Pant on his life-threatening car crash: 'I felt my time in this world was over'

In a chat with Star Sports, Pant talks about the accident, his state of mind, the joy of watching the 2023 Ashes, and whether he will drive a car again

Pant: ‘Don’t know why I was compared to Dhoni’

The first thought that came to Rishabh Pant immediately after his life-threatening car crash on December 30, 2022 was that his “time in this world was over.” Having been “fortunate to have a second life”, Pant, who is expected to play in IPL 2024, said the biggest lesson he has learned from this experience is to always have self-belief.That was the theme of his revealing conversation with Star Sports, titled . Pant talked about the accident, his state of mind, the joy of watching the 2023 Ashes, and whether he will drive a car again.”First time in my life I had that feeling of letting it go. I felt my time in this world was over,” Pant said in the interview, which was conducted in Bengaluru on August 24, 2023, roughly eight months after the accident occurred when Pant was driving from Delhi to Roorkee to meet his family and crashed his car into the median divider on the road. “It was the first time I had such a feeling in life. At the time of the accident, I was aware of the wounds, but I was lucky as it could have been even more serious.”Related

Pant: I've found happiness in even being able to brush my teeth

Pant 'forever grateful and indebted' to individuals who took him to hospital

After undergoing initial treatment at a hospital in Dehradun, Pant was airlifted to Mumbai where he was under the care of the BCCI’s specialist consultant. After undergoing surgeries to reconstruct all three ligaments in his right knee, Pant did his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.”I am focusing on recovery cut off from the world,” he said. “It helps me in recovering fast, especially when the injury is so serious. For recovery, you have to do the same thing every day. It’s boring, it’s irritating, it’s frustrating, but you have to do it.”Till the time I start playing cricket, I don’t want to plan much for the future. I asked the doctor how long it would take for me to recover. I told him that everybody is speaking different things, but you will give me the most clarity about it. He said it would take 16 to 18 months. I told the doctor that whatever timeline he gave me, I would reduce six months from it.”

Pant said he was alive because of Rajat Kumar and Nishu Kumar, who pulled Pant out of his SUV before it went up in flames. In a social-media post last January, Pant said he was “forever grateful and indebted” to them.Recounting details of those initial moments after the car crash, Pant said his right knee had dislocated – turning 90 degrees to the right as he was lying face down. “There was someone around so I asked if he could help getting the leg back in the position. He helped the knee get back in place.”He was in excruciating pain and later realised how lucky he was to emerge from the accident without losing his leg. “If there was any nerve damage, there was a possibility of amputation. That is when I felt scared.”Jovial and chirpy by nature, Pant didn’t miss out on making a light-hearted comment. “I had taken an SUV, but what I was seeing was a sedan.”‘Will he play cricket again?’Puneet Solanki, Pant’s friend-cum-manager, was one of the first to reach the hospital after the accident along with the player’s mother and sister. Solanki recounted Pant’s first words. “Immediately after the first surgery, one of his eyes was open. He asked me to come closer. He then whispered in my ear: ‘Please take the pads off my legs and hold these gloves’.”0:46

Pant: ‘I was made to feel at home even though I was around my super-seniors’

