West Indies must consign Ageas Bowl win to 'history' – Phil Simmons

Coach urges players to guard against complacency as Windies target rare overseas series win

Phil Simmons, West Indies’ coach, has challenged his players to consign the events of the first Test at the Ageas Bowl to “history”, as they look to guard against complacency and close out their first overseas series win against a leading Test nation in more than a quarter of a century.Speaking after his team’s return to Emirates Old Trafford ahead of Thursday’s Test, Simmons praised the resolve of his players in Sunday’s four-wicket win in Southampton – in particular Jermaine Blackwood for his decisive 95 on the final day of the contest, and Shannon Gabriel, whose haul of nine wickets across the two innings demonstrated his return to full fitness following ankle surgery. The result means that West Indies have now won four of last six Tests against England – dating back to their famous run-chase at Headingley in 2017, and encompassing their 2-1 series win in the Caribbean in early 2019. However, they have not won a series in England since 1988, and Simmons acknowledged that it would be their duty to start from scratch in the coming days.”For me it was a great win because I think that it signified a lot of hard work being done by the players over the last four or five weeks,” he said. “But you don’t come to England and just win a Test match. It was a top-class Test match, with good cricket played by both teams, and even coming down to the last hour, it could have gone either way.”To come out on top. It’s been great for us, and it was important because you don’t want to have to chase England in England. So the chasing is from their point of view now. But you guard against complacency by just trying to do the same things you did before the first Test. Right now that Test match is history. We’ve got to be thinking about what we do from Thursday to Monday.”West Indies successfully backed up their first-Test victory in Barbados last year with an equally impressive win in Antigua, but the challenge of replicating that form in an overseas campaign is rather harder.Leaving aside their tours of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, they have only taken the lead in the first Test of an away series on three occasions since 1995. In that year’s tour of England, they were pegged back to a 2-2 draw after a crushing win at Headingley, and were then overturned 3-1 on their next visit to England in 2000, and 2-1 in South Africa in 2007-08.ALSO READ: ‘When he crosses the line he gives his all’ – Holder on BlackwoodHowever, the circumstances of the current England tour are different in a number of key respects – firstly, the absence of a home crowd, which England arguably noticed during a flat day in the field in West Indies’ first innings, but perhaps more significantly, the extended preparation period, which may have been forced on the tourists by the Covid-19 outbreak, but which Simmons said harked back to his own playing days in the 1980s and 1990s.”I think that has been the biggest influence on the performance,” he said. “I think the fact that we’ve been here for that period of time, we’ve had quality bowling in the nets because we’ve had nearly 11 seamers here, you can’t put a price on that.”I think that’s something that we have to look at. I don’t like to go back into my [playing] days, but we would come to England and play something like three or four proper warm-up games before the first Test, and we would also have three-day or four-day games in between the Test matches. So I think that period of training goes a long way to how we performed in that first Test.”One of the key beneficiaries of the lead-up time was Gabriel, who had not originally been named in West Indies’ first-choice 14, but was added to the squad after proving his fitness in both the nets and the intra-squad contests at Old Trafford. His hostility in both England innings echoed his crucial contributions to the win in the Caribbean last year, and Simmons took particular pleasure in his two-wicket burst on the pivotal fourth evening of the match.”The hardest time for bowlers, after bowling from the morning, is that last session,” Simmons said. “To see him and Alzarri [Joseph] come up trumps in that session is so pleasing to us. With him coming back from that ankle surgery and working as hard he has worked since we’ve been here, it was a joy to see him successful in that period.”Blackwood also proved his mettle, and not for the first time against England, against whom he now averages 55.00 in seven Tests. He withstood intense pressure on the final day – both from the scoreboard, which read 27 for 3 with John Campbell retired hurt, and from England’s fielders, with Ben Stokes in his ear from the outset as they attempted to goad him into a rush of blood.”I think he must be commended because he has worked very hard on trying to get that temperament right for each part of his innings,” Simmons said. “As we saw in the first innings, it was still there a bit, but in the second he controlled it a lot better. And that helped him to bring home the game for us.”Blackwood himself conceded that England’s words were “nothing bad, just cricket” and Simmons accepted that it was all part and parcel of the Test match battle.”It’s what I would have done too,” he said. “Try to get him irrational, but I think he held his own. He looked at the situation and played it as well as he could have. So that shows that his mindset is improving, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Arsenal could sign their answer to Kane in "insane" £64m Jesus upgrade

da 888casino: It's been a decent week for Arsenal in the Premier League. Their draw away to Manchester City and wins at home to Luton Town have kept them within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.

da lvbet: Mikel Arteta's side will need to win most, if not all, of their remaining games to lift the title this season, but with their goalscoring form since the turn of the year, that's entirely possible.

However, at the start of next term, Gabriel Jesus could find his game time more limited; at least, that looks like it could be the case based on recent reports linking the club to a new number nine who has been compared to Harry Kane in the past.

Latest Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from the Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal are among several top fight clubs across Europe interested in signing Bologna's talented striker, Joshua Zirkzee, this summer.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

The report revealed that while AC Milan would likely be the forward's preferred destination, he would not be opposed to moving to the Premier League, with both the Gunners and Manchester United being the most interested English clubs.

