Vohra's schoolboy error

Plays of the day from the match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Mohali

Abhishek Purohit23-May-2014Sehwag’s start
Virender Sehwag flickers briefly these days but when he does, he is still a sight to watch. He lasted all of eight deliveries this match, but packed in plenty of entertainment in that short time. He was beaten twice in succession by Vikramjeet Malik’s away movement in the first over. He instantly made up for it. The fourth ball was lofted over mid-off for four, the fifth was slashed inches short of the third-man boundary, and the sixth was carved over backward point for four more.Vohra’s lapse
Manan Vohra was in serious touch once more, and had motored to 25 before he committed a schoolboy error. He clipped Rahul Tewatia through midwicket and turned back for what seemed a straightforward second run. It wasn’t to be, though. Vohra took it easy as he approached the crease and made no attempt to ground his bat. To his utter shock, Stuart Binny’s throw hit the stumps direct. Vohra, who was short by about a foot, walked off muttering.Tewatia’s misfortune
In the ninth over, Tewatia lured Shaun Marsh out with some flight. It was the googly, and Marsh realised that after it started to turn away from him. He was some way down the crease, and could have been easily stumped had he missed the ball. However, he managed to prod at it, and the outside edge went to slip on the bounce. The next ball was another googly. Marsh stayed back this time and guided it fine. Shane Watson at slip thought he had a chance again, but it bounced just in front of his outstretched left hand and raced to the boundary.Miller’s midwicket punch
Kings XI were looking for some big late runs after slowing down for a while. George Bailey hit James Faulkner for consecutive boundaries in the 19th over, and Miller weighed in with a fearsome blow. Faulkner bowled a high full-toss on the pads. Miller did not try to slog it. He punched it with a straight follow-through, and held the pose as the ball flew flat over deep midwicket for six. It was like a right-hander lofting the ball over extra cover.Dhawan’s double
Rishi Dhawan stunned Rajasthan Royals with two important blows in the ninth over of the chase. The first ball of the over was pitched up around off stump, and Ajinkya Rahane had a heave at it. The ball moved in a bit and hit the stumps. Dhawan angled the next one in on a good length to Shane Watson. The Royals captain came forward and tried to play with an angled bat, but it seamed in through the gate to rattle the stumps once more.

Man Utd believe they’ll sign £10m-a-year target even if they sack Ten Hag

The Manchester United hierarchy believes they can sign a £10 million-a-year international regardless of Erik ten Hag’s future, according to a new report.

It has been a disappointing and frustrating start to the season for the Red Devils, as poor performances and results have led to questions being asked about the long-term future of Ten Hag. A meeting in London was conducted on Tuesday, but as of now the Dutchman remains in charge at Old Trafford.

Man Utd now tracking 22 y/o Arsenal target as new competition for Onana

Man Utd have set their sights on a new goalkeeper for 2025.

1 ByBrett Worthington Oct 9, 2024 Latest Man Utd transfer news

A lot of the talk around United is obviously about Ten Hag’s future, but even though it is only October, there has been a bit of speculation about who the club could be looking to target in 2025.

United could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the New Year, or one that could at least provide competition for Andre Onana. A report has stated that the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on Sam Tickle of Wigan Athletic. Their recruitment team have made regular checks on the player, as they see the 22-year-old as someone who can provide cover and competition to Onana.

As well as scouting Tickle, United are keeping an eye on winger Jamie Leweling of Stuttgart. The 23-year-old has been impressive in the early parts of this season, with the Premier League side taking in Stuttgart’s recent game against Borussia Dortmund, which they won 5-1. Leweling is said to have impressed United during that game and could be a player they target to improve their wide options.

But the United chiefs are not stopping there, as they also believe they can sign an international defender to solve their left-back concerns.

Man Utd believe they can sign Ben Chilwell

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have made defender Ben Chilwell their top target as they look to strengthen their left-back options in January. The left-back is expected to leave Chelsea soon, with January being a strong possibility, as Enzo Maresca favours players such as Marc Cucurella, Renato Veiga, and Levi Colwill ahead of him.

The report states that teams from England and abroad are interested in signing the Englishman, who earns around £10 million a year. United continue to hold an interest in Chilwell after they looked at potentially signing him during the summer but opted against a move.

It goes on to add that United’s interest in Chilwell is regardless of what happens to Ten Hag, as they prepare to make an offer once the January transfer window comes around. The 27-year-old is considered to be at the top of their list for new left-backs, and they believe they can get their man due to his position in Maresca’s pecking order.