Pant remembers that moment. He was heavily sedated because of the anaesthesia. “I remember saying ‘take the pads off quickly, my leg has become really heavy’.” There was nothing Pant’s family and friends could do. Solanki’s biggest and most immediate fear was: would Pant ever play again?’A second life’Pant said he was bedridden for about a month. He was itching to stand up and walk around and do normal things. Last February, on social media, he posted a picture of him taking his first steps since the accident. “I wanted to update all the people who had prayed for my recovery and health.”Brushing his teeth, taking baths and doing things that we do robotically in daily life became exciting for Pant as he started regaining fitness and starting to move around, albeit very slowly.”I didn’t think I would ever enjoy brushing my teeth. The first time I took a bath, I didn’t feel like coming out. These small things gave me joy because I’m fortunate to have a second life. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get it.A sight for the sore eyes: Rishabh Pant back in the nets•PTI “Doctors also said that there was no fracture after the accident. Yes, my knee injury was major, but this could have been so big, that none of us can know. They always tell me I am lucky. Of course, it was such a horrific accident, the individual feels bad that this happened to me. How can I be lucky? But the other side is that despite the crash, I was alive.”‘Rohit says we will play Rishball’Around August last year, Pant started picking up the bat, putting on the keeping gloves, and thinking about cricket. Delhi Capitals, the IPL franchise he is the captain of, posted a picture of him batting as part of the country’s Independence Day celebrations. Pant admits he couldn’t “resist” the temptation to bat. Those in authority, possibly the BCCI medical staff, scolded him. He didn’t mind.Barring the 2023 Ashes, Pant resisted watching cricket. He was spotted in Capitals’ change room last IPL, watching their home matches in Delhi. ” [I didn’t enjoy that much],” Pant said. “I was thinking we could do things this way or that way. I was discussing some things with them [Capitals’ think tank]. But since I was outside, it was different. When you are inside, you control certain things.”Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting having a chat with Rishabh Pant on the sidelines of IPL 2023•Delhi CapitalsPant realised he was getting “stressed”, so he cut down on watching the IPL. But he followed the 2022-23 Ashes, which he said was fun. “Because England have started playing in a certain fashion, something I am used to [playing]. Rohit says we will also play Rishball. He says you play that anyway, but we will get others also to follow you.”‘I will still drive because I love to’Pant, who is 26 now, made his international debut exactly seven years ago, on February 1, 2017. His last match was the second Test of the Bangladesh series in December 2022. Since then, he has missed out on the IPL and the home ODI World Cup, apart from other bilateral series. He does not want to think too far ahead; instead, his focus is solely on the rehab programme. But what about driving cars? “I will still drive because I love to,” he said. “Just because there was a setback doesn’t mean that you do not do those things ever again. Nowadays I am told, ‘, don’t drive [at all].’ But no one was more scared than me. No one was more upset than me.”As a human being, I want to add things to my life. Not by eliminating what I like doing. The accident is a setback. How do you overcome that? By having the belief. That belief keeps growing and at times can border on the obsessive. But if you have belief in yourself, you can achieve anything.”

da luck: The hope is that, in three months time, Liverpool will be gearing up to defend their Premier League title, 12 points clear at the summit as they are. However, dropped levels in recent fixtures have made a firm comment on the need for reinforcements, especially up front.

The frontline just hasn’t been firing as expected since the turn of the calendar year, but it’s not just forwards on FSG’s mind. Indeed, Liverpool have learned the conditions for one of their top summer targets and talks are being held.

Liverpool learn conditions for top target

As per The Times, Liverpool have been informed that it will take a fee worth £45m to convince Bournemouth to part ways with left-back Milos Kerkez this summer.

Kerkez, 21, has been one of the standout full-backs in the Premier League this season and is looking to move on at the end of the season, with Liverpool among the frontrunners for his signature.

Caught Offside have also chipped in to reveal that Liverpool have opened talks with the Hungarian’s representatives ahead of the summer market, looking to get ahead as a swarm of European clubs – including Arsenal and the dreaded Real Madrid – also register interest.

Why Liverpool must sign Kerkez

Liverpool need to freshen up their left-back zone this summer, one of the weaker points of Slot’s squad. Kerkez is young and hungry and fearsome in his approach, and while he would shore up the backline, he’d also add plenty to the attacking fluency.

Just imagine, for example, if Liverpool succeed in their pursuit of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, interest confirmed by The Athletic.

Isak would certainly mark an upgrade on Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, both flagging, bringing an incredible multi-facetedness that has led pundit Ally McCoist to hail him as “the best all-round centre-forward” in the Premier League.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

Criticism around Andy Robertson has maybe been a little harsh this term, but there’s little question that the 31-year-old is on the decline, having failed to register a single goal involvement, also averaging just 0.1 dribbles per game, as per Sofascore.

Meanwhile, Kerkez is thriving for Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, posting two goals and five assists in the Premier League while charging up and down the wing with tireless energy.

As per FBref, Kerkez’s creativity has led him to rank among the top 10% of full-backs in the Premier League this term for assists per 90.

He’s a “machine” – according to pundit Izzy Christiansen – and would be a dream for Isak, adding energy and impetus that has sadly passed the aging Robertson by, supercharging the left flank.

By driving into the danger area with frightening regularity, whipping in delicious crosses and bypassing hapless opponents, the Hungary international could be the perfect creative muse for Isak – especially if Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves for Real Madrid this summer.

Isak is an incredibly prolific striker, but his movement and intelligence make for an all-embracing wheelhouse that would feed directly into Kerkez’s strengths.

If both players sign for the Reds this summer, fans should get very excited indeed.

