Rangers let star leave for £0, now he’s worth £4m & miles better than Cerny

da wazamba: Philippe Clement is a man under pressure in the Glasgow Rangers hotseat. Across 14 competitive matches this season, the Light Blues have won only eight times, hardly the form of a team fighting for trophies on all fronts.

da leao: Against Kilmarnock recently, the starting XI looked afraid to push into the opponent’s final third, with Killie registering a higher xG stat from open play than the Gers during the contest, a damning indictment of how poor the team has become under Clement of late.

During the transfer window, the Belgian knew he had to get things spot on, otherwise, it would likely be another one-horse race in the Premiership. While several signings have settled in well and shown that they might be a key part of the future, the majority have struggled.

    Rangers' summer 2024 transfer business

The main priority for Clement after the 2023/24 season ended was bringing the wage bill down significantly. The likes of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack all departed when their contracts expired, saving the club around £77k-per-week in the process.

    Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Combine this with the fact the club also moved on Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers, who earned £55k-per-week between them, and it was evident the wage bill had been reduced effectively, freeing up funds for Clement to bring in his own players.

Establishing a player trading model appeared to be his main focus, signing Connor Barron, Clinton Nsiala, Jefte, Oscar Cortes and Hamza Igamane, who were all aged 22 or under upon arriving at Ibrox.

Jefte and Barron have featured 14 and 11 times respectively for the first team this season, while the jury is still out on Cortes and Igamane. Time will be given to those who don’t have much experience, but can the same be said for those who have arrived with plenty to prove?

Robin Propper was expected to be the heir apparent to Goldson, but he hasn’t exactly hit the ground running so far. Nedim Bajrami has shown plenty of promise, although he has been forced to play on the left wing rather than through the middle due to injury issues.

Vaclav Cerny was a signing who, on the surface, looked like having all the hallmarks of being an excellent one. A winger who is entering his prime years and scored four times in the Bundesliga last season.

The reality, however, has been very different.

    Vaclav Cerny’s season in numbers

Registering three goals and two assists in 13 games since joining the Ibrox side hints at a positive start, but more often than not, the Czech gem has played poorly.

His struggles have been apparent in Europe especially. In the first two Europa League fixtures, Cerny has missed two big chances, succeeded with just 0.5 dribbles per game and created zero big chances. These are the matches where Clement expects big things from the former Ajax gem.

His two-goal salvo against St Johnstone before the international break skews things slightly with regard to his domestic statistics, but it is clear the winger needs to improve massively.

Over the previous few years, the Gers have struggled to find effective widemen capable of contributing goals and assists, while also creating plenty of chances.

They released someone in 2012 who is now starring across the pond and would make a big difference to the current first team – Lewis Morgan.

The Rangers star who left for nothing

The current New York Red Bulls star joined the Rangers academy back in 2004 when he was aged just eight, going on to spend the next eight years at Auchenhowie before being released in 2012.

Not to be deterred by his release from the Ibrox side, Morgan soon joined St Mirren and went on to make 118 appearances for the Buddies over the next six years, scoring 29 goals while registering 23 assists for the club.

It didn’t take long for his form to get noticed, as Celtic lured him back to Glasgow in 2018, but his spell at Parkhead was hardly wonderful, scoring only twice in 31 games for the club.

A move to the MLS in 2020 has proven to be the catalyst for him to kickstart his career, first shining for Inter Miami before joining New York Red Bulls in 2021.

    Lewis Morgan’s season statistics

Hailed as “dynamic” by his former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, the Scot has exuded this quality for his club side during the 2024 MLS campaign.

Across 31 matches in all competitions, Morgan has registered 20 goal contributions – 13 goals and seven assists – while also creating 13 big chances, averaging 1.7 key passes per game and succeeding with one dribble each match.

Compare this to Cerny, who has scored only eight goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, chipping in with just three assists, suggesting Morgan would have been a far more effective threat out wide than the Czech winger.

When compared to his positional peers, Morgan ranks in the top 5% for shot-creating actions, progressive carries and progressive passes over the previous 365 days. Cerny, in comparison, doesn’t even rank in the top 50% for these metrics when compared to players in similar leagues over the same timeframe.

