Reds finish top of the Champions League
da fezbet: Despite failing to win for the first time in the Champions League this season, the Reds finished top of the league phase after collecting a very impressive 21 points in eight games.
Arne Slot’s side now advance straight to the round of 16, standing them in good stead to win Europe’s elite competition for the seventh time, and they will be pleased to avoid having to play an additional two games in the play-off round.
With the Premier League title-hopefuls still competing on all fronts, they can now turn their attention back to their pursuit of domestic glory, with everything also still to play for in the league and both cup competitions.
Liverpool make enquiry over "outrageous" £20m star who's wanted by Man Utd
The midfielder’s agents are keen to secure him a move to a new club.
ByDominic Lund Jan 29, 2025
Having already secured their place in the round of 16 prior to yesterday’s fixture, Slot handed minutes to some lesser-used players, with Tyler Morton coming on in the second half, appearing for the first time since the FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley.
Morton has struggled for game time this season, and The Mirror report the 22-year-old could still exit Anfield before the transfer window comes to an end, after recently admitting he has found it difficult not being in the team.
Slot is now set to make a decision on the midfielder’s future, most likely partially based on what he saw on Wednesday night, with a move elsewhere on the cards prior to the February 3rd deadline.

Another loan move could suit Morton
The Wallasey-born midfielder has spent a lot of time out on loan in the past, enjoying impressive spells with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, where he solidified his place as an important part of the team.
However, it was always going to be a difficult task for the central midfielder to force his way into starting contention at Liverpool, and there is unlikely to be an increase in game time on the horizon.
With the Reds performing at such a high level both domestically and in Europe, Slot is unlikely to want to make too many changes to his side, meaning the Englishman may not be handed many more opportunities.

Having expressed how difficult it is to not be regularly involved, another loan move until the end of the season could suit Morton, at which point his contract is set to expire, and the club can re-assess his future.
Considering the Liverpool academy graduate has been lauded as “incredible” in the past, it is clear he possesses a lot of potential, but he is not going to develop if he doesn’t receive consistent game time.
After disappointing displays in the ODIs, Sri Lanka finally found form in first T20I in Auckland

Sri Lanka’s top order hasn’t had the best time on tour so far, but in Auckland on Sunday, they finally clicked into gear. Pathum Nissanka may have fallen first-ball, but Kusal Mendis scored 25 in just nine balls, Dhananjaya de Silva 15 in 10, and then Charith Asalanka and Kusal Perera raced at nearly 10-an-over during a century-plus stand. It helped Sri Lanka tie the game and then score their first win of the tour in the Super Over. For Perera, playing his first competitive match for some 15 months, the intent shown by all those batters should be the blueprint going forward for success in the format.”It’s hard to play a T20 without momentum, and to win in T20 cricket you need a batter to provide that momentum,” Perera said after the game.Related

“I went ahead with a positive mindset, I wasn’t thinking about how long I had been out. Likewise, all the other batters also went out with a positive mindset, and that’s how we managed to capitalise on the conditions.”As for his own game, while he wasn’t completely at his destructive best, Perera was hopeful that with more consistent game time a more familar “match rhythm” would return.”Of course being out there in the middle and playing, I’m very happy with my performance. More than that I’m happy that the team won. That said I know there’s room for improvement and that will only come as I improve my match rhythm.”Charith Asalanka made a 41-ball 67•AFP/Getty Images
Now 32, Perera is one of the seniors in the squad, and his 45-ball 53 where he batted through the innings highlighted his evolving role in the side. Whereas once he was the player the side looked to for impetus, now he’s seemingly content to bat deep and allow the likes of Mendis and Asalanka to take on the bowling. In this game, Asalanka scored 67 off 41 in their 103-run partnership.”A lot of the batters showed good initiative, but batting with him [Asalanka] was easy as he took the strike and took on the bowling. That took the pressure off me, and what I tried to do from that point was turn over the strike and bat deep. When you have an innings like that [of Asalanka’s], more often than not you’re going to be nearing 200.”The action now moves to Dunedin and Queenstown thereafter, where the weather is expected to be much colder. Perera believes overseas tours such as these, in unfamiliar situations and conditions, will provide invaluable experience to younger members of the squad.”We know that the next venue is going to have different conditions, we just need to figure out how to be as competitive as we were today.”For me, experience means knowing how to handle certain situations. There are a lot of young players in the squad, and what I’ve told them is you have start learning now how to handle uncomfortable situations. Bowlers aren’t going to bowl how you like, they’re going to analyse you and be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. We need to be smart in those situations.”

Man City transfer news
da 888casino: Given how the last few weeks have gone for Pep Guardiola and City, January could be a busy month for the Premier League champions. The fact that goals are being conceded, and they are struggling to score enough at the other end of the pitch means the Blues could be looking to strengthen multiple positions in the squad.
It was reported on Wednesday that Man City are considering signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton in the New Year. The Blues are taking a “keen interest” in the England international, as he has rejected several contract offers from Everton. The new Everton owners, The Friedkin Group, hope their ambitions for the future will persuade Branthwaite to stay but have made no progress yet. Branthwaite has been a long-term target of Manchester United’s, but City are now also taking an interest in the talented defender.