ECB set to bring in multi-year contracts for England Men

Revamp of central contracts system comes as part of bid to prevent talent drain to global T20 franchise circuit

Vithushan Ehantharajah22-Sep-2023The ECB has offered unprecedented three-year contracts in a bid to quell the threat of franchise teams co-opting England’s best and brightest cricketers. The deals are a revamp of the pre-existing central contract structure which solely featured year-long deals, and come at a time when IPL ownership has spread into other T20 competitions around the world, allowing franchises to recruit players solely for their purposes all year round. It is understood 26 contracts have been offered, an increase from the 18 full and six incremental contracts handed out last October. Of the 26, around 20 are multi-year deals, with a group of top players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Mark Wood in receipt of three-year packages.Jonny Bairstow is understood to be one of the majority offered two-year contracts. Single-year offers are on the table for those not featuring on the franchise circuit, such as Jack Leach, and others at the back end of their careers, like James Anderson, who recently turned 41.It is perhaps with regard to fast bowlers that the protection of assets is most evident. Young quicks like Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson, who made their international debuts this summer, are expected to sign multi-year contracts. Similarly, Jofra Archer, 28, could be in line for a three-year deal having reportedly been subject of much interest from Mumbai Indians looking to recruit him full time. Archer played for MI Cape Town in the SA20 at the start of the year ahead of his IPL season with Mumbai, which ended prematurely through injury.England’s players will now decide whether to accept the contracts. While the basic remuneration has been agreed upon, those offered multiple years may request 12-month deals to give themselves greater flexibility. These contracts, which will come into effect from the start of October, represent a significant step forward for the ECB after a month of back and forth with the England team. There will inevitably be kinks to iron out and disgruntled players who have narrowly missed out on the initial batch. But by and large, the situation is regarded as more beneficial, particularly for those who go on to sign lengthier contracts.”It’s certainly not negative, it kind of gives you a bit of security,” Ben Duckett, who is understood to have been offered a two-year contract, said ahead of England’s second ODI against Ireland. “I think it’s great that they’re offering these contracts.”The security of players wanting to keep playing for England is perfect. For me the main thing is walking out and representing my country, it’s not really a contract but that’s a bonus.”The number and size of the respective contracts are possible through an additional £3.4million added by the ECB to the collective pot, with the split among the 26 players decided by a performance rating points system. The system awards points relating to all three formats, ranging from whether a player is likely to feature in Test and white-ball squads to “recognition of extraordinary performance” in the previous 12-month cycle. These will be re-assessed annually.Finer points are still to be ironed out, notably insurance pay for injury and other such clauses.

Liverpool line up club-record bid for "incredible" £100m+ ex-Man City star

Liverpool are now lining up a club-record bid to sign an “incredible” former Manchester City player, who could cost over £100m this summer, according to a report.

Reds eyeing Darwin Nunez replacements

Darwin Nunez has received widespread criticism this season, and there were suggestions the Uruguayan could make a move to Saudi Arabia during the January transfer window, although he ultimately ended up staying at Anfield.

However, it is clear the end could be near for Nunez, as the Reds are stepping up their pursuit of a new striker, and a recent report has revealed they have opened talks over a deal for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Contact has also been made with the representatives of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, but the Sweden international will not come cheap, as the Magpies are looking to hold out for a fee of £148m for their talisman.

As such, Isak may be unattainable this summer, and another option is seemingly moving up the list of targets, with a report from Anfield Watch revealing Liverpool are now lining up a club-record bid to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.

The Spanish club value Alvarez very highly, and it may take an offer of over £100m to tempt them into a sale, but the Reds are undeterred by the valuation, having been keen on the forward for quite some time.

Atletico Madrid'sJulianAlvarezscores a penalty during the penalty shootout wich is later disallowed after a VAR review

Prior to the former Manchester City man’s move to La Liga, talks were held with Pep Guardiola’s side, but an agreement could not be struck, given the high asking price and an insistence that Luis Diaz would be used as a makeweight.

There could be a new approach made for the 25-year-old, however, as he is viewed internally as a perfect fit for Arne Slot’s side, given his work-rate, ability to play in multiple positions, and keen eye for goal.

"Incredible" Alvarez is proven at the top level

During his time with Manchester City, the striker was lauded as “incredible” by Guardiola, who also praised him for the “massive” contribution he made to their success.

Despite having a penalty ruled out in controversial fashion against Real Madrid earlier this week, the Argentina international has gone on to impress at Atletico Madrid, too, racking up a remarkable 22 goals and five assists in all competitions.

That said, considering the Atletico star is contracted until 2030, it may be very difficult to prise him away from the Spanish side this summer, and some other targets mentioned in the report may be more attainable.

The Reds are said to hold a good relationship with RB Leipzig, which could give them the edge in the race for Sesko, while Isak is believed to be keen on a move to Merseyside.

Get rid: Maresca should have sold Chelsea man who earns more than Garnacho

Chelsea haven’t been afraid to splash the cash since the arrival of wonder Todd Boehly back in 2022, with the American splashing over £1.2b on new additions in the process.

