Will Young marked his Nottinghamshire debut with an undefeated hundred to anchor the visitors’ response on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Surrey at the Kia Oval. The New Zealand international, who is on a three-match contract with the county, provided immediate value with a fluent knock of 106 not out that guided them to 248 for 5 at the close, trailing Surrey by 107. Young shared a second-wicket partnership of 134 with Haseeb Hameed, who hit 67, while Surrey’s Jamie Overton took two wickets on his return to bowling action for the first time this summer after recovering from a back injury. The home side had earlier posted 355 all out in their first innings, with Nottinghamshire allrounder Lyndon James picking up the last two wickets to register career-best figures of 6 for 74.Resuming at 339 for 8 in the morning, Surrey increased their total by another 16 – all of those scored by Overton, who bludgeoned a six and two fours off Dane Paterson to finish on 30 not out. Overton’s efforts were enough to secure a third batting bonus point before James quickly wrapped up the innings by claiming the scalps of Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall in successive deliveries.Nottinghamshire’s openers dug in at the start of their reply, with Worrall and Sean Abbott bowling a consistent line and the latter also found some movement to dislodge Ben Slater, snapped up by Tom Latham at second slip.Having survived an early scare when he slashed Abbott just over the slip cordon, Hameed settled down to some crisp strokeplay as he dispatched Jordan Clark twice to the boundary in quick succession. Meanwhile, Young looked unruffled alongside Hameed, consistently punishing any stray deliveries on the leg side and had almost caught up with his partner when Nottinghamshire went to lunch. The New Zealander was first to his half-century with a straight drive for four off Overton and Hameed followed suit, drilling the seamer to the midwicket fence in his next over but, with leaden skies giving way to rain shortly before 3pm, the visitors’ progress was held up at 139 for 1.After a false start, the players eventually returned an hour and a half later, with Worrall looking most likely to unlock the partnership as he repeatedly beat the bat and unleashed a skidding delivery that Young only just dug out.It was Hameed who eventually fell, pouched at first slip after prodding at Worrall outside off stump and there was a close call for Young on 68 when he defended a ball from Abbott that bounced back up off the turf and missed his stumps by a fraction. But the 30-year-old – who registered a Championship century and four fifties during his stint with Northamptonshire last year – went on to reach three figures from 192 balls, crashing Lawes off the back foot for four.Easing his way into a decent rhythm, Overton gained reward for his endeavours, squaring Joe Clarke up for a leading edge that sailed into the hands of Latham at gully before having Tom Moores caught in the slips. Those successes sandwiched another wicket as Surrey deviated from their all-seam tactic by deploying the offbreaks of Will Jacks, a move that paid off as his fifth ball clipped Matthew Montgomery’s bails.

No Azulão, virou meio-campista.

A better signing than Bijol: Leeds open talks to sign £17m "animal"

da marjack bet: Leeds United now know what their opening set of fixtures in the Premier League look like, with August appearing to be a tough starting month for the already nervous Whites.

da bet7: Indeed, top-flight stalwarts Everton, Arsenal, and Newcastle United all come in quick succession for Daniel Farke’s men to get the new season underway, with Leeds fans just praying an early result can be picked up to ease the expected anxiety around Elland Road.

Of course, there is still some time to go before Leeds’ Premier League adventure kicks off, with the off-season handing the newly promoted team plenty of opportunities to snap up some top-flight-ready talents.

Leeds in talks to sign £17m star

Jaka Bijol and Lukas Nmecha – who both played in the Serie A and the Bundesliga last season – have already entered the building but there is plenty more on the way for Leeds.

Indeed, the West Yorkshire titans could be about to secure an even better signing than their new 6-foot-3 Slovenian, with a Premier League-proven battler now on their shopping list.

According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, Leeds are in talks regarding the signature of Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Igor Julio.

The report states that significant funds have come Leeds’ way after the glory of promotion, with the Whites desiring a player of Igor’s characteristics to try and consolidate as a Premier League-capable outfit.

Valued at around the £17m mark according to Transfermarkt, it will be intriguing to see who comes out on top in the race to land the Seagulls’ number three, with the report revealing that Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are other keen parties from England.

