"Outstanding" £10k-a-week Liverpool player will now push for Anfield exit

Following several departures and emotional Anfield farewells on the final day of the Premier League season, Liverpool could yet lose one more player, who will reportedly push for a summer exit.

Liverpool transfer news

It was not the result against Wolverhampton Wanderers that took centre stage at Anfield. Instead, it was the goodbye to a Liverpool great in Jurgen Klopp. He made sure that it wasn't just him in the headlines, however, with a similar farewell for his coaching staff and players leaving as free agents, whilst also ensuring a fine welcome for Arne Slot.

The new manager arrives with plenty to do in what could be a busy first summer now that Michael Edwards has returned. The Reds have already been linked with the likes of Johan Bakayoko and even Real Madrid's Rodrygo, but only time will tell whether the Reds opt to welcome a new star winger. Instead, it could be a summer dominated by exit news.

Whilst it seems as though Mohamed Salah is set to stay put, the same can't be said for another member of the Anfield dressing room. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Caoimhin Kelleher is set to push for a Liverpool exit this summer amid a desire to have a permanent starting role.

The Irishman enjoyed his best season yet at Liverpool, playing an unexpectedly crucial role in the absence of Alisson Becker to play a huge part in the Reds' Carabao Cup win against Chelsea and their hunt – albeit one that ended in failure – to push for the Premier League title.

Truth be told, however, Alisson's number one place is unlikely to be taken on a permanent basis anytime soon as long as the Brazilian is around, meaning that Kelleher must seek minutes elsewhere this summer.

"Outstanding" Kelleher deserves a starting role

Liverpool should hold zero grudges if Kelleher does push for a move this summer. The goalkeeper, on just £10k-a-week at Anfield, has more than earned the chance to hunt down the number one role that he won't get in Merseyside and wherever he does end up, Klopp will likely be watching on in admiration, having been full of praise for him earlier this season.

Klopp said via This is Anfield: “He was outstanding (against Brentford). I don’t know exactly who is the number one for Ireland but if they have a better goalkeeper, respect. He’s outstanding. This year we gave him more games than he had previously. It’s well deserved.

"We need him. We need him with rhythm. Now the situation around Alisson shows that makes absolute sense. We will see how long Alisson is out, but Caoimhin is exceptional. (On Saturday) he had an A+ performance.”

That said, his exit will still prove to be a problem for Liverpool should it take place. It's a difficult task to find a shot-stopper not only happy to be a number two, but also one who can step up and come as close as possible to matching Alisson's quality – something Kelleher almost always did.

MI survive Fulmali scare to get closer to final, go up 6-0 against Gujarat Giants

MI are just behind Delhi Capitals on the points table and another win will get them a final berth

S Sudarshanan10-Mar-20255:38

Review: Fulmali’s blinder was incredible

Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their dominance over Gujarat Giants (GG) and took another step towards making a direct entry into the final of WPL 2025 with a nine-run win in their penultimate league match. The sparse home crowd was treated to a couple of stroke-filled knocks – MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur hit her third half-century in four outings at the Brabourne Stadium while Bharti Fulmali smashed her maiden WPL fifty, off just 22 balls, to give MI a mighty scare. In the first match in Mumbai this season, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amanjot Kaur played support acts to their captain as MI posted 179 for 6. GG were kept on a tight leash in reply, with the lack of dew doing them no favours. Amelia Kerr and Shabnim Ismail shared five wickets – the latter delivering the key blows of Ashleigh Gardner and Phoebe Litchfield – as GG were all out for 170. It was just the third time in 19 games this season that a team successfully defended a target. It was MI’s sixth win in six matches against GG in the WPL.The win took MI to ten points, on par with Delhi Capitals, with a net run rate of 0.298 (just below DC’s 0.396) and a game to spare. They play Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Tuesday in under 24 hours to round off the league stage. MI need to win that match to top the table and get a direct entry into the final, while the team that finishes second will play GG in the eliminator.Soon after GG fell just short, coach Michael Klinger said at the press conference that they tried to chase the target down in 18 overs, which would have taken them to the top of the table.

