IPL 2025 to resume on May 17, final to be played on June 3

The rest of the tournament will be played at six venues

ESPNcricinfo staff12-May-20254:40

What happened to home advantage in IPL 2025?

IPL 2025 will resume on May 17 and end on June 3, as per the revised schedule announced by the BCCI on Monday night. The remainder of the tournament, which was suspended on May 9 for a week due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, will be played at six venues: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The venues for the playoffs will be announced later, but the matches will be played on the following dates: Qualifier 1 on May 29, the Eliminator on May 30, Qualifier 2 on June 1 and the final on June 3. A total of 17 matches will be played after the resumption, with two double-headers, both of which will be played on Sundays. The revised schedule features 13 league games and the four playoff matches. This means that the Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) game, which was called off midway through the first innings on May 8 in Dharamsala, will be played again, on May 24 in Jaipur, which will be the temporary home base for PBKS.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Two days later, PBKS will play against Mumbai Indians (MI), a match they were originally meant to play in their second home base of Dharamsala on May 11. The match that will restart the tournament on May 17 will be played between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru. On the first of the two double-header days, Rajasthan Royals (RR) will meet PBKS in the day game (3.30pm IST) on May 18 and DC will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the evening (7.30pm IST). The next Sunday – May 25 – will see GT take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the day game in Ahmedabad and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) meet KKR in Delhi at 7.30pm IST. The last league game will be between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and RCB on May 27 in Lucknow. The change in venues also means that three teams – PBKS, CSK and SRH – won’t get to play on their original home grounds anymore. With CSK and SRH out of the playoffs race, PBKS will count themselves unlucky to be playing two of their home matches at a neutral venue. With 15 points from 11 matches, PBKS were third on the points table before the tournament was suspended. The official release said the BCCI held “extensive consultations with government and security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders” before finalising the resumption of the tournament. The delayed finish of the IPL, which was originally scheduled to end on May 25 in Kolkata, means it will now coincide with the entire ODI series between England and West Indies starting on May 29 in Birmingham and ending on June 3 at The Oval. It will lead to a clash for Romario Shepherd (RCB), Shamar Joseph (LSG) and Sherfane Rutherford (GT), who have all been picked in the West Indies ODI squad. England have not named their squad yet but the players likely to be affected are Jos Buttler (GT), Phil Salt (RCB), Jacob Bethell (RCB), Liam Livingstone (RCB), Will Jacks (MI) and Reece Topley (MI), depending on which teams make the playoffs.6:21

Has Pant been LSG’s biggest letdown?

The revised IPL schedule also squeezes the gap between the IPL final and the WTC final to just seven days, with Australia and South Africa set to contest the Test world title from June 11 at Lord’s. Both Australia and South Africa are scheduled to announce their squads on Tuesday. The players who are currently part of the IPL teams and are likely to be picked for the WTC final are Australia captain Pat Cummins and Travis Head (both SRH), Mitchell Starc and Tristan Stubbs (both DC), Josh Hazlewood (RCB), Marco Jansen and Josh Inglis (both PBKS), Aiden Markram (LSG), Kagiso Rabada (GT), Ryan Rickelton (MI) and Kwena Mphaka (RR).The revised schedule will also potentially impact the India A tour of England, which is scheduled to begin from May 30, for two unofficial Tests in Canterbury and Northampton. Several fringe India players, some of whom are likely to be part of the India squad for the five-Test series starting on June 20 in England, will now be part of the IPL when the A matches begin. For now, the biggest challenge for the 10 IPL franchises will be to re-assemble their squads and bring back overseas players and support-staff members who had begun flying back home over the weekend. The team that could find it easiest to get back together will be GT, currently on top of the table, who had seen only two of their overseas players fly back: Buttler and Gerald Coetzee. The rest of their squad was continuing to train in Ahmedabad. MI could also benefit from the revised schedule, as their first game is on May 21, four days after the tournament resumes.

Sangha, McInerney build healthy lead for Shield leaders South Australia

After 20 wickets fell on the opening day, the game took on a more sedate pace at Adelaide Oval

