THE BIGGER PICTURE
El Farolito has won the hearts of American soccer fans across the country as they continue to find upsets every season in the U.S. Open Cup. The San Francisco-based team joins other amateur clubs like Virginia Dream FC and Little Rock Rangers in pulling off upsets against professional opposition this year. Not only that, this is not El Farolito’s first run at the US Open Cup as they won the tournament in 1993 under their previous name Club Deportivo (CD) Mexico.
WHAT’S NEXT?
El Farolito will now advance to the third round of the US Open Cup, where they could potentially face higher-division professional teams, including MLS sides. However, the second round is not yet over, and draws will be revealed following its conclusion.
Aston Villa are now keen on signing a £25m striker this January, with Unai Emery planning up to three signings, according to a report.
Mixed first half of the season at Villa Park
Villa fans will have mixed emotions about their side’s first half of the campaign, given that they are in a strong position to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, but are struggling to reach the heights of last season in the Premier League.
The Villans remain within touching distance of the top four, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, so there is still time to turn things around, but Emery may feel some new additions are needed in the January transfer window.
One potential option for Emery this winter is Paris Saint-Germain’s Milan Skriniar, with a price tag of €35m (£29m) being set by the French club, making the 29-year-old a relatively affordable option if Emery wants to pursue a defender.
However, the manager appears to be more keen on strengthening his attacking options, with Villa in the race for a number of forwards, including Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui and teammate Charles De Ketelaere, who operates in attacking midfield.
Now, another option has also entered the frame, with The Daily Mail reporting that Aston Villa have reignited their interest in Borussia Dortmund Donyell Malen ahead of the January transfer window.
The Villans are said to be keen on signing Malen, who can operate across the front line, with Emery keen to add depth to his squad as we enter the second half of the season.
Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen celebrates
Dortmund are said to value the Dutchman at around £25m, as he now enters the final 18 months of his contract with the Bundesliga club.
The report also states that Emery is planning up to three signings in the January transfer window, so there could be a number of new faces through the door over the next few weeks.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 28, 2024 Malen is a versatile option for Emery
The 25-year-old is capable of playing on both wings and through the middle, making him a versatile option for Emery, should he complete a move to Villa Park this winter.
Ever since breaking into the PSV Eindhoven team, the Netherlands international has shown a keen eye for finding the back of the net, as displayed by his goal record in the league.

Lauded as “unstoppable” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the former PSV Eindhoven man ranks in the 99th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, highlighting his ability in front of goal.
Villa are not short on top strikers, with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran performing well this season, but Malen’s versatility and eye for goal could make him a great option for Emery, as he looks to get his side back on track in the second half of the campaign.
Chelsea spent €238.50m (£197.2m) in the 2024/25 summer transfer window, bringing ten new players to the club on permanent deals, and one player on an initial loan deal (Jadon Sancho). The investment was made in positions all over the pitch, signing two goalkeepers, four defenders, one midfielder, three attackers/wingers, and one centre-forward.
However, the one centre-forward signed was Marc Guiu, who joined from Barcelona for a fee of around £5m. The 18-year-old striker was bought as a future investment, and the Blues were looking at other strikers alongside him during the summer window, to join and compete with Nicolas Jackson upfront.
Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Jhon Duran, Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres in the recent past, but they could now dip into the January transfer market, and acquire their very own answer to Gyokeres, with this 18-year-old striker sensation.
Chelsea's search for a striker
According to reports from Patrick Berger (Sky Sports Germany), Chelsea are interested in signing FC Nurnberg striker, Stefanos Tzimas, who is also subject to interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle.
The report states the 18-year-old striker would likely cost around £18-19m. The Greek forward has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season for FC Nurnberg, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 922 minutes played.
Talent scout Jacek Kulig labelled Tzimas a “natural-born killer” and a “true monster”, showing elite levels of clinical finishing since playing at professional level.
Equally, data analyst Ben Mattinson stated Sporting should be going after Tzimas as their “Gyokeres replacement”, showcasing the worthy rival the teenager could be to Jackson at Stamford Bridge.
Jackson vs Tzimas comparison
Jackson has made 16 appearances for the Blues this season, scoring nine goals, providing three assists and totalling 1,221 minutes played. The 23-year-old striker has become integral under Enzo Maresca, for both his in and out of possession qualities.
However, Chelsea are clearly looking for an alternative profile, in order to equip Maresca with the necessary tools to switch up in games, and apply all the tactical tweaks he wants in order to give his side the best possible chance of winning.