This is yet more evidence of how much better Morgan is at the moment over the current Rangers loanee.

Still ‘only’ 28, Morgan’s market value could continue to rise following his excellent showings this season. Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, the forward is currently valued at €5m (£4m).

Of course, the Light Blues didn’t know back in 2012 how good a player Morgan was going to be, releasing him due to his physical stature. After years of developing in Scotland, he took the plunge and moved to America.

    Lewis Morgan

This has not only revitalised his career, but also seen the player establish himself as a more permanent fixture in the Scottish national team setup, playing five times under Steve Clarke.

If Clement was able to call on him rather than Cerny, then perhaps the Gers might have scored a few more goals. For that there is no doubt.

Joe Root scores century going toe-to-toe with James Anderson

Former England Test captain posts 147 with Yorkshire still trailing Lancashire by 210 runs

    Paul Edwards14-May-2022

Should it be announced that by some miracle Len Hutton ‘in his prime’ would be playing at Headingley tomorrow, one imagines Yorkshire’s ground would not be anything like big enough to accommodate the spectators wanting to watch him bat. If it was further disclosed that Hutton would be facing the bowling of Brian Statham, the crowds from Sheffield, Bradford and elsewhere in the kingdom would have to compete with even more folk coming across the M62. So what might we make of the fact that in today’s common sunshine we saw Joe Root make 147 against a Lancashire attack that included James Anderson? This afternoon, such a sight was familiar; we may see it again tomorrow as Yorkshire look to avoid defeat. But in three summers’ time…?Let us be cautious. Hutton and Statham epitomised their county’s best qualities and combined to wonderful effect on a famous Ashes tour. On top of which, there was an essential integrity about the two men that ennobles their posthumous reputations. Not for nothing was Malcolm Lorimer’s collection of tributes to Statham entitled . Root, though, is only 31 and may have five years of first-class cricket ahead of him. And while Anderson will be 40 in July, it seems clear he will play on as long as he retains both his fitness and his private fire. We cannot yet definitively assess the career of either of our current champions. And now let us not be cautious at all. Much of what we said about Hutton and Statham applies to Root and Anderson. Most critics would agree that over the past five years the pair have been their country’s best cricketers (although Ben Stokes would also be in that frame.) They are fit to be ranked with their predecessors and the only truly surprising aspect about Root’s century today was that it followed his six other first-class innings against Lancashire, in which he had managed a total of 58 runs with a best of 22.Everything else was fond and familiar. There was the unobtrusive accumulation of runs as though he did not want the bowlers to cotton on they were being milked. He got off the mark with a single squeezed backward of square on the leg side off Anderson. He leg-glanced his England colleague for his first four and later cover-drove him twice to the Long Room boundary.Related

Vastly more frequent were the Bank of England defensive strokes, the controlled hooks, the wristy cut past gully or the tuck to either side of square leg. There were two edges through the slips but neither went to hand. Root’s scoring rate appeared the work of a conjurer: his fifty came off 73 balls and his century off 150.He vastly outscored Harry Duke, whose 40 runs came off 202 balls and with whom Root put on 154 before the Yorkshire keeper was bowled when trying to ramp a ball from Matt Parkinson. That was a sad end to Duke’s innings and utterly at variance with nearly four hours of self-denial. He had played not so much second fiddle as fourth triangle to Root but his efforts were plainly vital to Yorkshire’s huge effort to draw this match. And those endeavours must continue tomorrow. Root’s dismissal, caught at slip by Luke Wells when trying to work Parkinson to leg six overs before the close, has left Yorkshire 60 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.By comparison with his former England captain, Anderson sometimes looked a little out of sorts. He roughed up George Hill with short balls early in the morning session and dismissed him when Hill dishclothed a pull to Dane Vilas at midwicket. Otherwise, the man often seen as the finest new-ball bowler in England’s history frequently seemed discontented, either with a streaky shot or with the slow pitch or with life itself. And of course, he has something of an issue with Root at present. The ex-England skipper was at least complicit in the decision to leave Anderson and Stuart Broad out of the party for the recent tour to the West Indies, which perhaps explains why the Lancashire bowler was unwilling to engage in much chat with his friend. Then a reluctant smile would play about that world-weary face. After all, this was only Rooty and, my God, had they played some cricket together?Lancashire’s other bowlers looked rather bland on this Headingley pitch. But Tom Bailey’s accuracy earned him two more wickets today and Parkinson’s undimmed willingness to wheel away on an unresponsive surface was ultimately rewarded with the wickets of Duke and Root. And the leg-spinner’s removal of Harry Brook may have had an even greater effect on this game. For it is difficult to imagine that cricket can be made to seem much simpler than Brook contrived to do during his 48-minute innings this morning. George Balderson, a fine young player and a useful fourth seamer, was humbled to impotence by five boundaries in two overs. But perhaps it all became too easy; perhaps Brook needed a reminder that it was earth beneath his feet. Instead, he looked to work a fine leggie from Parkinson through midwicket but did not get to the pitch of the hard-spun ball. It turned past his bat and hit the middle stump. Brook was thus dismissed for 41, his first score below fifty in seven first-class innings this season. He currently averages 135 but such statistics sometimes play us false; not in Brook’s case, however. The neutrals who have watched him bat are certain that no cricketer in England is in better form.