AAP19-Feb-2025Jason Sangha and Conor McInerney struck half-centuries to give the Sheffield Shield leaders the upper hand over Tasmania in their fast-moving fixture.SA were 272 for 6 in their second innings at stumps on day two at Adelaide Oval, 264 runs ahead of Tasmania. The hosts made just 93 in their first dig, with the visitors replying with 101.But after 20 wickets fell on day one, four SA batters took control on Wednesday, with Sangha (75), McInerney (64), Harry Nielsen (49) and Liam Scott (43 retired hurt) all flourishing.Sangha and McInerney combined for a match-high partnership for the third wicket. The duo put on 100 runs after the early losses of opener Henry Hunt and skipper Nathan McSweeney.Tasmania seamer Gabe Bell dismissed both Hunt, who got a leading edge attempting to hit the through the legside and was caught and bowled, and McSweeney, trapped lbw for the second time in the match.McInerney and Hunt took SA’s total to 138 before the former was bowled by a superb delivery from Riley Meredith. The right-armer was bowling around the wicket and got a delivery to move away from the left-handed batter and clip off stump.New Test allrounder Beau Webster adopted a similar tactic, bowling around the wicket with his medium pacers, and removed Jake Lehmann caught at first slip by Jordan Silk.Sangha was removed a dozen overs later, leaving SA 181 for 5 and the game in the balance. But allrounder Scott and wicketkeeper-batter Nielsen then turned the tide in favour of the home side with a brisk 89-run partnership.Nielsen cracked eight boundaries in his 81-ball knock, and Scott struck six fours before retiring hurt about 10 minutes before stumps because of a suspected migraine. Nielsen was trapped lbw by Meredith in the next over, giving the quick his second wicket.

Vettori: 'Whatever ground we go to, our batting is going to be aggressive'

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will maintain their ultra-aggressive batting approach from last season, head coach Daniel Vettori has said ahead of their IPL 2025 opener against Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad.”Whatever ground we go to, we have an understanding that the batting team is going to be aggressive,” Vettori said. “The only thing that can mitigate that is the pitch, but most times, the pitches in IPL are very flat.”When you come to these grounds, you know exactly what to expect. You know how the batsmen are going come against you. It’s quite…..maybe not fun is the right word, it’s a good challenge for a bowling group to try and work their way through that.”That’s what Pat [Cummins, the captain] addressed the bowling group the other day. He said the expectation is on the batters to do all the work, score the runs and the bowlers can sort of feed into that. If we get those days to make it all work, it’s going go a long way in us winning games. The onus on batting group to score runs and for the bowlers to be able to mitigate that.”Vettori expressed excitement about the expectations surrounding the team and hoped they could replicate the intensity that took them to last year’s final.”Expectations bring some excitement,” he said. “Expectations are built around the performances of last year and the quality of the team we’ve been able to put together at the back end of last season and into the auction.”As a franchise, we’re really excited about the season because we have that foundation from the five players [Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Reddy, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma] we retained and how well they performed last year, hopefully we have the squad to perform as well this year if not better.”Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who claimed the second-highest run tally for an opening pair last year, will continue at the top for SRH. Vettori also welcomed Ishan Kishan into the side, calling him a “huge addition”.”Don’t think we’ll be changing the opening combination, Ishan complements them as well as anyone,” Vettori said. “He has a similar stye of game, left-handed, the ability to take on all types of bowlers. We’re very lucky to have him part of the squad to complement those two, then have Nitish and Klaasen and few of our younger batters to be able to come into the squad as well. We look at that as a huge addition to the team.”Vettori was pleased to see a fit-again Cummins and Nitish, with Cummins recovering from an ankle issue that forced him to miss the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, Nitish, one of their breakout stars from IPL 2024, comes back following a rehab from a side strain that kept him out of action for a month.”They’ve come through their training sessions really well,” Vettori said. “They had injuries around January, it’s been an extended period since they played but they’ve also had time to recover. When they play as much cricket as they do, it’s sometimes nice to be able to get the chance to refresh.”Both of them are eager and excited about the season. That’s a great position to have. Sometimes when you come into the IPL, it’s the end of a very long season, players can be slightly jaded, but those two are very keen to go.”Cummins will lead a strong pace battery that has two other prolific performers in Mohammed Shami and Harshal Patel – bowlers who won the purple cap in IPL 2023 and 2024 respectively.”Shami two years ago was purple cap winner, Harshal [won it] last year – they are two big additions,” he said. “We know it is big shoes to fill from Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] and Nattu [T Natarajan] – stalwarts of the Sunrisers, who mean much to the franchise.”It was hard to see them go, but that’s the dynamic of the auction. You have to be as nimble as possible to take opportunities. To see Shami come to us, bowl so well in the Champions Trophy is fantastic, those two can complement what Pat brings to the table.”

All-time great still going strong at 39Into final year of contract with Al-NassrHas set himself 1,000-goal targetGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

At 39 years of age, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is offering no suggestion that the most distinguished of boots will be hung up any time soon. He remains part of the Portugal international set-up, with 214 caps to his name, and is expected to play on towards the 2026 World Cup.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

At club level, Ronaldo found the target on 50 occasions for Al-Nassr last season and has already been back among the goals in the current campaign. His contract in the Middle East is, however, due to expire at the end of the season and no extension has been agreed as yet.

