In turn, fresh names are expected to arrive at Villa Park over the summer as they bid to give a good account of themselves in the Champions League. Chelsea man Conor Gallagher has been named as a target for Villa, with the club believed to have already entered preliminary negotiations for the Englishman.

Monchi ready to "go all in" to replace Aston Villa star

Recent reports from Italy stated that Aston Villa are "happy" to sell Matty Cash this summer, amid discussions with AC Milan. Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato [via Sport Witness] have shed further light on Cash's future and who the Villians may replace him with if he leaves.

The report claims AC Milan technical director Geoffrey Moncada met with Aston Villa director Monchi to discuss the potential transfer of Cash, with the Midlands side said to be willing to part ways with the Poland international for around £17m. At the same time, Villa are looking at the other side of Milan to replace Cash, with Inter's Denzel Dumfries named as the main target to replace the 26-year-old.

In terms of a fee for the Dutch full-back, Inter are said to want £17m, meaning Aston Villa would effectively pay nothing for Dumfries if they sell Cash to AC Milan for the same price, and Monchi is ready to "go all in" for the Dutchman if Cash is indeed sold.

Dumfries is two years older than Cash at 28, but unlike the Villa man, he has experience playing at the highest level in Europe. He started the 2022/23 Champions League final, which saw Inter bested by Manchester City, and has notched another 29 appearances in the competition – something Villa would likely find useful heading into the 2024/25 campaign. Dumfries also, on paper at least, had a better 2023/24 league campaign than the Aston Villa man.

The 17-year-old finds himself on the cusp of the first team at the Allianz Arena after a sensational season at youth level

A transformative season at youth level has propelled 17-year-old Lennart Karl into the first-team picture at Bayern Munich and, after a standout summer, the young attacker now stands a real chance of going from the academy to meaningful senior minutes in a matter of months.

It's an opportunity Karl is determined to seize. "I always want to play and prove myself, whether it's with the first team, the Under-19s or the Under-17s," he says in an interview with the Bavarian giants. "I intend to always give my all in order to continue to develop."

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany has been criticised for failing to utilise the club's academy properly so far in his short tenure, but Karl looks set to be the player to buck that trend. Here's everything you need to know about Die Roten's next wonderkid who is already pushing to break into the starting XI…

• Where it all began

  He might be Bayern's next big thing, but Karl actually hails from nowhere near Munich, albeit he's still Bavarian, having been born in February 2008 in Frammersbach in mid-west Germany, not far from Frankfurt.

  He took the first steps on the long road to becoming a professional footballer at Viktoria Aschaffenburg, a short distance from his hometown, aged seven in 2015. After catching the eye there, a move into the youth system of local Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt two years later was the natural progression on Karl's upward trajectory, honing his skills there on the futsal court.

  But Die Adler did not keep hold of him and, after a brief return to Aschaffenburg, he was snapped up by Bayern Munich in 2022, joining up with the academy at FC Bayern Campus.

• The big break

  Initially, it didn't seem like Karl would come so far so quickly, as he struggled to juggle football and his education. "To be honest, things didn't go well in my last U16 season," he said in a recent in-house interview. "I had fluctuations in my performances and didn't score many goals. I wanted to change that. In preparation for the U17 season, I did additional training, either on my own or with a coach from the campus. That helped me a lot – mentally and physically."

  There was certainly a shift in the next campaign, and Karl is fresh from a season that has propelled him into the first-team picture at the Allianz Arena at the age of 17. It began with him making an outrageous 33 goal contributions in just 14 games for the Under-17s, including a five-goal haul against Unterhaching to get the campaign underway.

  Those obscene statistics inevitably saw him bumped up two age grades to the U19s late in 2024 as Bayern looked to fast-track his development. By that point he had already done enough to earn links to European giants Real Madrid and Ajax, and he would make an immediate impression mixing it with the big boys, too, scoring against Augsburg's U19s on his debut.