Matthews-Mohammed magic stuns England as West Indies leave it late before coming up trumps again

Setback for the defending champions as they slump to their second straight loss

After their takedown of hosts New Zealand on the opening night, West Indies beat England for the first time at a Women’s World Cup to throw the qualification race wide open. A second straight win, this one almost as late in the script as the previous one, took them to the top of the standings, even as the defending champions suffered their second straight loss.Stafanie Taylor’s side defended 225 on a slow pitch in a see-saw match. For a while, it seemed to have settled with England as their ninth-wicket pair of Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross added 61 to take them within nine runs of victory. Then some magic, along with a bit of luck, for Anisa Mohammed turned the game again as West Indies pulled off a sensational win.Tasked with bowling the 48th over, Mohammed was at the receiving end of a ferocious Ecclestone hit. But she stuck out a hand and deflected the ball on to the stumps to run Cross out at the non-striker’s end. Three balls later, Mohammed bowled Anya Shrubsole, who yorked herself as she charged down the track and missed a full ball, to seal the deal.It was heartbreaking for England after Ecclestone and Cross had brought them back from 156 for 8, through a mix of street-smart cricket and calculated aggression. The game was set up, however, by West Indies openers Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin, who added 81. Then they lost four wickets for 17 runs to concede the advantage. And then came the bailout courtesy a 123-run fifth-wicket stand between Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation, which took them to 225, which at the halfway point seemed a decent total on a slow pitch.Anisa Mohammed leads the West Indies victory sprint after her sensational last over•Getty Images

It looked even bigger than it was when England were reduced to 94 for 5, before Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley put on 60 for the sixth wicket to keep England in the hunt. But they fell away again by losing three wickets in six balls before Ecclestone and Cross took them close, only to fall short again. Both teams will be disappointed with their efforts on the field. England dropped four chances, and West Indies three. England sent down 23 wides, West Indies 15. Yet, the clincher that started England’s troubles was Dottin’s leaping one-handed stunner at backward point that broke England’s steady opening stand. She was fully airborne as she leapt to her left and put out her non-dominant hand to dismiss Lauren Winfield-Hill. It came on the back of two dropped catches.Three overs later, Heather Knight was out caught behind as she advanced down the pitch to a Matthews delivery that drifted away and held its line. The decision was initially referred for a stumping, but UltraEdge confirmed a thin spike and Knight was given out. Matthews had a second when Nat Sciver top-edged a slog sweep to mid-on. England had slipped to 58 for 3 at that stage. When Amy Jones offered a return catch that was shelled by Aaliyah Alleyne, England had a brief reprieve, but Alleyne had the last laugh when she had Jones driving to Matthews at slip. Tammy Beaumont looked good, but fell to Mohammed when she played all around a full ball. A wobble had turned into a full-blown collapse.Dunkley and Wyatt repaired the innings by ticking the runs sensibly. The pair put on 60 and appeared to have eased the nerves in the England camp when Dunkley mistimed a swat straight to Taylor at short midwicket in the 34th over. Two balls later, Wyatt sliced a lofted hit to mid-off. When Katherine Brunt slapped Shamilia Connell to point, it looked like the writing was on the wall at 156 for 8.Sophie Ecclestone was impressive, and her three-wicket burst gave England a good chance•Getty Images

