbray loved is going to leave

It could be a frustrating summer for the Black Cats…

ByTom Cunningham May 11, 2024

By the end of the Championship season, Sunderland found themselves 16th with the top six nothing more than a pipe dream and now their next appointment must be the right one. In that regard, the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Steve Cooper have both been linked with moves to take the job, albeit without any announcement arriving.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Both managers took charge in the Premier League this season before losing their jobs at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest respectively. Out of a job ever since, the Sunderland job represents an opportunity that may come their way, unless the Black Cats opt for a reported shock target.

According to The Sun, Sunderland are eyeing a move for Bo Svensson, who left Mainz in November last year after two years in charge. The 44-year-old is reportedly a 'shock' target and could make his first foray into English football to follow in the footsteps of both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, who also went from Mainz to an eventual move to England, albeit with stops along the way.

Having previously been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Svensson is certainly a manager who is rated highly and could now be left with the responsibility of taking Sunderland back into the Championship's top six.

"Interesting" Svensson can thrive where Beale failed

In need of a revival, turning to Svensson could be Sunderland's best bet. The former Mainz boss guided the Bundesliga side up to eighth in his best season at the club, before a drop off resulted in his exit at the end of last year.

Utilising a 3-4-2-1 formation, which is interestingly the same system that Xabi Alonso has enjoyed so much success with at Bayer Leverkusen, Svensson's style would help keep up the form of Jack Clarke all whilst adding the defensive cover that the Black Cats so desperately lack these days.

Having thrived in Germany's top flight for a period of time, the Dane should be more than capable of stepping into the Championship to do the job that Beal ultimately failed to do when handed the responsibility.

The appointment, should it take place, represents a more exciting option than the more familiar Cooper and Heckingbottom too, especially if Sunderland allow Svensson to build a project. Described as "interesting" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the young manager is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming months, as the Black Cats weigh up their move.

Lauren Bell's four-for keeps Southern Vipers undefeated heading into final

Bell returns from England bubble with 4-36 as Vipers defeat South East Stars, despite Chloe Brewer’s 79

Lauren Bell’s return to Southern Vipers from the England training bubble proved a memorable one, as she claimed 4 for 36 to set up a four-wicket victory against South East Stars at The Kia Oval, leaving Vipers undefeated in the group stages of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and headed to next weekend’s final.Stars’ Chloe Brewer, making only her second appearance in the competition, hit an impressive 79 at the top of the order, but Stars squandered their solid start, collapsing from 145 for 3 to 227 all out in 48.3 overs. In what turned into a nail-biting run chase, it was the 72-run sixth-wicket partnership between Carla Rudd, who made 35, and Emily Windsor, with an unbeaten 47, which ultimately proved decisive for Vipers, Windsor hitting the winning runs in the 48th over with 16 balls to spare.Vipers had initially looked to be going steady at 70 for 1 after 15 overs, before back-to-back dismissals in the 16th and 17th gave them a wobble – captain Georgia Adams caught and bowled by Hannah Jones for 41, while Maia Bouchier fell lbw to leg-spinner Danielle Gregory for 10.With their captain and the leading competition run-scorer back in the dugout, Charlie Dean and Paige Scholfield began the necessary rescue work but could not see the job through, as Gregory and Jones struck in tandem again in their consecutive second spells, leaving Vipers five down. But Vipers’ experienced middle order eventually proved their mettle, ensuring they maintained their winning momentum going into the Trophy finalStars’ batting was expected to be buoyed in the last round by the return of England players Bryony Smith and Alice Davidson-Richards, but both fell for single figures – Smith the first wicket to fall, driving straight into the hands of Bouchier at extra cover in the fourth over.Instead it was two teenagers who did the heavy lifting for Stars, with 18-year-old Brewer well supported by 16-year-old Alice Capsey, as the pair shared a 77-run partnership for the third wicket. Coming together in the 12th over after Aylish Cranstone was lbw to Charlotte Taylor attempting a sweep, they remained at the crease until the 30th, moving the total along from 52 for 2 to 129 for 3.Both eventually fell in near-identical fashion, sending the ball up into the safe hands of Bouchier – the 21-year-old snaffling a total of four catches in her signature position at extra cover to leave her with a tally of 10 across the group stages, the highest of anyone in the competition.Bell’s reintroduction in the 33rd over helped further dent the Stars’ innings, with her victims including both top-scorer Brewer and Stars’ captain Tash Farrant, bowled by a brilliant yorker.Grace Gibbs attempted to salvage things with a rapid 19-ball 30 at the back end to take Stars past 200, including two beautifully struck sixes against the off-spin of Adams. However, two smart run-outs from Scholfield at midwicket finished the job, with Stars bowled out in the 49th – nine balls of their innings going unused.