The concern for United would be that they are not the only teams interested in the defender, as La Liga giants Atlético Madrid are also keen, while Juventus are also interested, and the pair have made enquiries to see about his availability.

O’Neil could now bench Larsen and unleash Wolves’ "lightning" star

Wolverhampton Wanderers face yet another difficult task in the Premier League this weekend as they seek their first three points of the season.

Gary O’Neil’s men have been given a poor draw when it comes to fixtures, taking on Arsenal, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and now Liverpool in the opening six games.

If they can somehow come away from the clash against the Anfield side with a point or better, then the Old Gold can start to look forward in a more positive way.

O’Neil could make a few changes for the clash, with Jorgen Strand Larsen potentially dropping to the bench this weekend.

Jorgen Strand Larsen’s game in numbers vs Villa

The on-loan striker has scored just once for the Molineux side but was given the task of leading the line against Villa last weekend.

Despite taking the lead, Wolves suffered a 3-1 loss, but Larsen didn’t play too badly. During the match, he attempted two shots, won four of his six aerial duels and lost possession just twice – albeit while touching the ball on just 12 occasions.

All he needs now is to turn these performances into goals, then his confidence will soon begin to soar.

For the Liverpool clash, however, could O’Neil mix things up slightly and choose someone who has already found the back of the net for the club this term?

Goncalo Guedes has already netted three times since returning from a loan spell at Villarreal, although they have come in the EFL Cup.

Why Goncalo Guedes should be unleashed by O’Neil

The manager has unleashed the Portuguese gem in both cup games so far. Along with his three goals, he has also created a big chance, averaged 1.5 key passes per game and has taken four shots per match, underlining how impressive he has been in front of goal.

The £27m signing from Valencia in 2022 hasn’t exactly enjoyed the best of times in the Midlands, yet it looks as though O’Neil is set to give him a chance to showcase his talents this term.

Goncalo Guedes

Journalist Andy Brassell lavished praise on the player when he was signed, saying: “For Wolves I think Guedes will be absolutely fantastic, they need that little bit of extra bang up front, maybe they could be in a bit of trouble if they’re not scoring goals.

“He’s someone who can play as a striker or as a winger, lightning quick, on his day as good as it gets.”

The key for Guedes now is to ensure he delivers decent performances in the Premier League when called upon.

His display against Brighton in the cup could well see him secure a start against Liverpool, but he will need to back this up.

Wolves aren’t quite in trouble, yet. But they will need to pick up points soon, otherwise O’Neil could come under some pressure.

Their fixtures have been tough, no doubt about it, but this is a team that beat Chelsea twice and Manchester City last term. The next few weeks could be interesting indeed.

Ollie Robinson's lack of appetite raises more doubts about Test recall

Fast bowler limited to seven overs, including four of spin, as Leicestershire ease to draw