Earlier, Dottin and Matthews started briskly, scoring at close to six runs an over. It changed after the 11th over. Cross could have had Matthews but for a return catch that went down. She did, however, apply the squeeze with Sciver before Ecclestone forced a slowdown through eight boundary-less overs that led to a collapse.Matthews was the first to go on 45 when she top-edged a heave to short third to break an 81-run opening stand in the 21st over. Three balls later, Dottin was run-out after a mix-up with Kycia Knight, as Wyatt swooped in to under-arm a direct hit at the striker’s end. One ball later, Taylor met a slow Ecclestone delivery with an open-faced bat to defend but got the outside edge and was caught behind for a first-ball duck.West Indies could have lost a fourth shortly after but Campbelle’s lbw decision was overturned by DRS when the impact – she had attempted a sweep off Knight – was found to be outside off. But England only had to wait until the next delivery to get a wicket as Knight drilled Ecclestone straight to short cover.West Indies were 98 for 4 after 27 overs. Only 37 runs came in the next ten overs, with just one boundary, as England continued to apply pressure, but Campbelle and Nation absorbed it. They saw off Ecclestone, who bounced back from none for 77 against Australia to finish with 3 for 20 today, and brought up their 50-run stand in the 40th over.As the innings approached its end, the pair became more aggression. Nation broke a 13-over drought when she drove Sciver square of the wicket for a boundary in the 45th. Then Campbelle swivel-pulled Sciver behind square and flicked her to midwicket to raise a 70-ball half-century. Soon, they also raised the century stand. This proved to be the difference in the end as it gave West Indies a total they managed to defend after a struggle.

Tottenham star could now ditch Ange for elite club as Levy demands £150m

Championship side Coventry City seriously threatened to end the prospect of an EFL Cup run right at the very start of the competition, with Brandon Thomas-Asante firing the home side in front just past the hour mark.

It was an uninspiring display from Postecoglou’s side, who were rescued by two last-gasp strikes from substitutes Djed Spence and winger Brennan Johnson. Spence nearly joined Genoa in the summer, but the previously out-of-favour right back helped to spare Postecoglou’s blushes alongside Johnson, who was also subject to online abuse in the build-up to this encounter.

Despite their underwhelming start to the 2024/2025 campaign, Postecoglou has told his Spurs squad to keep calm and maintain their performance level in a behind-the-scenes message.

Following the clash at Coventry, Postecoglou actually defended his Tottenham players in a post-match press conference, insisting that the team showed spirit and character against a tough Sky Blues side.

“Yeah, I don’t know, flat performance is a bit harsh. I thought I was a typical cup game,” said Postecoglou after Spurs’ 2-1 win at Coventry.

“I thought Coventry were really good. They put some real energy into the game, and we couldn’t really get a grip on it. So we had to hang in there. We had to work really, really hard just to stay in the game and obviously going a goal behind makes it even more challenging. But like you said at the end there we showed some real spirit and character, which is probably what’s been missing in the first four games.

Postecoglou has also been adamant that he always wins silverware in his second season, and supporters will be hoping that is indeed the case, otherwise, some of their most crucial players could be tempted by opportunities elsewhere.

Star defender Cristian Romero may be one of them, as the Argentine World Cup winner continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Cristian Romero refuses to rule out Real Madrid move

As per Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Romero is refusing to rule out a move to Real Madrid behind the scenes, as he is “desperate” to compete at the highest level possible and win trophies.

The Galacticos are targeting a blockbuster centre-back signing, and while Spurs are keen to tie Romero down with a new contract, it is believed a future move to the Bernabeu is still a real possibility, with the player opening the door to a potential exit.