Tzimas is just 18 years old and already stands at 6 foot, with a stocky upper body frame. His ability to use his strength to bully defenders, gain touches in the opposition penalty area (7.55 per 90) and pin central defenders is something the Blues are looking for.
He is also believed to be still growing and developing, and is seen as a player with untapped aerial potential, despite only winning 0.43 aerial duels per 90.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
What makes Jackson so important to this Chelsea side, is his ability to drop deep and link play, and by acquiring Tzimas, you gain a unique profile, who offers that physical frame and robust nature, whilst also having the quality to join in build-up, as demonstrated with his progressive passing and carrying metrics.
That no doubt mirrors the aforementioned Gyokeres – who averages 1.81 progressive passes and 4.20 progressive carries this season – with the prolific Swede also a towering presence at 6 foot 2, while boasting the clinical nature to match, after netting 61 goals in 2024 to date.
If the Blues were to sign Tzimas, Jackson would retain his number nine position which his performances have earned, whilst providing a new profile for the squad, one that is needed, and someone to compete with and push Jackson, challenging for minutes.

Aston Villa have taken the lead in the race to sign a young international goalkeeper, according to a recent report. The Villans’ run of three straight wins ended on Saturday night, as they were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest. Unai Emery will be hoping this is just a bump in the road as his side prepare to face Manchester City at the weekend.
Aston Villa keen on signing 21 y/o Real Madrid gem seen as ideal for Emery

ByCharlie Smith Dec 15, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news
The inconsistent form for Villa this season will have alerted Emery to areas in his team that need addressing. Indeed, the Premier League side have already been linked with plenty of new faces ahead of next month’s transfer window.
Villa have made contact with the representatives of defender Antonio Silva, so they can get an understanding of the costs of a possible transfer. The Benfica centre-back is admired a lot by the Midlands side but they are not alone, as other Premier League teams, as well as big European sides, are also keen on signing the talented defender. The president of Benfica is reportedly set to meet with Silva’s agents ahead of the January transfer window.
As well as looking at Silva, Villa are also in signing Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, but again face competition from their Premier League rivals. The young man has impressed in his limited appearances for the Spanish giants, and Emery sees him as someone who could improve his side’s defence, given where he has been playing his football.
Aston Villa lead transfer race to sign youngster after impressing scouts
According to Birmingham Live, Aston Villa have taken the lead in the race to sign Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday. The 19-year-old came through the academy at Manchester City, but he left the Premier League side and joined the Owls in 2020.
Charles has worked his way through the club’s under-18s and under-21s, and he is now a part of the first team picture. The goalkeeper has yet to appear in the Championship, but he has been on the bench for every league game this season apart from two.
Despite him not being Wednesday’s regular keeper, Charles has been capped four times by his country, Northern Ireland. It is on the international stage where Charles has left scouts impressed, with them coming away from recent Nations League games giving the player “glowing reports”.

The young man’s ability to play out from the back has meant top clubs from the Premier League have identified him as a top target, and that includes Villa. The Villans are willing to move second-choice keeper Robin Olsen on in favour of bringing in emerging talent should the opportunity arise. Villa can offer Charles a number two slot in their squad, and he may see this as his chance to move into the Premier League.
A member of the Chelsea squad could be on his way out as soon as January in the face of a mammoth offer from a European giant, it has been claimed in a fresh report
Chelsea flying high in the Premier League
A 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge moved Chelsea up to third place in the Premier League, behind second placed Arsenal only by alphabetical order, and nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
Enzo Maresca has enjoyed a fine start to life in west London, with his side also impressing in the Conference League, though they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle.

It has not been plain sailing for everyone at the club though, with Ben Chilwell still sidelined by Maresca and the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among those only handed limited opportunities to impress in the Premier League.
Now, Chelsea have been handed an opportunity to reduce their bloated squad, and net a hefty fee in the process.
Bid made for Chelsea's top goalscorer
That comes as a fresh report has revealed that several bids have already been made for top goalscorer Christopher Nkunku, who has struggled to break into the Premier League first XI but has proved prolific in Europe.