Bayern Munich has a buyback clause worth around €40m – £34m – but it appears clear that neither party is interested in making that happen, so the Rossoblu will be able to name their price once the window opens.

The Italian report claims that Bologna considers Zirkzee's situation similar to Rasmus Hojlund's last summer. So, a price tag of around €75m has been discussed for clubs outside of Italy, which comes to about £64m. While that would be a serious investment from Arsenal, he might just be worth it.

How Zirkzee compares to Jesus

So the first and arguably most important thing to consider with any new potential striker signing is how their output compares to the forward they could replace, and in this case, Zirkzee comes out just ahead.

In his 31 games this season, the Dutchman has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.8 games. In contrast, Jesus' return of eight goals and five assists in 27 appearances means he averages a goal involvement every two games.

Okay, so what about their underlying numbers, then? Well, here it is a lot closer, and it's actually the Brazilian who just about edges it in the most relevant metrics for a starting number nine.

For example, the former Manchester City ace produces higher expected goals and assists figure, provides more actual assists, completes more progressive carries, and takes more shots on target per 90.

However, it isn't all that one-sided, as Bologna's "insane athlete", as data analyst Ben Mattinson described him, scores more goals, completes more progressive passes, and has a better conversion rate from his shots on target, all per 90.

Moreover, while it seems from the surface that Jesus is the better creator, Mattinson has argued that it is the ineffective attack of Bologna that is hampering the 6 foot 4 titan's creative numbers and that, in reality, his "his intelligence as a creator & facilitator is out of this world."

The respected analyst has drawn comparisons to former Tottenham Hotspur forward Kane, in that Zirkzee is burdened with the vast majority of the creative work in his current side and if he was placed in a team with goalscoring wingers and midfielders, his "productivity would sky-rocket."

Arsenal could sign the ideal Martinelli upgrade in "on fire" £26m ace

The incredible talent would be the perfect competition for the Brazilian.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 5, 2024

Ultimately, Arsenal have a great forward in Jesus, and he's likely to play some sort of role at the club for a number of years to come, but if they have the opportunity to sign Zirkzee this summer and bring him into a team with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka out wide, they absolutely should.

Having seen the havoc that Kane – who boasts 213 Premier League goals – has wreaked across north London, snapping up a similar figure would be a welcome treat for the Emirates side.

Rahul Dravid says bio-secure bubbles not a foolproof route to resuming cricket

What happens if someone tests positive within the bubble, created at great expense, he asks

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-2020

ICC/Getty Images

Rahul Dravid believes sport across the globe will need a controlled lifting of restrictions if it is to thrive again, and playing in a bio-secure bubble will not always be a viable solution even as governing bodies grapple with the prospect of resuming behind closed doors in the Covid-19 era.”A lot of these things are going to be dictated by the situation and how it evolves,” Dravid said on a webinar organised by YUVA, a non-profit organisation for underprivileged sportspersons in India. “In case of the bio-bubble, you do all the testing and quarantine and then on day two of the Test match, what if one player, for example, tests positive? What happens then?”The rules, as they stand now, will see the Public Health Department coming in and putting everyone in quarantine, that ends the Test, that series, even though they may have incurred a lot of expense to create that [secure] environment.”So we have to work with the health authorities and governments to work out ways in which, if someone tests positive, you don’t cancel the full tournament. If we are talking of the environment of sport, given the rules that exist now, it will be difficult for sport to resume.”Dravid also felt quarantining players for a set period before and after the event in a crowded cricket calendar may not be entirely practical. He was responding to a question on the possibility of West Indies playing in England in a “bio-secure” environment, with lengthy preparation times. As things stand, West Indies are prepared to travel to England a month in advance to acclimatise and complete their quarantine before playing a three-Test series. That could mean the England players, as per reports, may need to be away from their families for up to nine weeks, until the end of the three-Test series against Pakistan in August.”A lot of these rules will have to keep changing. It is a bit unrealistic to have things at the level the ECB is talking about for every series [14-day quarantine period before and after every series],” Dravid said. “Obviously, the ECB is very keen to conduct these couple of series because they have had no other cricket and it is right in the middle of the season, and they’re keen to do this so they are potentially creating the bubble and managing it that way.”It’s going to be unrealistic for everyone to be able to do that all the time. With the kind of calendar that we have, the kind of travelling involved for the players, it’s virtually going to be impossible to do that. We’re hoping things will evolve and we will find a better way.”Football leagues in Germany and Korea have resumed behind closed doors. There have been talks within the BCCI of the IPL adopting a similar route, too. Dravid felt such a possibility could only benefit richer boards or leagues.”The Bundesliga, Korean League or specific leagues where players live and train in one city, that can be managed at an elite level where there is money and infrastructure isn’t a problem,” Dravid explained. “As you go down where sports don’t have the kind of money some of these football leagues or other leagues have, it’s going to be difficult to do that. You have to find a balance to this situation. If we want to stick by the rules we’re talking about now, it’s unrealistic to start sport. There has to be easing of certain restrictions, even when people test positive, for sport to fully resume.Dravid also underlined how crowds were integral to the sporting experience and equated elite sportspeople to “performers” who thrived on the big stage. While he didn’t think player performance would be directly affected by playing behind closed doors, he said athletes wouldn’t have the “stage to perform”.”Elite sportspeople will adjust at a professional level,” he said. “They will find a way to not let it affect performances to a large extent. They all take pride in their performances, so they will find a way to deal with it. I don’t think there will be a dip in performance because of this but, as a whole, the experience won’t be the same.”Players are like performers, they like to play in front of big crowds. They’re used to engaging with the fans. That adds an incredible complexity to the game. The interactions between fans and players will be missed, like the experience of playing in front of a packed house in Kolkata or anywhere in the world. As players, you want to perform. There’s a sense of wanting to perform as an artiste or actor or performer, and the players would miss that.”