Leeds were rinsed by “red flag” who earned more than Summerville

da realbet: Leeds United will be going into this coming weekend's final game of the regular Championship season overwhelmed with nerves and excitement, hoping that it can be the day where an immediate return to Premier League football is secured.

da betobet: Daniel Farke's men have certainly shown signs that the obvious stress that comes about with being deep in a promotion race has been getting to them in recent matches, with the 4-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers last time out weighing heavy on their minds.

Still, the German boss in the Elland Road hot-seat will pray that his troops can get over the line against Southampton regardless, with hopefully most of his first-teamers available to him to put in a promotion-winning performance in front of the expectant Whites masses at home.

Farke thankfully hasn't had to deal with a whole host of injury-prone individuals this season, with this constantly sidelined past Leeds face draining the club dry by the end of his stop-start five years at the club.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

Adam Forshaw's transfer to Leeds

Adam Forshaw would come into the building at Elland Road for a bumper £4.5m fee from Middlesbrough in 2018, having impressed the Whites across his four-season stay at the Riverside Stadium before sealing a move to nearby West Yorkshire.

Forshaw would accumulate 103 appearances for Boro before leaving for pastures new in Leeds, garnering a reputation for being a solid central midfielder in the EFL as was also seen in a more impactful spell at Brentford prior with 11 goals and 12 assists tallied up from 100 games for the Bees.

Poached by Leeds in January of the 2017-18 season, the new Whites recruit would initially settle in well with 12 appearances under his belt during his first few months acclimatising to his fresh surroundings.

Yet, his Whites career would soon start to unravel as his injury issues became a more and more persistent issue with everything coming to a head during the 2019-20 campaign under Marcelo Bielsa.

Forshaw would manage to make just seven appearances that season, during what should have been a joyful promotion campaign for the then-Leeds man.

But, a serious hip injury would end up sidelining him for 18 months instead.

The horrific hip issue would result in the 32-year-old being absent from action for a staggering 560 days in total, before a broken kneecap would do more damage when he was back during the 2021-22 season to keep up his wretched luck with injuries and maintain his reputation of being a permanent fixture in the Elland Road treatment room.

During Jesse Marsch's poor Whites reign, there was even a point where doctors close to the football club were left confused by what Forshaw's injuries actually were with medical expert Ben Dinnery stating that this was a major "red flag" when speaking to Football Insider at the time.

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw.

For a Leeds career that started with so much promise, with 31 appearances notched up during Bielsa's debut season on the scene in West Yorkshire, there must have been a feeling of 'what could have been' for Forshaw on the end of the Whites when he was released from his contract just last year.

But, with his recurring injury demons one major factor as to why this decision to cut ties was the best and most logical outcome, the former Middlesbrough man's excessive wage was also not justifiable any longer considering all the lengthy patches he found himself out of action for.

Adam Forshaw's wage at Leeds

On top of the £4.5m fee originally forked out to land Forshaw feeling like a steep fee with the context of these injuries coming into view, the £20k-per-week the ex-Boro midfielder earned whilst on the books at Leeds must have burned a considerable hole in the West Yorkshire side's pocket.

When adding up all the money that was unfortunately wasted on the injury-prone Leeds number four, the Whites were drained of £10.7m in total when that cash could have been ultimately put to better use.