GettyWHAT LAWRENSON SAID

Former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson believes somebody should be advising the all-time great to call it a day before becoming a fading force, with the ex-Republic of Ireland international telling : “Cristiano Ronaldo is still scoring in Saudi Arabia, but would he sign a new contract there? I’m not sure. This is when I think he needs a best mate who says, ‘you’ve had an unbelievable run, and maybe at the end of this season, just hang your boots up and let people remember you for what you’ve done’. He doesn’t want to go through half a season where he scores something like six goals in the Saudi league.”

There is no sign of Ronaldo slowing down, or his relentless ambition easing off. Until the day comes that he loses that drive to be the best, he should be expected to continue – with the evergreen frontman already stating his desire to reach 1,000 career goals after recently passing the 900 mark.

Arteta delivers coy injury update on "outstanding" star alongside Saka

Ahead of one of the biggest games of the Premier League season, Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the injuries of three key Arsenal stars, with the Spaniard left desperately hoping for their return ahead of their title decider against Manchester City.

Arsenal injury news

The March international break has few fans, with clubs left hoping for their players to come back injury-free in the middle of the most important stage of the season. Gary Neville even admitted on The Overlap's Stick to Football show recently that Sir Alex Ferguson had previously pulled him and others out of England duty while in the middle of a title race:

We may have seen something similar in the most recent break too, with Kevin De Bruyne pulling out of the Belgium squad and Ederson failing to travel with the Brazil squad before both were seen in Manchester City training recently.

When it comes to Arsenal, meanwhile, we saw Bukayo Saka travel before dropping out of Gareth Southgate's squad, whilst Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes also didn't travel with the Brazil squad. Unfortunately, Arsenal fans may be in for some bad news on the injury front.

Arsenal keen on "fantastic prospect" ahead of Manchester United – report

But the two sides might be pipped to the post.

Arteta admitted in his press conference ahead of the game that it's not clear whether any of the three players will make the City game. When quizzed on the fitness of Gabriel and the attacking duo, the Arsenal boss said (via Goal): "Yeah, there is a chance. They haven’t trained. Tomorrow we have another session, but there is a chance they can be available."

It would be some blow for the Gunners if they were to be missing not only two of their three starting forwards, but also one of their starting central defenders in a game that could make or break their title hopes. The fact that none of the doubts had trained until Friday at the earliest is undoubtedly cause for concern.

"Outstanding" Gabriel is crucial for Arsenal

Not many can stop Erling Haaland, but a defender of Gabriel's quality would stand a better chance than most, making him vital for Arsenal's clash against Manchester City. As important as Martinelli and Saka are, if Arsenal's strongest defensive duo is broken up at the Etihad, then the Gunners could find themselves in trouble.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand singled out the duo for praise earlier this season, saying on FIVE (via HITC): "The two centre-backs, I think, have been outstanding. To be fair, I called out Gabriel last season, at the back end of the run-in, because I thought he made a few rash decisions, penalties etc. I said at the time, if he doesn’t clear that up in his game, that’s gonna be something to be looked at.”

Now better than ever, Gabriel's fitness may be crucial to where the Premier League title ends up come May. By the end of this weekend's action, the picture will no doubt be clearer than ever if Arsenal secure victory at the Etihad, too.

Arteta could already have Arsenal’s answer to Endrick in Hale End star

Handing the youth an opportunity is key to the long-term success of any club, but even more so for a side like Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka is by far the biggest prospect to have thrived in the first team since progressing via the Hale End academy in recent years, but there’s plenty of talent waiting for a chance to shine.

Bukayo Saka.

The Gunners’ number seven will without doubt be a role model to those keen to replicate his exact footsteps, but the academy players will also be inspired by the rise to stardom of a certain Endrick.

The Brazilian has always been a one-of-a-kind prospect, but he truly announced himself in Europe last week on international duty, scoring against both England and Spain.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at an Arsenal U21 diamond who could be their answer to Endrick.

Endrick’s rise to success

At just 16 years of age, highly-rated wonderkid Endrick made his competitive debut for Brazilian side Palmeiras, becoming the club’s youngest debutant.

However, the centre forward was far from suffocated by the hostile atmosphere and experienced opposition, also taking on the status of the second-youngest goalscorer ever in the Serie A, Brazil’s top flight.

Endrick scores for Brazil

During his first real campaign in the first-team setup, Endrick helped Palmeiras achieve a consecutive league title, scoring 11 goals in 31 matches.

This form saw the youngster attract attention from across Europe before eventually signing a £60m deal to join Real Madrid this summer.

But what if Arsenal had their own version of Endrick, who’s just waiting to be given a break?

Arsenal's "golden" Hale End sensation may be the perfect Partey replacement

Arsenal’s answer to Endrick

With the fight for Champions League glory and Premier League triumph set to continue until the end of the season, finding an opportunity to give the youth a chance has been difficult for Mikel Arteta.