Fulmali blitz gives MIghty scare

GG were 70 for 5 in the 11th over and Deandra Dottin had survived a dropped chance just before Fulmali walked out. She got to her task by taking Sciver-Brunt for three fours in an over – one square through the off side, one over cover and then through square leg. It is not often that a batter outshines Dottin and causes headache to the opposition but such was Fulmali’s assault. Soon Kerr bowled Dottin to leave GG’s equation down to 88 off 41.Bharti Fulmali smashed a 22-ball fifty•BCCI

Fulmali then walloped Kerr over long-on and did the same to Amanjot in the next over. Overall, she scored 24 off the nine balls she faced of Kerr, including a sequence of 6, 6, 4 which helped her to a 22-ball fifty before she fell in the same over. That left GG needing 38 off the 18, which soon became 23 off 12 after Simran Shaikh, in for Dayalan Hemalatha, and Tanuja Kanwar hit Matthews for 15. But MI held their nerves despite a frenetic finish to register their fifth win in seven matches.

Opening troubles continue for MI

For the second game in a row, MI opened the batting with Kerr after being inserted. She faced the left-arm spin of Kanwar for starters before clipping Kashvee Gautam for a four. But she found it tough to rotate strike and was run-out after pushing one straight to Gardner at mid-on and setting off.It was Matthews and Sciver-Brunt who provided MI the momentum in the powerplay. They exploited the short boundary – the square boundaries measured 58m and 52m – by moving around the crease. Matthews pulled her West Indies team-mate Dottin over deep square leg for a six in the opening over before aerially sweeping Kanwar in the same region for another. Sciver-Brunt also swept Kanwar through short fine leg as MI were 44 for 1 after six overs.

The Kaurs set MI for a strong finish

Legspinner Priya Mishra had Matthews caught behind soon after the powerplay. Like she has been doing this season, Harmanpreet started off swiftly – she reversed Mishra through short third with the back of her bat and then attacked Meghna Singh in the only over she bowled. MI’s run rate hovered in the early sevens and she, in the company of Sciver-Brunt, ensured it never dipped. They added 59 off 40 before Gardner broke through. The reverse sweep from Harmanpreet Kaur… from the back of the bat•BCCI

That brought Amanjot to the crease at No. 5 for only the second time in the WPL. She drove Dottin through the covers and then meted out special treatment to Gautam, with whom she has trained with for over a decade now, hitting her for a sequence of 4, 4, 6 to help MI take 15 off the 17th over. Gautam did have the last laugh by having Amanjot caught at long-on for a 15-ball 27 to end the 19-ball 33-run stand. Harmanpreet then completed her half-century off just 31 balls as MI scored 55 off the last four overs, the exact equation GG needed in the chase.

Early strikes cost Giants

Having benched the misfiring Hemalatha, GG opted to use Gautam as the opener alongside Beth Mooney, who popped a catch to cover on the first ball of Matthews’ spell. While Gautam does possess the ability to hit big shots down the order, she was like a deer caught in headlights against the high-pace and swing of Ismail. Gautam was on 9 off 12 balls with nine dots at the end of the fifth over when GG were 34 for 1. She just managed to get away from a 120kph short ball Ismail hurled at her. Gautam fell in the last over of the powerplay, stumped off Sanskriti Gupta’s offspin. Two balls later, Ismail had Gardner caught low at slip for a two-ball duck, that was a body blow for GG. While Harleen Deol hit five fours against spin – three of them in successive balls off Matthews – she missed a googly from Kerr to be trapped lbw. GG could have lost steam and finished much lower than what they did, if not for Fulmali.

Kraigg Brathwaite laments inability to adapt to spinning conditions

West Indian captain Kraigg Brathwaite did not ignore the elephant in the room, but did not hide behind it, either. He said straightaway that Pakistan “prepared a dry spinning pitch from day one”, while acknowledging it was their right to do so, and challenging both his batters and his bowlers to adapt to it better in the second Test.”We expect the same type of pitch in the second Test and we’ve got to come better,” Brathwaite said at the post-Test press conference. “It was a difficult pitch to bat on for sure. But it’s their decision how they want the pitch. We’ve just got to come good.”What encouraged Brathwaite was West Indies’ ability to, for the most part, match their hosts toe-to-toe. While Sajid Khan and Noman Ali found themselves in the wickets, the best bowling figures of the Test belonged to West Indian left arm spinner Jomel Warrican, whose figures of 7 for 32 in the second innings are the third best ever by a visiting bowler in a Test in Pakistan. With the bat, too, West Indies’ efforts of 137 and 123 weren’t worlds removed from Pakistan’s second innings score of 157, with a first innings fifth wicket stand of 141 between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan the sharpest point of difference.”It’s great to see. Jamal has worked extremely hard over the years and it’s good to see he got his first five-wicket haul. His hard work has paid off. He bowled well; he was consistent. I wish him all the best in his second test match.”I do think we could improve bowling wise. We gave them 50-60 runs too much in the first innings because the pitch spun from ball one and we could have created enough pressure on the batters to get more wickets. Saying that, we also didn’t bat as well as we could. I think Alick [Athanaze, whose fourth innings 55 was West Indies highest individual score] showed us today how easy it can be. You’ve got to be braver in your shot selection. But I think a better all-round performance and we could win the second Test.”Jomel Warrican took 10 for 101 in the match•AFP/Getty Images