Leeds will hope they can put their newfound millions to good use by landing the Brazilian, with Igor already having an upper hand over his potential new teammate in Bijol in being instantly ready for the challenge ahead of the English top-flight.

Why Igor would be an even better signing than Bijol

Of course, plenty will be expected of Bijol on his arrival in England, but it will take him time to get up to speed with his daunting new environment.

On the contrary, the imposing South American already has two top-flight campaigns under his belt on the South Coast, with the 27-year-old consistently sticking out as a reliable member of the Seagulls camp when thrown into action.

When glancing at the table above, it’s clear that the Brazilian shines with the ball planted at his feet, with a stunning 94% pass accuracy averaged during his debut Premier League campaign for Brighton.

This unerring ability to pick out a pass under pressure will stand him in good stead to shine under Farke’s wing, therefore, with Leeds defensive mainstay Joe Rodon successfully completing 92% of his passes last season.

This is where Bijol falls flat in comparison, with the Slovenian only average an 84% pass accuracy across the same time span.

On top of that, Igor has even more top-flight experience on his side when weighed up next to the ex-Udinese man, notably when on the books of Fiorentina.

104 Serie A appearances came his way when plying his trade in Florence. To add context, Bijol falls short of that amount by 14 games.

Of course, Bijol will have a key role to play next season as Leeds adjust to their new level.

But, having also recently been lauded as an “animal” by ex-Seagulls coach Inigo Calderon, picking up Igor could be just what Leeds crave in winning a battler ready to roll his sleeves up for the cause, with the 27-year-old well aware of what it takes to be a success in such a gruelling division.

Smith: Missing the 10k-run mark ‘hurt a little bit’

Steven Smith has set his sights on the 2028 Olympics, declaring he wants to prolong his short-form career and return to Australia’s T20 team for the Los Angeles Games.Smith produced one of the finest T20 innings of his career on Saturday, smashing an unbeaten 121 from 64 balls for Sydney Sixers against Perth Scorchers to set up a BBL victory.Australia’s former T20 captain hit seven sixes in his knock, manipulating Scorchers’ bowling and getting inventive in his efforts to target the short boundary.Related

Stats – Smith, Short shatter BBL batting records on Super Saturday

Smith has become something of a forgotten force in T20 cricket in recent years, and even missed selection in Australia’s squad for last year’s T20 World Cup. He has also been overlooked in the past four IPL auctions, the only franchise cricket he played last year being for Washington in the USA’s Major League Cricket. But Smith’s BBL form has regularly shown he is among the best T20 openers in the country, hitting three centuries in his last seven matches in the competition. The trio of tons brought him level with Ben McDermott for the most in tournament history, with Smith having played just 32 games to McDermott’s 100.His average of 45.88 is the highest of any local, while he holds the sixth best strike-rate of any player with 146.3.But Smith says he does not want to be a domestic-player only in the shortest format, eying off a return to Australian colours.”I’d like to play the Olympics, I reckon that would be cool,” Smith said. “We’ll see how far I go in terms of long-form cricket. But I am going to play short-form cricket for a while I think when I do finish. You never know. There are a lot of good young kids who are smacking the ball out of the park.”Steven Smith was spectacular at the SCG•Getty Images

Smith will be 39 by the time cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028, with the sport featuring for the first time since 1900 when only Great Britain and France featured. He has not yet outlined his retirement plans for red-ball cricket, but has made no secret of his desire to play T20s longer into the future.Smith entered Saturday’s game with virtually no T20 preparation, with a 15-minute net before the BBL game his only hit against the white ball following the India Test series. He has played solely as an opener in T20, with his record generally improving the longer a tournament goes on. And with the likely chance to focus solely on the 20-over format in years to come, Smith believes his game could improve further.”I find the more I play back-to-back games you get in sync with the game,” Smith said. “Even [Saturday] I don’t think I played my first 10 balls really well. I was probably going a bit too hard for how the wicket was playing.”But if I am playing T20s regularly, I probably come out with a slightly different mindset at the start, give myself a bit more time. It’s just the gears and going up and down in the gears throughout the innings [that change for T20s]. And just playing the percentages.”