However, just like Endrick, Ethan Nwaneri made his competitive debut at an extremely young age, which clearly highlights just how talented the special ace is and how much the Spaniard believes in him.

The now-17-year-old was handed his first competitive appearance for the Gunners against Brentford in 2022, where the versatile ace took to the pitch at just 15 years of age, the youngest ever Arsenal debutant.

Despite holding such a prestigious record, Nwaneri has continued to work tirelessly in the academy to impress, mainly playing as an attacking midfielder this campaign.

As you can see by the table above, the “special” gem, as described by U23 Scout Antonio Mango, has been on fire, taking on more goal-scoring responsibility than creativity, with 14 goals and three assists in just 15 matches.

The number 63 is on a particular hot streak at the moment after being handed a short cameo by Arteta during the 6-0 win over West Ham United, scoring in his last five matches for club and country.

Although the next step for Nwaneri may be away from the Gunners, potentially on a loan, Endrick is the prime example that if you’re good enough, then opportunities will present themselves.

Arteta has certainly shown his intent to include the youngster in his squad, and with the England U-17 international signing his first professional contract this week, Arsenal well and truly have a superstar in the making.

Man Utd eyeing "big club manager" who could be their answer to Klopp

Manchester United have endured a season that very few saw coming after Erik ten Hag's successful first campaign in charge of the club last year.

The former Ajax boss looks worryingly out of his depth with just one win to his name in his last five Premier League games, despite playing Burnley, Sheffield United and Bournemouth in that period.

With the recent arrival of new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his ambitious plans to rejuvenate the club, it does feel like just a matter of time until he's replaced as manager, and there have been calls to hire a man who could be the club's own Jürgen Klopp.

Erik ten Hag's season

It really has been a season from hell for the Dutchman this year, and while the extensive injury list at Carrington is far from ideal and certainly hasn't helped, the performances on the pitch have been dreadful.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

The club were dumped out of the League Cup by Newcastle United in November and crashed out of the Champions League with one win, one draw and four defeats to their name, and in the league, the Red Devils are sitting in sixth place, 13 points off fourth, with a goal difference of plus one.

However, while it might not feel like it to the fans, the three-time European Champions have had a fair bit of luck this term, at least defensively.

According to Understat, they have scored 4.94 fewer goals than would be expected based on expected goals, but have conceded a whopping 15.72 fewer – the highest in the league – which translates to an expected points total of just 42.25, which would put them around 15th based on those metrics.

Now, while some of that overperformance can be put down to the talent of United's players, the extreme nature of it is more down to luck, luck that has saved a poor season from Ten Hag becoming a genuinely awful one.

With this in mind, it's not surprising to see so much talk about potential replacements coming in, and according to recent reports, one of the said replacements could be Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who has recently been compared to Klopp by a United legend.

Why Thomas Tuchel could be United's Jürgen Klopp

It might seem like a leap to compare Tuchel to Klopp. After all, the pair now epitomise completely different styles of football – at least in the eyes of English fans – with the former associated with pragmatic and arguably defensive football, while the latter is known for getting his sides to play high-intensity football whenever they can.

However, there are several similarities beyond their ages and nationalities, and former United keeper Peter Schmeichel certainly seems to think so. He described the Bayern boss as having the same "kind of thing that Klopp has" and that as a "big-club manager" he would be able to cope with the pressures of the United job.

That said, what are the similarities between the two Germans?

First, the former Chelsea man has previously followed in the footsteps of the Liverpool boss, taking charge of Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in his wake. Second, the pair are both larger-than-life personalities that seem to command respect wherever they go – or at least for a few years in Tuchel's case – and if the Krumbach-born gaffer does land the job he would also be walking into an English giant in need of rejuvenation, much like Klopp in 2015.

Lastly, while Tuchel is now seen as a defensively-minded coach by fans in England, he has shown in the past that he is more than happy to play full-throttle football, notably with Dortmund, when his side ended the 2015/16 season with a non-penalty expected goals figure of 78.84, which was 8.62 more than Bayern Munich managed.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

With that said, if the 50-year-old is going to replace Ten Hag, how do their managerial records stack up?

Well, in their most recent job, the German comes out ahead, with a points-per-game average of 2.05 to the Dutchman's 1.95. The gap is even more significant when looking at Tuchel's stint at Chelsea, as he averaged 2.08 points-per-game in West London.

Ultimately, while Ten Hag did a good job last season, his poor results this season, combined with his genuinely dreadful underlying numbers, suggest that it's time he moved on.

Therefore, if the Red Devils can get their hands on Tuchel as his replacement, then they should, as while he's not Klopp, he might be the next best thing.

Ratcliffe has an "incredible" top contender to replace Ten Hag at Man Utd