David Hopps15-May-2022Leicestershire 210 and 333 for 9 (Patel 68, Swindells 57, Azad 54, Lenham 4-84) drew with Sussex 450 (Clark, 138, Carter 72, Haines 50)Around the time that Matthew Potts was summoning another irresistible fast-bowling performance that seems bound to catapult him into an England Test squad for the first time, Ollie Robinson was bowling off-spin for Sussex. One looked hungry for an England debut, one looked as if his England career was in abeyance. Robinson bowled only seven overs in the day, three of seam, four of spin. He would have been better with a literal lack of hunger before the match – the after-effects of his food poisoning on the eve of the game, according to Sussex’s head coach, Ian Salisbury, remained debilitating.”Ollie wasn’t himself all match after the food poisoning,” he said. “He just couldn’t perform. The sickness affected him massively, he had two drips on the first day.”In theory, Robinson could bowl out the New Zealanders at Hove next week and go to Lord’s with his form and reputation restored, but the squad is expected to be chosen before that game with a series of gatherings and fitness assessments in mind. To name Robinson in the squad – and also to allow him to have a go at the tourists to prove his worthiness – would be a considerable show of faith. In some ways, England’s decision will reflect their view of county cricket because Robinson is the archetypal county cricketer in an age when generally they are looking for nothing of the sort.As a county-style bowler, a player hardly in vogue, his returns over four seasons were exceptional. He had learned to seek out seam or swing depending on conditions. And he had an excellent record with the old ball as well as the new. He forced his selection through performance. He had four hot years; Potts has had four hot weeks.Thirty-one Test wickets at 21.28 in his maiden summer of 2021 suggested he had made the transition, but even with such an outstanding record, his suitability for international cricket remains under question. There were the dubious social media posts, the undercurrent of unreliability. But he was indisputably one of England’s premier seam bowlers and as such he was awarded his first central contract in October.Perhaps he is not the sort to be embraced by the system. Not everybody is. His stamina and fitness levels for Test cricket were brought into question by England’s bowling coach, Jon Lewis, in January, before he broke down before the start of a Test series in the West Indies that represented his chance to claim a regular spot. Then came the recent Championship match at Worcester where England blocked his inclusion on fitness grounds and he pleaded a tooth infection. In Leicester, thanks to food as yet unknown, he has failed to make his case. In only his second Championship appearance of the season, he bowled only one over on the first day because of his stomach upset. Whilst not knowing his true medical state by the final day (and it should not be airily dismissed) he would have been better being sick with exhaustion on the pitch. He still had questions to answer and he flunked the examination. He bowled three overs with the second new ball, taking a wicket with a loosener as Ben Mike checked a drive to extra cover, where Cheteshwar Pujara held a fine diving catch, and was then withdrawn from the attack. He reappeared with the second new ball still only 12 overs old to bowl four overs of inconsequential offspin. Then no more. Barring, presumably, a bit of nausea and a lie down.It should be conceded that he is a respectable offspinner. As a youngster, he was a batter who bowled spin, he has bowled it at times for Sussex with some success and he sent down three overs in this guise in sunglasses during the Adelaide Test in December. But on the day that Sussex needed a matchwinner and England needed a signal, circumstance dictated that he could provide neither. An increasingly pedestrian fourth-day surface at Leicester offered slow turn and was ultimately so dispiriting for all the bowlers that Leicestershire, still 45 runs behind at the start of the final day with only five wickets left, survived at 333 for 9 with a lead of 93, with Harry Swindells and Callum Parkinson stubbornly repelling 46 overs in an eight-wicket stand of 111.The result leaves both counties without a win at the foot of the Second Division, but it will be Sussex who will be deflated after seemingly being destined to claim their first Championship victory since April last year only for 27 overs lost to afternoon showers to cost them dear. Even when Delray Rawlins prised out both Swindells and Parkinson in rapid succession, Swindells’ 57 from 178 balls coming to grief at short extra, Parkinson (45 from 176) bowled by a quicker one, there was no Robinson to be seen. But if not Robinson then whom? The minute that England’s revamped trio of Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes begin to discuss their fast-bowling stocks, their sense of optimism will come under serious challenge.Of the 11 specialist quicks to play in a Test in the last two years, only five featured in this round of the Championship. Of those, the old stagers, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, were as resilient as ever and are certain selections after being excluded from an experimental West Indies tour party. Craig Overton had a knee-injury scare before returning to duties in Somerset’s win in Bristol, but Robinson must now be a major doubt. Some of the absentees might yet make a surprise inclusion in the England squad. Chris Woakes remains afflicted by shoulder and knee trouble; Olly Stone and Sam Curran are recovering from stress fractures of the back (Curran bowled two overs of spin himself at Beckenham); and Jofra Archer and Mark Wood will attempt returns from elbow operations at some point this summer in white-ball cricket. Two absentees from the Roses match, however, cannot be entirely ruled out. Lancashire’s Saqib Mahmood has a stiff back and little cricket behind him, but there is no diagnosis about a serious injury. The same can be said of Matt Fisher, whose briefly successful start to the season at Yorkshire quickly gave way to fears about a “hot spot” in his back and estimates of a precautionary four-week lay-off that has now elapsed. their fitness remains unknown. Tom Helm, of Middlesex, has long been monitored, and has 14 wickets at 12.28 but he again is far from fit.Fast-bowler injuries are not just afflicting England wannabees. Don Topley, the former Essex seamer, and commentator, calculated that around 30 quick bowlers were absent for the start of the season. Since then, the counties have undertaken six matches apiece in a relentless opening phase of seven matches in as many weeks. Demanding pitches, and high scores have made them the equivalent of seven back-to-back Tests. The Dukes balls are said to be not swinging as much and are prone to going soft and out of shape. Perhaps fast bowlers are breaking down just by thinking about it.