The 26-year-old, who’s impressed since joining Tottenham for around £42 million from Atalanta in the summer of 2021, won’t be leaving on the cheap. Club insider Paul O’Keefe, speaking to The Last Word On Spurs earlier this year, said that Levy is ready to demand £150 million for Romero.

It is unclear whether Real president Florentino Perez would be willing to reach that figure, but the north Londoners are ready to dig their heels in.

'A force of nature' – How county cricket remembers Andrew Symonds and that T20 knock

Australian had a huge impact on the game in England, and the teams he played with there

As Kent and Surrey players lined up on the boundary in front of the Beckenham pavilion to observe a minute’s silence to honour Andrew Symonds, they represented two clubs which had been touched by his “magic” more than most.It was on this suburban out-ground in South London that Matt Walker, the Kent head coach, can remember Symonds whacking a Hampshire attack featuring the likes of Wasim Akram and Alan Mullally into the adjoining training facilities of the Crystal Palace football club. Indeed his unbeaten 96 off 37 balls against Hampshire in the first season of the Twenty20 Cup in 2003 remains a pivotal innings in Symonds’ career.Another innings Walker shared with Symonds was arguably more of a trailblazing one, even if the true significance of it was somewhat lost at the time in an air of puzzlement about the feat and the format itself, which was still very much in its infancy. A good distance from Beckenham, deep into Kent at Maidstone, was where Symonds struck his world-record 34-ball hundred in 37 minutes against Middlesex the following season. It was the fastest T20 hundred until Chris Gayle reached the mark off 30 balls in 2013. Symonds went on to reach 112 off 43 deliveries as Kent won the rain-affected match by seven wickets with 29 balls to spare.”It was almost surreal, because it was so early on in T20,” Walker says. “No one really then knew how to play the game. It sounds really strange but those first couple of years it was so far removed from anything we’d done as cricketers. This new form of cricket came in which I think everyone was scratching their heads about how they go, some people would try the slog first, it didn’t really work out, and the game sort of passed us by and no one really quite got it. But he got it.”Surrey and Kent players observe a minute’s silence for Andrew Symonds•Kent CCC

Symonds clubbed 18 fours and three sixes in that knock, Walker came in a No. 4 with his powerfully built team-mate all guns blazing and ended unbeaten on 12.”Looking back I can’t remember a shot he played because it was so long ago, but what I do remember is there was such shellshock around the ground, especially from the Middlesex players, they couldn’t quite believe what was going on,” he says. “It was almost a sense of this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before.”Now it happens quite a bit, doesn’t it? We see it most weeks in the IPL or in our Blast and it’s quite commonplace, but bearing in mind when that was, I don’t think anyone could quite believe what they’re seeing.”It just felt like he was playing in the back garden with his kids, how easy it was, with how much power he gained, how hard he hit the ball. We just were left a bit sort of bewildered by it really. But Symo being Symo sort of walked off, bat under his arm and, ‘whatever, no big deal’.”It was Symonds’ ability to combine a larger-than-life physical presence with a down-to-earth, humble, honest persona which swept people along with him – made them feel special – that Walker remembers most from the Australian’s time with Kent from 1999 to 2004.”He was a force of nature and an incredibly talented athlete that probably could have played any sport he wanted to if he chose, and he was magic, he really was absolutely magic,” Walker says. “It was the presence he had everywhere he went… you felt unbeatable with that sort of bloke in your presence.”He made it a great place to be for those years and that period was one of the happiest I think I’ve been playing cricket, with that group of players and him in it.”Andrew Symonds on his way to 112 for Kent against Middlesex•Getty Images

During his time with the county, Symonds made 49 first-class appearances, scoring 12 centuries and amassing 3,526 runs at an average of 45.20. He also contributed 65 red-ball wickets with his right-arm seam and off-spin.Symonds also made 62 List A appearances for Kent and scored 1,690 one-day runs at an average of 30.17. His highest one-day total of 146 came against Lancashire at Tunbridge Wells in 2004 and he took 69 wickets at 21.53, including two five-wicket hauls. In 2020, he was voted Kent Spitfires’ Greatest Overseas Player by the club’s members and supporters.Speaking about Symonds’ death, just hours after the news broke late on Saturday night UK time, Walker is almost overcome with emotion initially before the memories flow and he returns to his usually verbose self.”He’ll be hugely missed,” he says. “I know that for a fact. And I can say that when he was with us at Kent, it was an amazing period of time of cricket. We won a lot of games. We were one of the best sides in the country. We won a couple of things and he was a massive part of that and my thoughts are so much with the family and especially the Australian group of players that have had such a horrible time of it.”Related