When examining the current wage bill at Elland Road under Farke today, Crysencio Summerville amazingly earns £5k-per-week less than the 5 foot 9 dud now even with his heroics for the Whites in recent matches managing to put a smile on the anxiety-ridden Leeds supporters even when full-time results haven't all gone in their favour.

The electric Dutchman's two strikes away at Forshaw's former employers in Middlesbrough in the middle of April took his goal contributions total for the campaign to a very impressive 30 overall, dazzling Championship defences for fun even whilst earning a lesser wage than the injury-prone Forshaw.

Moreover, the likes of Archie Gray and Ilia Gruev also both earn a lesser pay packet than the former Whites face despite amassing 80 appearances between themselves as key parts of the Farke jigsaw this campaign – earning £5k-per-week and £15k-per-week respectively.

The 32-year-old hasn't yet fallen victim to another serious injury like he managed at Leeds moving onto fellow Championship sides Norwich City and Plymouth Argyle after being released, but he still is finding his minutes to be limited and infrequent to see out his playing days.

Still, he won't complain at the millions he managed to rake in whilst playing in West Yorkshire when compared to his lesser Pilgrims wage now even if it came at the expense of his ex-employers.

Adam Forshaw's continued issues

The experienced midfielder has only managed to make 20 appearances for both the Canaries and Argyle since leaving Leeds behind, finding his contract at Carrow Road prematurely ripped up just a matter of months into his free transfer down to Norfolk.

At Home Park now, Forshaw isn't quite burning a similar hole in Leeds' pocket when it comes to wage costs to the relief of the Devon-based club – earning £5k less in salary costs in his new location at £15k-per-week.

Leeds will just be thankful that Forshaw is no longer a problem for them to try and fix, with the midfielder's fitness a constant source of worry for past Whites managers such as Marsch and Bielsa.

Farke doesn't have to put up with this anxiety going into his side's pivotal final day clash with Southampton to his relief, hoping just one more second-tier victory will be enough to seal an instant return up to the Premier League for Leeds.

Youth, grannies, structure, funding: How Ireland can build on memorable England win

Ireland’s rebuilding paid dividends at the Ageas Bowl, but can that win be a launchpad?

Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie admitted that he would watch Tuesday’s win against England “four or five times” during his 14-day quarantine period upon returning to Dublin. But there’s no doubt that, along with the rest of the Irish hierarchy, he will be thinking of ways to build on that result, too. Here are five ways to do just that…Ireland’s XI for the final match had an average age of just 26, making it their youngest ODI side since 2010; only two years earlier, against Zimbabwe in March 2018, they had fielded their oldest-ever team. In this series, Balbirnie took the bold call to leave out his predecessor, with 20-year-old Harry Tector preferred to William Porterfield at No. 4. He also backed Gareth Delany (23), Lorcan Tucker (23) and Curtis Campher (21) throughout, while Josh Little (20) impressed in the second ODI.There are hopes that either JJ Garth, a reserve throughout this series, or Jacob Mulder can fill the long-term wristspinning void, while there are now signs of genuine seam-bowling depth, with the quicks performing creditably in this series despite injury limiting Barry McCarthy to five legitimate deliveries.”It’s been a process since May 2019, really, since that ODI in Malahide,” said Niall O’Brien, the former Ireland wicketkeeper. “[Head coach] Graham Ford and the selectors have had an eye on the future. My feeling is that they’ve made the decision to go with the youngsters and they’re going to pursue it.ALSO READ: Echoes of Bangalore as Ireland chase 329 in historic win”They’re not going to learn anything about these players if they’re sitting on the bench. We may need to endure some tough days at the office, but who’s to say if they had played the more experienced heads the results would have been any different? The big thing is that they just need more cricket.”More regular fixtures against top opposition through the World Cup Super League will mean that those players are thrown in at the deep end. “There’s no hiding place anymore,” Balbirnie said. “Guys coming into the squad for the first time are going to be coming up against some of the best players in the world from the off. It’s sink or swim.”And while their returns in the series were mixed, the young players have to be backed all the way. Ireland have struggled to replace their golden generation over the last decade, but there are finally signs of a talented group coming through together. They must nurture them.Curtis Campher calmly upper-cuts for runs•Getty Images