Man City scouts now wowed by "electric" new Doku who could cost just £30m

da premier bet: Following the success of Jeremy Doku – a classic winger who thrives in one-on-one situations – Manchester City have reportedly turned their attention towards repeating that piece of transfer genius this summer.

Man City transfer news

da bet7: The Manchester club have signed a number of wingers over the years, with Pep Guardiola's search often going back and forth between players who are more disciplined and wingers who are more eccentric such as Leroy Sane, Riyad Mahrez and now Doku.

"Can confirm" – Fabrizio Romano namechecks Man City in Florian Wirtz update

He would flourish under Pep Guardiola.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 20, 2024

The latter's arrival last summer suggests that, as things stand, Guardiola has turned his system towards players more capable of driving forward rather than those who slow things down and pick out the perfect pass. And we could see even more signs of that change this summer, as City look to sign another player of Doku's calibre.

The slight adjustment doesn't come as too much of a surprise given that Guardiola very rarely isn't in the middle of developing his own system, but those at The Etihad will hope to see it at least play a part in a return to dominance after struggling to get a full grip on the Premier League title race in the current campaign.

What's more, part of that adjustment could yet include the arrival of Johan Bakayoko. According to Sacha Tavolieri, Manchester City scouts have been impressed with Bakayoko and the Premier League champions could secure a deal for as little as €35m (£30m) for the PSV Eindhoven winger this summer.

Bakayoko, still only 20-years-old and one year younger than Doku, has played with the Manchester City man on international duty with Belgium and represents the next era of their stars following the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Vincent Kompany. Following Doku's success on the left-hand side, Guardiola could now land a similar player on the opposite flank in Bakayoko this summer.

"Electric" Bakayoko is similar to Doku

Two Belgian wingers of similar age, Bakayoko has more than earned the chance to follow in the footsteps of Doku this summer. The latter has enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in Manchester, scoring three goals and assisting a further five whilst lighting up the Premier League with his impressive one-on-one ability.

Lighting up European football, it's no shock that Bakayoko is reportedy attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City. If they are looking to replicate Doku on the opposite side, then they should turn to the PSV star, who has earned high praise from Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig.

When the transfer window swings open, City may get themselves one of the bargains of the summer if they manage to land Bakayoko for as little as £30m to repeat their Doku genius.

Currently, Celtic are top of the Scottish Premiership, however, rivals Rangers have a game in hand and trail by just one point. It promises to be one of the closest title races in recent memory, however, attention behind the scenes at Parkhead appears to be turning towards the upcoming transfer window.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart will retire at the end of the campaign, leaving Celtic on the search for a new first-choice shot-stopper. There have been specific targets mentioned, such as Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, who the Hoops would love to sign.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Reds ‘keeper could be tempted to move to Glasgow, whereas Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir is seen as a potential alternative option. Whoever arrives to replace Hart may require a big transfer fee, and it looks as if Celtic are in a good position to do stump up the cash.

Guidi shares exciting Celtic transfer update

Journalist Guidi, talking to The Go Radio Football Show, relayed by 67 Hail Hail, was speaking about Celtic’s need for a new goalkeeper to replace Hart this summer. He said that the Hoops are “back” in the market to sign a player worth around £6m-£7m, should one emerge on their radar.

“I’ve said many times. I said it last season, if Celtic can find a Jack Butland scenario or another Joe Hart scenario where it’s a free transfer or a £1m quid transfer fee and then a nice fat contract, then go for it.

“But see if you need to spend £6m-£7m then go and do it. And I’ve been told that Celtic are back in that market.

“The days of this £3m almost like a ceiling, has been wiped out. If players become available at £6m-£7m then Celtic are very much back in the market at that level. And that’s the way it should be, particularly for a goalkeeper.”

This is an exciting update for the Hoops, showing that the funds are seemingly there at Parkhead for the club to splash the cash on new signings in the region of £6m-£7m, something that wasn't done this season.

Celtic may now sell “wonderful” star player in huge Parkhead exit

What a massive blow this could be.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 24, 2024

Alongside a new goalkeeper, a winger and striker are also wanted by Rodgers and Celtic, so it could be a busy and expensive summer transfer window ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and Jota's big-money exit to Saudi Arabia last year alongside Matt O'Riley's possible departure could fund a number of incomings.