Symonds’ death in a single-car crash in north Queensland at the age of 46 follows the deaths of Shane Warne and Rod Marsh in March. Their loss has been felt around the sporting world, and other corners of English county cricket who were moved deeply by Australian cricket’s latest loss, including Surrey, whose players stood shoulder to shoulder with Kent’s under Sunday’s leaden skies which ultimately contrived to end their Championship contest in a washed-out draw.Symonds joined Surrey for the Friends Provident T20 campaign of 2010 and Gareth Batty, then Symonds’ team-mate now Surrey’s head coach, vividly remembers the Australian’s classy response to a then 19-year-old Jason Roy scoring his maiden T20 hundred to propel their side to victory against Kent at Beckenham that season.”Andy Symonds is someone that we knew personally, we had him for a period of time at Surrey nearer the end of his career and he was very big around the group,” Batty says. “I remember Jason getting his first hundred in a T20 game and he was the one, fresh into the group, that said, ‘hang on a minute, we’ve got a young fella here, we hang around for 20 minutes and we bask in his glory with him.'”I certainly think Jason will remember that to this day. I certainly remember it and I still try and aspire to be as good a team man as he certainly was throughout his life. He’ll be sadly missed.”Symonds also played stints with Gloucestershire, where he scored 254 not out against Glamorgan in 1995, including a then first-class record of 16 sixes, and at Lancashire in 2005.”He was a brilliant, three-dimensional player but he was also very driven and asked a lot of his team-mates,” Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket.”We caught him at a time in his career when he was flying and he seemed to affect every game in which he played. He was a cricketer who imposed himself on the opposition in a competitive way but without crossing the line. You felt his presence and he had a massive impact on what we were trying to create.”

Sky Sports: Liverpool "monitoring" 25 y/o star who’s been on fire in 24/25

da realbet: Liverpool are believed to be “monitoring” a 25-year-old who is enjoying a superb start to the season, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

    Liverpool transfer rumours

da bet nacional: The Reds continue to be linked with new signings, with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni reportedly wanted, being seen as a similar option to Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi, of whom a summer move failed to materialise.

Further up the pitch, Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has been backed to seal a move to Liverpool, too, with a potential cut-price £50m transfer on the cards. He has a £68m release clause that can be triggered in 2025, but the Eagles may accept a lower offer, as they still look to receive big money for the England international.

The Reds are also said to be scouting Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi, as the club possibly look to eye replacements for Mohamed Salah, should the Egyptian superstar fail to sign a new deal before next summer.

When it comes to possible outgoings at Liverpool, Darwin Nunez’s lack of minutes has seen him linked with a switch away, with Barcelona rumoured to be eyeing a switch for him.

According to Plettenberg on X, Liverpool are eyeing Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, with his current club desperate to keep hold of him:

Marmoush stands out as such an eye-catching option for Liverpool, not least because of the sensational start to the season that he has made for Frankfurt. He has averaged a goal every 72 minutes for his club side across all competitions, finding the net nine times in a total of 656 minutes, most of which have come in the Bundesliga.

The 25-year-old has been likened to Salah in the past, perhaps also in part due to him also being Egyptian, and former goalkeeper Ahmed Shobair has waxed lyrical over him, saying:

“What he’s done in the German league since last season deserves even more praise and attention. Marmoush proves every day that he’s a distinguished talent and wonderful player. There’s little doubt that a transfer to one of Europe’s biggest clubs is very close.”

Ideally, Marmoush won’t necessarily be needed because Salah will stay put, but if he does move on, or Liverpool feel like that they could do with him coming as well to steadily usurp him over time, he could be a shrewd addition to Arne Slot’s squad.