It has enabled boss Enzo Maresca to have superb squad depth this season with multiple key options across various different positions across the pitch.

Given the Europa Conference League campaign this campaign, it has allowed the 44-year-old to rest his key players, often fielding a completely different starting eleven in Europe.

Chelsea managerEnzoMarescaapplauds fans after the match

One transfer window, in particular, has led to their recent success in the Premier League, edging them ever closer to securing a return to

Champions League football at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s transfer window in January 2023

Enzo Fernández moved to the Blues in January 2023, costing Boehly a whopping £106.8m – a transfer fee that would break the club’s transfer record.

The Argentine has been impressive over the last couple of months, regaining his starting position after losing his place in the starting eleven after the Italian’s appointment.

However, the 24-year-old enjoyed a run between November and December which saw him register a goal or an assist in seven consecutive matches – helping the Blues win every game in their Europa Conference League group.

Noni Madueke was another player who arrived during the aforementioned month, costing £29m from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven – becoming a key player in recent times.

The Englishman has made 72 appearances for the Blues, scoring 17 times and registering assists, with Maresca trusting him to nail down the position on the right wing.

However, the Italian boss tried to delve into the market over the last couple of weeks to land a player who could’ve featured alongside Madueke in the final third.

The player who earns nearly 2x more than Garnacho at Chelsea

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho was a name constantly touted over a move to West London during January, but a move for the Argentine failed to materialise.

The youngster was seen as an option for the left-hand side after Mykhailo Mudryk’s ongoing suspension, but Maresca was unable to complete any deal, subsequently having to operate with the options currently at his disposal.

It would’ve been another huge investment from the hierarchy, but as well as incomings, the American needed to make some key calls on departures to reduce the bloated squad following the arrivals.

One of the players who should’ve been offloaded is centre-back Benoit Badiashile, who’s failed to make an impression under the new boss, casting doubt on his long-term future at the club after arriving in the same window as Fernandez and Madueke.

The Frenchman cost £35m two years ago, but this year has been unable to force himself into the starting eleven, starting just twice in the Premier League in 2024/25.

His lack of minutes, coupled with his huge fee should’ve seen him moved, especially to prevent the club from losing a fortune on the fee forked out for his signature.

Badiashile also pockets a small fortune despite his lack of action, earning £90k-per-week – a figure nearly two times higher than winger target Garnacho who’s only earning £50k-per-week despite his rapid rise at Old Trafford.

Given his mammoth income, Maresca should’ve parted ways with the former Monaco man, which could’ve allowed for added investment during the window just gone.

With the summer transfer window opening in just a few months’ time, it gives the boss another chance to make alterations to his playing squad, with the departure of Badiashile needing to be right up there on his list of priorities.

Ismail-led Hurricanes get past Stars despite Lanning 50-ball 75

Hurricanes and Stars remain in the bottom half of the points table

Tristan Lavalette02-Nov-2023

Shabnim Ismail picked up three top-order wickets to keep the Stars to a moderate total•Getty Images

Hobart Hurricanes overcame a vintage 75 from Meg Lanning, as Nicola Carey and Naomi Stalenberg chased superbly under pressure to thwart Melbourne Stars at Bellerive Oval.Bucking the tournament’s trend, an increasingly confident Hurricanes were nerveless under lights to reach the target of 143 with four balls to spare. Carey and Stalenberg combined for a partnership of 69 unbroken runs after coming together at 74 for 4 following the key wicket of captain Elyse Villani. They played risk-free cricket as Hurricanes comfortably crossed the target having been in trouble earlier in the innings.Villani and Lizelle Lee had started watchfully in the powerplay as they blunted a desperate Stars attack facing an uphill battle to defend a seemingly modest total. But Lee holed out to Sasha Moloney in the sixth over to trigger a collapse as Hurricanes slumped to 47 for 3 when Heather Graham was caught behind off Annabel Sutherland.Much like counterpart Lanning earlier, Villani defied her team’s predicament by batting calmly and hitting attractive shots around the wicket. Stars were feeling the brunt of not only Villani’s bat, but also a pesky bird feeling rather territorial in the outfield.Hurricanes took the power surge in the 11th over, but it did not have the desired effect with Villani on 41 succumbing to a Sutherland slower delivery.Meg Lanning made the Stars innings a one-person show•Getty Images