  In March, he netted a hat-trick of near-identical left-footed goals from an Arjen Robben-esque position, and later the same month he went on a sublime slaloming run to score a sensational individual goal. 

  An outrageous return of 34 goals in 30 appearances across the U17s and U19s was ultimately too good for head coach Kompany to ignore, and Karl was handed his first-team bow as a half-time substitute in the 10-0 rout of Auckland City at the Club World Cup, having failed to make it off the bench for the senior side on five previous occasions.

• How it's going

  That was the preface to Karl being formally inducted into the senior side ahead of 2025-26, and emerged as the unlikely star of Bayern's pre-season games as he made a genuine claim for a starting berth in the season proper.

  Having played another half in the friendly victory over Lyon, the attacker scored just seven minutes after coming off the bench against Tottenham – bending a wonderful, first-time effort past Guglielmo Vicario from the edge of the penalty area to announce himself in front of the Allianz Arena crowd.

  The next day, Die Roten confirmed the teenager had signed a new three-year youth contract to put an end to any speculation surrounding him for the time being, with a view to a longer professional deal once he turns 18 in February 2026. The youngster also inherited Jamal Musiala's old No.42 shirt after his fellow academy graduate took the No.10.

  Karl celebrated by starring in Bayern's final pre-season friendly against Grasshoppers. He opened the scoring with another stunning strike, taking aim from distance before thumping a left-footed strike perfectly into the inside of the side netting, before showing off his dribbling skills on the right flank and laying the ball off to fellow youngster Jonah Kusi-Are to crash home the winner.

  Those pre-season displays led Karl to claim he was ready for more first-team action. "Everything went well in the friendlies," he told the media. "Now I definitely want to get playing time in the bigger games, for example against Stuttgart in the Supercup or in the Bundesliga."

  However, he was forced to settle for a place on the bench in the DFL-Supercup victory over Stuttgart, with Kompany introducing him with just one minute left on the clock.

  At international level, Karl has starred throughout the age grades for Germany and is currently in the U17s squad. He provided a ridiculous 11 goal contributions in six games in qualifying for the U17 European Championship, although he was unable to make an impact at the tournament proper as his nation bowed out early.

  Biggest strengths

  A No.10 who is equally adept playing out wide, Karl is a demon in the half-spaces, drifting inside menacingly from the right flank to get involved in the build-up, go on a mazy dribble or unleash a fierce left-footed strike, with his recent goals in the first team reflecting his shooting ability from long range. Indeed, the teenager has already earned comparisons to Bayern legend Robben due to the regularity with which he cuts in from the right and takes aim. It turns out that is something he's been working on.

  "I actually practised that specifically at the start of the season. It's since become automatic," Karl revealed. "I don't even think much about it in the moment. It just feels right. The goals then came naturally."

  In terms of his other strengths, Karl sums it up pretty nicely, although he is probably underselling his lightning-quick feet, close control and and vision for a pass: "I'm very quick over the first few metres, like to go one-on-one and have a good finish."

  Speaking about Karl recently, Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund said: "He’s very, very self-confident. That's one of his greatest strengths. He knows what he's capable of. You can see his quality on the pitch, too."

As you can see in the table above, the Cameroon international played regularly domestically and in Europe for the Hoops, and chipped in with goals and assists on a semi-regular basis.

GOAL reported in the summer of 2018 that Portuguese giants Porto came in with an offer of £13m to sign the dynamo but it was rejected by Celtic, who were not willing to sell him, and that turned out to be a howler from the club.

The talented whiz missed 24 matches for club and country through injury during the 2018/19 campaign, which restricted him to 37 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops.

After another 18 months of action with the Scottish side, Ntcham left to join Marseille on loan for the second half of the 2020/21 season in Ligue 1, where he played just four times in the league.

His contract with Celtic then expired in the summer of 2021 and he moved to join Swansea in the English Championship on a free transfer that year.

He departed from Parkhead after four years, 147 competitive appearances, 24 goals, 13 assists, and nine trophies won after his move from Manchester City in 2017.