Embrace the ‘granny rule’Irish sport has benefitted hugely from the ‘granny rule’ over the years, so called due to FIFA’s eligibility regulations which allow a player to represent a country so long as one grandparent was born there. Ireland’s broadly-spread diaspora – and relatively low barriers for getting a passport – have therefore enabled various players to represent their national teams, despite limited ties to the country.Curtis Campher is the latest example of how cricket has benefitted, following the path of other adopted Irishmen like Trent Johnston, Alex Cusack and Tim Murtagh. Campher happened to mention to Niall O’Brien that he had an Irish passport while batting in a tour game in early 2018. His initial hope was to play some club cricket, but within two years he had signed a development contract. He is still yet to play a match on Irish soil, but is already their most promising talent thanks to a stunning breakout series.”I don’t have any real problem with it,” O’Brien said. “You don’t just want anybody coming over – you don’t want to be emailing every county player in case they have Irish heritage. But if you can find someone like Campher, who is going to live in Dublin and play club cricket for YMCA, and really buy into it, then why not?”Nick Larkin, Daniel Worrall, Matt Dunn and South Africans Graham Hume and Ruhan Pretorius are among the players that could be convinced to qualify. And if there any feelings of unease, Ireland need only look to Hove as a reminder that the talent drain to England is still firmly in process. Sussex’s 19-year-old offspinner Jack Carson took 5 for 52 against Hampshire this week: he was brought up in County Armagh and played age-group cricket for Ireland, but has set out his stall to follow the Morgan, Joyce and Rankin route. One of the drawbacks of Ireland being awarded Test status is that their players can no longer play as locals in county cricket – unless, like Murtagh and Stuart Poynter, they decide to give up their international careers. Paul Stirling has an overseas contract with Northants for the upcoming T20 Blast but is currently the only current Ireland player who will play for a county this season.Previously, even being part of a county’s staff was a significant boost for Irish players. “It was pivotal,” O’Brien said. “I wouldn’t have reached anywhere near the level of consistency and professionalism I did without county cricket – no way.”Even if I wasn’t in the first team in Kent, I was still working with Geraint Jones, Matt Walker, Rob Key. Back in those days, you’d have been left to your own devices. The structure, coaching and facilities in Ireland now are a lot better, but the loss of county cricket to the Irish game is significant. It’ll take a long time to replicate and get players to that standard.”While the chances of being signed for a full season as an overseas are slim, some Ireland players should be able to put their names in the hat for 50-over cricket next season, with two overseas players permitted per side in the Royal London Cup and the best internationals likely to be signed up for the Hundred. If agents pitch them as young, talented and – most importantly – cheap options for teams’ second slots, then players like Balbirnie, Campher and Mark Adair should find suitors.A more radical move would be an attempt to enter that competition, possibly under the guise of Ireland Wolves, the national ‘A’ team. Ireland’s players got regular cricket through the Friends Provident/C&G Trophy from 2006-09 after it moved to a round-robin group stage, but rejected an invitation for the CB40 in 2010 citing a busy international schedule. The number of mid-summer fixtures has hardly increased since then, but sending a second-string side could be a worthwhile compromise.Gareth Delany pulls the ball away•Getty Images