With the pitch tricky and the Test match short, smaller differences were always going to prove decisive, and Brathwaite was keen to stress that, despite the margin of victory, he felt the disparity between the two sides was small. With Pakistan’s strategy certain – both captains effectively confirmed they expected a similar turner for the second Test – which also takes place in Multan, starting on January 25 – surprise is not something that can catch West Indies out.”I think we could be better with the ball in the first innings. We gave them 50 runs too much, and on top of that, we didn’t bat as well as we could have, especially in the first innings. Both innings the top order didn’t get any runs. So I think batting wise the top six should be able to bat at least a session.”Pakistan only batted one session in their second innings, too, and I think bowling wise once we stay consistent in bringing batters onto the front foot, we’ll have a better chance of limiting that first innings total. And we’ve got to bat better, we’ve got to find a better way.”While he didn’t commit to that strategy, perhaps judicious aggression, a measure of which West Indies began to introduce into their batting as each innings wore on, is something West Indies might look to do more of next week. Some batters found the use of reverse sweeps from outside the line a fruitful scoring option, while West Indies’ most destructive phase with the bat came when the tenth wicket partnership put on 46 in 21 balls, taking the spinners on when they flighted the ball.”The ball was ragging, so one is going to have your name on it regardless. The pitch was difficult as you could see. It was very dry before even the game started. So I’m not surprised with the game finishing early.”

Saved by Bowen: 5/10 West Ham man should never wear the shirt again

West Ham United's chances of securing a fourth successive season in European competition are slender, with Saturday's spirited and impressive draw against Liverpool in the Premier League widening the gap on seventh-placed Newcastle United.

Newcastle, whose season has been categorised by inconsistency and injuries, are four points clear in the final European football-qualifying position, holding a game in hand on the Hammers.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

With trips to Chelsea and Manchester City still forthcoming for David Moyes, it would seem that a wonderful slice of history will draw to a close, though Saturday's result highlighted the immense quality that West Ham – and whoever will lead the club from the dugout next season – boast.

At the forefront: Jarrod Bowen. The England international, quite simply, is a brilliant and irreplaceable player.

Jarrod Bowen's stats vs Liverpool

Bowen has been in fine fettle this season. In fact, that's quite the understatement, with the dynamic forward scoring 20 goals and supplying ten assists, the latest of which came one apiece against Liverpool.

The 27-year-old only managed to complete five passes against Jurgen Klopp's deteriorating side but this hardly matters given his clinical attacking moments and persistent defensive commitment.

Within a system like Moyes', with West Ham ranking 15th in possession in the Premier League this season, such prolific authority has paid dividends – just imagine how Bowen might perform at the heart of a more expansive and progressive brand of football.

He must remain at the very kernel of the United project, though the same cannot be said for Angelo Ogbonna, who struggled against the Reds and must follow Moyes, should the Scotsman indeed leave when his contract expires this summer, out the door at the London Stadium.

Why Angelo Ogbonna must now be ditched

Ogbonna has entered the twilight phase of his career, nearly 36 years old, and while he has been something of a stalwart for West Ham after signing from Juventus in a £10m transfer in 2015, the Italian is out of contract this summer and to renew his terms would be a fatal error.

Angelo Ogbonna

Having completed 247 matches for his east London club, the centre-back has been restricted to a bit-part role over the past several years, starting just five Premier League fixtures this term.

And it's deservedly so. His mobility has been eradicated by the passage of time, while his once-robust skill set has left him averaging only 0.9 tackles and 1.8 duels per match this season.

Against high-level opposition in Liverpool, Ogbonna's understandable fragilities were exposed, with The Evening Standard's Dom Smith giving the veteran a 5/10 match score and writing: 'Beaten in the air on a number of occasions and caught too high up as Liverpool easily bypassed him in the first half. Improved after the interval and was unlucky to be involved in the own-goal.'

As per Sofascore, the 6 foot 3 defender made five clearances and four tackles against Liverpool but he completed just 64% of his passes and was dribbled past. Were Liverpool not so profligate, his issues would likely have been compounded.

With Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd both expected to return from injury imminently, Ogbonna may well have played his last match for the club, which will fare better with their younger and most durable titans in the starting mix.

Ogbonna has been a brilliant servant for West Ham and he got to kiss silverware before his departure, but that exit must materialise this summer as the club prepares for a new era. Make it happen, Tim Steidten.

Contact made to sign "special" Liverpool star who FSG say is "not for sale"

Liverpool could be set to lose one of their stars this summer after contact was made to sign him ahead of the upcoming transfer window, it has emerged.

Reds still on track for historic year

Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage courtesy of a late Amad Diallo goal, Liverpool's season could still be an excellent one.

Sat second in the Premier League, they trail Arsenal only on goal difference and are a point ahead of Manchester City. Immediately after the international break, the Gunners travel to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's side, meaning that at least one of Liverpool's title rivals are guaranteed to drop points in their next outing.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp's side have also been drawn on the favourable side of the Europa League draw, and will face Italian side Atalanta in the last eight before a sem-final showdown with either Benfica or Marseille. On top of that, they have already bagged the Carabao Cup thanks to a late Virgil van Dijk winner against Chelsea last month.

But there are concerns beyond this season, with Jürgen Klopp and Pep Lijnders both set to leave the club at the end of the campaign, and significant speculation surrounding Mo Salah, who will be down to the final year of his contract at the club and has previously been subject to interest from Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool man holding meetings to pick next club after exit decision made

He is planning to use the two-week international break to weigh up his options.

ByBen Browning Mar 16, 2024 Diaz a 'priority' but not for sale

Now, a concerning report has emerged that another man could leave, with Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna claiming that PSG's Qatar owners have made Luis Diaz their 'priority' this summer as they look to find a way to live without superstar Kylian Mbappe, who is set to join Real Madrid.

It is added that contact has already been made with Diaz's agent, who worked with PSG previously to help them sign Brazilian star Neymar.

However, there is a major sticking point, with FSG dubbing Diaz 'not for sale' amid what is set to be a hectic summer already. Though he has had issues with fitness since his arrival, the Colombian is a firm fan favourite and is loved around the club too.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

Speaking last season as Diaz struggled with injuries, the Liverpool boss was effusive in his praise of the Colombian.

"He's a natural player. I love him, absolutely love him. It's unbelievable", Klopp told Liverpool.com. "He's so football smart, moving in the right areas, naturally defending from his position, goal threat, speed, cheeky. Very, very special player, I have to say. We missed him a lot."

Klopp, of course, will no longer be at the helm, but there is little reason to suggest FSG or Liverpool would be willing to let Diaz leave barring an offer that they simply couldn't refuse.

'Doing too much' – Sir Jim Ratcliffe voices his opinion on Erik ten Hag after manager narrowly escaped Man Utd sacking as INEOS chief explains how club 'lost its way' under Glazer ownership after sir Alex Ferguson's departure

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Erik ten Hag was "doing too much" as Manchester United boss, while explaining why the club had "lost its way" over the years.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United's minority owner Ratcliffe has spoken about how "good guy" Ten Hag was concerning himself with too many things, as the Dutchman just about held onto his job earlier this summer. The INEOS owner also said the high turnover of managers since the departure of Alex Ferguson in 2013 suggests the club's problems also lay at a senior level. Moreover, the Scot's exit, along with former managing director David Gill, left a "vacuum" underneath the Glazer family.

    WHAT SIR JIM RATCLIFFE SAID

He told : “Erik is a good guy and had been doing his best, but doing too much. He was trying to sort out the squad and fix leaks in the roof at the same time.”

On the club's downfall, he said: “What happened is that Alex Ferguson and David Gill left at the same time, 11 years ago. Up until that point, those two had been managing the sports side of the club and the Glazer family had managed the commercial side very well. And then all of a sudden there’s this vacuum.”

He added the club had "Clearly lost its way. I mean, the results speak for themselves. In the last ten or eleven years, it should have been a contender for the Premier League and Champions League [trophies] every year and it hasn’t at all. It is a big responsibility to return the club to where it should be. It should be performing at least in the top eight in Europe. Now if we can’t do that then we won’t have been successful.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ratcliffe certainly seems intent on restoring United to their former glory but there is a long way to go before achieving that goal. They have tried to be aggressive in the transfer market, while not paying above what they want for players such as Joao Neves and Manuel Ugarte. Red Devils fans will certainly be happy there is a more active figurehead in place, rather than the somewhat aloof and distant Glazer family owners.