Bidding war begins for second day-night Ashes Test

There has been a flurry of public lobbying from state leaders regarding the fifth men’s Ashes Test, with Tasmania facing stiff competition in its bid for hosting rights.Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday the showpiece series finale, slated to start January 14, would not take place in Perth because of border restrictions.Every rival state has since thrown its hat in the ring for what will be a pink-ball Test, ensuring broadcasters aren’t denied the prime-time fodder they would otherwise have access to. ACT chief minister Andrew Barr has also put forward a case for Manuka Oval.CA, weighing up several factors, is expected to land on its replacement venue within a week. The obvious temptation is to bank the biggest cheque on offer, believed to be the MCG unless Tasmania premier Peter Gutwein or a rival leader tips in millions of dollars to bridge the gap.Yet the decision will be more complex than just money, coming two months after CA’s state-association shareholders forced the resignation of chair Earl Eddings. The governing body will be desperate to be as collaborative as possible, while also pleasing broadcasters and players, but finding the middle of that Venn diagram will be incredibly tricky.Logistics will form a major part of the decision, with accommodation for the series’ travelling circus to be a key challenge in Melbourne given the Test overlaps with the Australian Open.Tasmania premier Peter Gutwein urged CA to do the “right thing by the game” and lock in Hobart for its first ever Ashes Test, rather than staging two legs of the series at another ground.”We are currently finalising our proposal to Cricket Australia, which we will submit within the next 24 hours,” Gutwein said. “We are very confident we can more than meet all of their requirements to host the fifth Test in Hobart.”Hobart has only been allocated 13 Tests in the 32 years since hosting our first Test. CA should not be seduced by the larger states, they should act in the best interests of the country, make history.”Similar sound bites came from around the country on Tuesday.”Why not have it at the best cricket oval in the world?” South Australia premier Steven Marshall spruiked.Marshall may have some support in the Australian dressing room. Captain Pat Cummins didn’t offer an opinion on where the final Test should be, but noted Adelaide Oval has “really nailed” what constitutes the best possible pitch for day-night Tests.”At times in Sheffield Shield cricket [at other grounds], if the wicket is not quite right then you can see some long, slow pink-ball matches,” Cummins told reporters in Brisbane. “If it’s a pink-ball match and they get the wicket right, no stress from us [wherever it is played]. If it’s Sydney great, I can stay home, but I’m not too bothered.”

Approach made: West Ham want "complete midfielder" who plays like Odegaard

Julen Lopetegui has been backed. West Ham United parted ways with David Moyes at the end of the 2023/24 season after his dynasty entered a solemn twilight stage, and now there is fresh hope that success can be found once again.

Two years on from winning the Conference League, West Ham will not play European football for the first time in three seasons, but this at least gives the new era a singular focus on the domestic front.

Tomas Soucek Lucas Paqueta Antonio Coufal West Ham-1

The Premier League side have employed a free-spending approach this summer, with technical director strengthening across the park, and while improvements have been made, there may yet be another incoming as the window enters the final fortnight…

West Ham eyeing another midfielder

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham have enquired about the availability of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler as Steidten gears up for a ninth (yes, ninth) signing of the summer.

PSG midfielder Carlos Soler

The experienced Guido Rodriguez has been landed to add some mettle to the engine room but Soler would bring a more dynamic outlook.

The Spaniard is valued at around €20m (£17m) by the Ligue 1 champions, and while the Irons' spending has hit the £120m mark this summer, this could ice the cake nicely indeed.

What Carlos Soler would bring to West Ham

Soler is a technical footballer with a sharp eye for a pass. His innate understanding of tempo allows him to maximise this ball-playing ability and influence attacking sequences effectively.

He signed for PSG from Valencia for €20m (£17m) in 2022, and while he's now completed 63 appearances – scoring eight goals and assisting eight more – he's struggled to secure a starring role in the talent-congested team and would do well to move to an outfit that could see him perform as one of the standouts.

West Ham could offer such a platform. At 27 years old, Soler is in his ostensible prime and must now make good on praise that he is the "complete midfielder", as said by one-time Valencia player Curro Torres, and showcases his skills in the Premier League.

PSG player Carlos Soler

He has the ability. FBref's player comparison model even marks Arsenal's Martin Odegaard as one of his most similar players across Europe's top five leagues – and we all know how well the Norwegian maestro has done on English soil.

Arsenal have fallen a whisker short against Manchester City in the past two top-flight title challenges, though Mikel Arteta deserves all the plaudits after transforming the Gunners into one of the continent's elite outfits. Odegaard has been the fulcrum of such success.

Across the past two years, the all-seeing playmaker has posted 26 goals and 18 assists, awarded the club's Player of the Season for 2023/24 after a magnificent season of the highest influence.

Indeed, as per FBref, he ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 3% for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, the top 2% for progressive passes and the top 14% for progressive carries per 90.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

Odegaard is clearly operating at a higher level than Soler, but the PSG man's ability to score and assist with equal consistency speaks of his dynamic attacking skill. Moreover, he's a progressive passer and that is something that could see him emulate Arsenal's superstar.