January could also be a time that City add to their forward line, as they failed to replace Julian Alvarez in the summer. The Blues have heavily relied on Erling Haaland, and they are now interested in signing PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani on loan to ease the burden. City are showing genuine interest in a possible deal, and informal contacts have been made through intermediaries to get an understanding of the player’s current situation.
Man City plotting transfer swoop for £25m player
Kolo Muani is not the only striker that is on their radar, as according to TBR Football, Man City are interested in signing Manfred Ugalde from Spartak Moscow. The 22-year-old joined the Russian side in January of this year from FC Twente, and it is a transfer that has seen his career come alive.
The Costa Rica international has 15 goals in 18 Premier Liga games this season, which is the most he has scored in a single game in his career. Spartak Moscow is Ugalde’s fourth club of his career, as he’s also played for FC Twente, Saprissa, and Lommel SK. It is the latter where the City Group already know Ugalde, as they are the ones that brought him to Europe and Lommel SK.
The report states that his form in Russia has brought him to the attention of Man City, as well as Arsenal and Chelsea. City have already been made aware by Ugalde’s representatives that he is available for £25 million, as that is what his release clause is worth.

The Blues are said to like the young striker a lot and are keeping a close eye on him ahead of the January transfer window opening. But as well as the three teams being mentioned as interested sides, there are also teams such as Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham, and Newcastle United, as well as teams across Europe.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Gunners were in pole position for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams for a potential January move, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit.
According to reports from Spain, Arsenal are determined to strengthen their attack this winter, meaning they have now set their sights on Williams, who is valued at around £50m by his current employers.
There will be competition for the Spaniard’s signature, with Barcelona also in the frame, but there is a feeling that Arteta’s side could hold an advantage over the La Liga club.

The Gunners have an advantage over Barca in terms of money, and they can offer the 22-year-old the opportunity to be a part of an exciting project in the Premier League, which could be a decisive factor in his decision.
Exciting news for Arsenal
With Saka out injured, there could be no better player to come in on the right flank than Williams, considering just how impressive he has been for Athletic Club over the course of the past few seasons.
The Spain international chalked up a remarkable 14 assists in the previous campaign, and his versatility could also make him an attractive option for Arteta, given that he is clearly able to play on both wings, having done so regularly in La Liga.

The BBC’s John Bennett was also full of praise for the attacker for his performances in Euro 2024, saying:
As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal could be well-placed to beat Barcelona to Williams’ signature this month.
Sam Curran, Will Jacks also in the runs as Surrey post mammoth 236 for 2

Laurie Evans celebrates his century•Getty Images
A record-breaking batting performance from Laurie Evans and his Surrey teammates set up a 65-run victory against Glamorgan in their Vitality Blast match in Cardiff.Evans made the highest score against Glamorgan and the highest score on this ground as Surrey also set a record total at Sophia Gardens. With Sam Curran and Will Jacks both making runs, Surrey set Glamorgan a target of 237 to win. This was a hard enough task but with big hitting all-rounder Dan Douthwaite unable to bat, having only managing to bowl 10 balls before he left the field, it became even harder.Glamorgan eventually reached 171 for 8 as Surrey closed out a comfortable win with Sam Northeast’s 76 the only significant score from the home side.Surrey won the toss and elected to bat and were electrifying from the start of their innings. Jacks gave Evans great support in an opening stand that brought 115 runs from just 64 balls. Jacks was dismissed when he was trapped lbw by Glamorgan’s Australian leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou for 46 from 29 balls. While Evans had been the aggressor in his stand with Jacks it was Curran who took on the role when he walked into bat at three. In innings that was full of outrageous shots, seven of which were smoked over the boundary for six, it was the three balls Curran hit over the rope in Prem Sisodiya’s final over that will live longest in the memory. The last of these was a shot where Curran danced down the pitch a long way from where the ball pitched and still managed to straight drive it for six.It was in that same Sisodiya over that Glamorgan nearly had some respite from the partnership between Curran and Evans, but Kiran Carlson, playing with a dislocated finger he sustained in Sunday’s match against Sussex, put down a catch at long on when Evans was on 94.Evans made the most of his chance to score his third hundred in T20 cricket and his first for Surrey. His career best 118 not out came from 60 balls and contained 12 fours and six sixes.Curran departed in the final over, caught by Colin Ingram at long on going for another six, as Surrey posted 236 for 2, the highest total made on this ground, going past the 216 for 5 that Glamorgan made against Hampshire in 2019.Glamorgan were left with a near insurmountable task of going at nearly 12 runs an over from the very start of their innings and they were two wickets down inside the powerplay with Carlson and Callum Taylor both falling inside the first six overs.Glamorgan came into this match with four wins from five matches and most of that success has been down to the form of Ingram and Chris Cooke. There was a rare failure for both of them with Ingram dismissed for 11 by Sunil Narine and Cooke clean bowled by Gus Atkinson for 12.With Cooke and Ingram gone it was left to Northeast to try and bring some respectability to the Glamorgan total and his half-century the only bright spot on a tough day for his side.