But Carey and Stalenberg were unruffled as Hurricanes continued to turn around their season after starting with a pair of big defeats against Perth Scorchers.Having only taken one wicket in her first four matches, Shabnim Ismail rattled Stars’ misfiring top order while Molly Strano shackled a succession of batters with her accurate offspin.Hurricanes’ bowlers were aided by reckless batting from Stars. Playing a lone hand with a 50-ball 75, Lanning rescued Stars from peril at 46 for 4 with no other batter reaching 20 runs.It was not the performance envisioned from Stars when Lanning elected to bat on a flat surface. She watched on glumly as opener Sophie Reid holed out in the first over to Strano, who bowled a wicket maiden.A buoyant Hurricanes went on the attack with Ismail bowling short of a length. The plan worked almost immediately with Alice Capsey baited into hitting a rising delivery straight to Carey at third. At 5 for 2, it was left to Lanning and Sutherland to steady the ship but they continued to be confronted by a hostile Ismail armed with an aggressive field.Having emerged from a form rut against Scorchers with 49 off 27 balls, Sutherland briefly showcased her growing repertoire of inventive strokes to become the youngest player to reach 1000 runs in the WBBL. She clubbed Ismail down the ground, but on the next delivery miscued a delivery angled into her body straight to mid-on.Lanning rebuilt the innings by playing cautiously initially and she received support from Sophia Dunkley, who on two survived a missed stumping from Lee off Amy Smith.Lanning decided to put the foot down in the 12th over with three boundaries off Maisy Gibson. She accelerated further after taking the power surge in the 15th over and reached her half-century in style with a clip on the leg side. Not even the return of Ismail slowed down Lanning, who smashed a full toss for six as she eyed a remarkable century. But Lanning’s dismissal in the 18th over put the brakes on as Stars finished with a total that ultimately proved insufficient in the batting-friendly conditions.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. women's national team star Trinity Rodman finally returned to training with the Washington Spirit after a lengthy absence, time spent receiving specialized treatment for a persistent back injury she says caused her pain "all the time."

"I'm just happy to be back and actually in team training and not coming back on the side from step one," Rodman said Tuesday.

Rodman has been battling the injury for many months, but returned to the U.S. squad in early April for friendlies against Brazil, scoring just minutes into her return. The match was her first for the USWNT since the 2024 Olympics. The 23-year-old stepped away again, however, and hasn't played for the NWSL side since April 12, when she came off the bench to play 45 minutes in a 2-0 win over Racing Louisville.

"I think for me mentally, it was really hard," Rodman said. "Now being better and fixing the problem – I can now kind of openly say I was in pain all the time – working through that was difficult. Obviously, it sucks being away from the team and being away from soccer in general. But I got to work on things that I wouldn't have gotten to work on if I was in the team environment all the time, so I think that was a positive."

Rodman said she is now better prepared to adjust her game to benefit her long-term health.

"I'm still gonna be intense, and I'm still gonna give it 100 percent all the time," she said, "but I think there's parts of my game where I need to save energy or adjust to certain tackles. And I think I've been doing a pretty good job with that so far coming back in training."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodman has become an integral figure for club and country. At the 2024 Olympics, she was part of the esteemed "Triple Espresso" attack – along with Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson – that led the USWNT to a gold medal.

For the USWNT, Rodman has amassed 47 caps, scoring 11 goals and recording nine assists. In 2024, she made 26 appearances for the Spirit, scoring eight goals and recording six assists as she helped lead Washington to the NWSL championship game, where they fell just short against the Orlando Pride, 1-0.

"It's tough for me coming off such a good season and the Olympics and then going into an injury and now trying to find my place again and find my role and rhythm," she said during the USWNT's April camp. "I think having such an incline of momentum of going and going and going and then getting injured to where it's like 'Am I starting again?' Because you can't just get right back into it.

"It's been the mental battle of 'I can't be the Trinity I was at the Olympics' now coming back from injury, so I'm trying to play the role as best as I can and still be effective in a different way as I build back up into it."

  • WHAT RODMAN ADDED

The 23-year-old's contract with the Spirit concludes at the end of the NWSL season. Teams are now allowed to approach her with pre-contract agreements ahead of a potential departure from the club next season. Spirit CEO Kim Stone recently told media that team owner Michele Kang is in negotiations with Rodman's camp over a new deal.

Rodman added that it's a "weird situation" to be in while she's dealing with her return from injury. Ahead of the NWSL season, Rodman admitted that at one point in her career, she would like to play in Europe, and that it is "only a matter of time" before a move like that comes to fruition.

"This is the first time I've kind of been in a situation where it's like, 'What's happening?'" she said. "Dealing with this injury the whole time, like I barely played. So, it is a weird situation. I'm trying not to stress about it or put too much pressure on it, because at the end of the day, I'm worried about health first, and then everything else can come next."