Whilst the club may look at his achievements on the pitch, with his attacking contributions towards their impressive trophy haul during that period, as justification for the £4.5m they spent on him, it is hard to argue against them having messed up with the rejected bid from Porto.

They turned down a chance to make a huge profit, of £8.5m, on the Cameroon international and then allowed him to walk away for nothing three years later.

This shows that they had a nightmare as they did not have a chance to benefit financially from the success he had on the field, despite having the chance to do so when the bid arrived at their desk, as his value dropped from £13m to £0 when Ntcham left for nothing.

Chelsea have reportedly opened talks over another addition to the squad this summer as they look to balance their side under Mauricio Pochettino.

Season ending strongly under Pochettino

Despite a slow start, Chelsea are making a late push for a spot in next season's Europa League, and have showed glimpses of the side that they could become under Pochettino.

Their 5-0 hammering at the hands of Arsenal is their only defeat in the Premier League since February, and they are the fifth-best team in the division in 2024, behind only the Gunners, Manchester City, Newcastle and Liverpool.

That has seen them rocket up the table, and they are now just two points behind Newcastle United and firmly in the hunt for the final Europa League spot, while the six point gap to fifth placed Tottenham is not an impossible one to breach given the relative form of the two sides.

The Blues boss refused to describe it as a successful season, but admitted that he felt the staff and players are happy with the direction of the club.

"I cannot describe the season as a successful season if you don't win a title at Chelsea," said Pochettino. "Again, expectation is always to win titles."

"Circumstances have shown that the reality was really, really tough, from day one until today. But deep inside, the players and staff were living in the reality. I think the staff are happy and the players are so happy."

There is an expectation that the Blues will once again be active in the transfer market as they bid to complete their squad overhaul, and now light has been shed on just who they are targetting.

Talks opened for midfield maestro

That comes courtesy of the Daily Mail, who claim that Chelsea have "opened talks" for talented midfielder Georgiy Sudakov, currently at Shakhtar Donetsk.

The pair have a strong relationship after Chelsea signed Mykhaylo Mudryk from the Ukrainian outfit, and Sudakov appears to be the next star bound for Europe, with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all reportedly chasing his signature, though it is Chelsea that seem to lead the race.

Meanwhile, Shakhtar President Sergei Palkin has been touting his services at every opportunity.

Coach Marino Pusic dubbed him an "exceptionally talented" footballer, but added that he works hard to become better too: "He is an exceptionally talented footballer. Talent comes from nature or God, but you have to do something with it to develop it."

It is added that Sudakov is viewed as "first team ready" by Chelsea, while his addition could finally help bring the best out of Enzo Fernandez, who has struggled since his arrival 18 months ago. Could he be the missing piece in Pochettino's midfield?

A new manager could also be on the cards, with reports suggesting that Ratcliffe has already decided to move on Erik ten Hag and has identified Roberto De Zerbi as a replacement after a disappointing second campaign in charge.

On the pitch, The Manchester Evening News recently shared an in-depth story looking at 21 players who could leave the club this summer. It now appears as if the Red Devils are actively looking to sell one of those players mentioned.

Mason Greenwood transfer update

One player who could end up leaving Old Trafford for good this summer is Mason Greenwood, who, as we know, is currently on a season-long loan at Getafe. He was moved on last summer on deadline day months after off-field charges against him were dropped.

Now, according to a new update from Marca, Red Devils officials have travelled to Spain to resolve the forward’s future and have already held talks with Barcelona chief Deco over a potential permanent transfer.

United officials will also speak with Getafe and want around €50m (£42.7m) for Greenwood’s services, with Atletico Madrid another possible La Liga destination for the £75,000-a-week player.

Greenwood, who is out of contract in Manchester at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, has been a regular out on loan with Getafe, playing all across the front three and contributing to a goal every other game.

“You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“What we need to do when we have issues like that is understand real effects, not the hype. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. That’s what we need to do and that’s how we will deal with it.”

Both teams will picked based on performances during the tournament