Perhaps the Wolves entering the Royal London Cup is unlikely, but it would not even be worth speculating about if Irish domestic cricket was restructured. Ford said before the England series: “We’ve got to be honest and accept that the step-up from club cricket and inter-pro cricket to international cricket is pretty huge.”The inter-provincial system has three teams – Leinster Lightning, Northern Knights, North-West Warriors – and a fourth (Munster Reds) in T20 cricket. Leinster have been dominant across formats, with most of the country’s top players at Dublin clubs, and Balbirnie has suggested that some kind of player draft should be used to ensure good young players are not being left out.”We need the best 33 players playing, no matter what the situation, no matter who they’re playing for,” he told the Telegraph. “Sometimes Leinster, my team, can be quite strong and three or four lads will miss out who are definitely good enough to play in the competition but because of the region they’re in they don’t.”ALSO READ: Balbirnie, Stirling underline importance as Ireland take positive approachMeanwhile, Ireland cannot afford the Euro T20 Slam to fail again in 2021, after two aborted launches. “The purpose wasn’t for it to be a business proposition, it was primarily a performance one,” Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland’s CEO, told ESPNcricinfo earlier this year. “It came from a place of the three nations [Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland] not having too many players participating in global T20 competitions, and therefore Ireland’s ranking suffered.”If that is the case, it may be sensible to cut ties with the league’s organisers, who ran into financial difficulties during the Global T20 Canada in 2019, and run a lower-key competition among the three boards, with lower salary bands for overseas players and fewer of them per team.FundingWhile any of these steps may provide some benefits, the real silver bullet for Ireland is increased funding. The costs of staging cricket with no permanent home ground are eye-watering – hosting the Pakistan Test at Malahide in 2018 was estimated to cost around €1 million – while Deutrom has regularly pointed out that Ireland receive a paltry annual sum from the ICC compared to other full members.”The costs associated with delivering to Full Membership standards and fulfilling a much greater number of international fixtures each year has not been matched by expected revenues,” Deutrom said in December 2019.”This has been a great disappointment to us as we had hoped to have had an injection of new money into the sport from full membership that would have not only helped fulfil fixtures, but invest in infrastructure and the grassroots game across Ireland. We have been told that this expected shortfall is set to continue until 2023 when a new ICC Funding Model will be developed that will hopefully provide a greater share of the overall allocation, although of course that is still subject to discussion among all the members.”With financial reserves low even before the Covid-19 crunch, the reality for Ireland is that funds will be stretched over the next few years. Until that changes, any steps forward will be incremental.

"Can’t see Moyes staying" – Another West Ham twist in Monday manager update

da stake casino: West Ham United are preparing for life without David Moyes in the hotseat after reports claiming that they were "one step away" from landing his replacement on Sunday were followed by another twist on Monday morning.

Moyes hanging by thread after Palace humiliation

da bet nacional: It was another disastrous afternoon for West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday, as they fell three goals behind to Crystal Palace inside 20 minutes on their way to a 5-2 defeat at Selhurst Park.

Torn apart on a regular basis, they looked a shadow of the side that lifted the Conference League trophy just 12 months ago, and the result leaves them with just one win in their last five Premier League games, form which has seen their chances of European football next season take a massive hit with four games left of the season.

After the game, Moyes didn't hold back on his side: “The first half was as bad as I have seen us play. We have had three or four of these incidents this season, games very similar, where I could not believe the team.

“I don’t think the team, in the three years I have been here, have gone to the depths in the three of four games this year. Today, the first half was unacceptable. The players got praised for their performance on Thursday night but today was so bad I cannot put it into words.

"I have got to say I have not had many teams who have played like that in my whole career.”

When quizzed on if his future will be taken out of his hands, Moyes was similarly abrupt: "If it is, then it is, fine – no problem."

West Ham new manager update

As per reports coming out of Italy on Sunday evening [via Sport Witness], West Ham are closing in on recruiting a new manager for next season. That boss comes in the form of ex-Real Madrid, Sevilla and most recently Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui, who the club reportedly held fresh and positive talks with on Sunday after the defeat at Palace.

So much so, in fact, that a move was considered just "one step away" from being confirmed, which would see Lopetegui pen a three-year contract with the Hammers. However, The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg took to X on Monday morning to dispute the rumours about the Spaniard, albeit he did confirm Moyes is probably finished.

Lopetegui has not been in work since leaving Wolves over a transfer policy dispute (amid severe financial fair play concerns) just days before the new season started, but managed ten wins during his spell at Molineux (in 27 games), including one over West Ham.

With Moyes seemingly captaining a sinking ship, a change is best for all parties come this summer. Lopetegui has the experience step into the void, but there appears to be plenty of twists and turns to come yet.