Speaking in a recent interview, Maresca was quizzed on Nkunku and admitted that he loved the Frenchman, but did little to suggest he would play a bigger role at the club any time soon.
“We know that Christo’s [Nkunku’s] best position is between the lines as a 10, but Cole [Palmer] is playing there, and we are not going to play many games with Cole and Christo, or with Cole and Joao [Felix].
‘”Christo is the same as I have mentioned many times about Joao. If you play with Cole, Joao, Christo, Noni [Madueke] and Jadon [Sancho], who is defending? Their skill and their strength is not defending, it is to attack. We love them but also we need balance.
Christopher Nkunku for Chelsea
“They are all fantastic players, they are all going to play games no doubt, but not every game. The last game we tried with Joao and Cole together, hopefully soon we can try with Christo and Cole together, Christo and Joao together, because we have so many games.”
With his future at Stamford Bridge looking bleak barring an injury to Palmer, it is little surprise that there has been speculation he could exit the club in the near future. Now, reports in Spain have gone one step further, explaining that several clubs have already made a bid to land the Frenchman. Top of that list is Paris Saint Germain, who have reportedly tabled a €60m (£51m) offer for the forward, which would see Chelsea almost break even on the fee they shelled out to sign Nkunku from RB Leipzig.
It is also added that “several Saudi Arabian clubs have offered 60 million euros to sign the attacker”, though those offers may well be less attractive than the option to return to Paris and his homeland.
Nkunku still has almost five years left to run on his £195,000 a week deal at Stamford Bridge, but it is hard to see him seeing out his contract unless his gametime improves given his clear ability and desire to play regular football. Could this be the perfect solution to a brewing problem?

Potentially repeating their deal to sign Dominic Solanke a few months ago, Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly ready to pay £50m to sign one Premier League winger.
Tottenham transfer news
The Lilywhites returned to winning ways in style against West Ham United, putting their disappointing capitulation against Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break behind them. Despite falling a goal behind courtesy of Mohammed Kudus’ second goal in as many games, Ange Postecoglou’s side battled back well to eventually ease past their London rivals and seal a comfortable 4-1 victory.
As if Spurs need any further attacking reinforcements after such a display of goalscoring prowess, those in North London have been linked with summer moves to add even more excitement to their frontline.
The likes of Jonathan David and Benfica winger Kerem Akturkoglu. The former could of course partner Solanke to form quite the duo under Postecoglou, particularly if the Lilywhites also add another creative outlet when 2025 arrives.
According to reports in Spain, Levy and Tottenham are now willing to pay as much as £50m to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth with Spurs reportedly preparing an opening offer to sign the winger.
Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth.
Of course, Bournemouth and Spurs should already be familiar with each other in the transfer market given that Solanke swapped the South Coast for North London just a few months ago. Now, the two clubs could renew their relationship in what could see yet another Bournemouth player become part of Postecoglou’s ongoing project.

Semenyo certainly seems to be one to watch. The winger first stole the headlines amid links to the likes of Spurs earlier this month and those rumours have only increased ever since to the point that the Lilywhites are seemingly set to step things up.
"Underrated" Semenyo could unleash Solanke
Although Solanke has shown enough glimpses of his best form to say that the goals will begin to flow in abundance sooner rather than later, the arrival of a winger he knows so well in the form of Semenyo would undoubtedly speed that process up.
Forming a solid partnership at Bournemouth last season, Solanke ended the campaign with 21 goals in all competitions, whilst Semenyo ended on eight as both earned praise around the Premier League. Analyst Ben Mattinson, one of those full of praise, spoke about the Cherries’ dangermen in the last campaign and went on to describe Semenyo as “underrated”.
Kicking on even further in the current campaign, Semenyo is now in line to follow in his former teammates’ footsteps and potentially complete a move to Spurs when 2025 arrives.

Everton are considering the idea of preparing a £16.5m offer for a “fantastic” attacking player with a big future in the game, according to a fresh transfer update.
Everton transfer news
The Blues find themselves in more buoyant spirits after a dreadful start to the new Premier League, with Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Ipswich Town another big step in the right direction, meaning that seven points have been acquired from their last three games.
New signings reportedly continue to be looked at by Everton, with AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueuze linked with a move to Goodison Park. A switch in the January transfer window has been mooted, as Sean Dyche looks to add more attacking quality to his squad.
Fluminense forward Kaua Elias has also been mentioned as a potential addition for the Merseysiders, with Dan Friedkin looking to beat Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to his services.
Another young attacking player, Santiago Castro, has also been backed to seal a move to Everton in the near future, with the 20-year-old currently plying his trade at Bologna. He has three goals in seven Serie A starts this season, and he has also been capped by Argentina at Under-16, Under-20 and Under-23 level.
Everton considering offer for "fantastic" ace
According to a new report from Kontra Spor [via Sport Witness], Everton are weighing up tabling a £16.5m offer for Besiktas forward Semih Kilicsoy.
The Blues are looking to convince the Turkish club’s president, Hasan Arat, that sanctioning a move for the 19-year-old is the right decision for all parties.
Given the aforementioned transfer rumours mentioned, it does look as though The Friedkin Group are making a concerted effort to bring in a new young forward, looking at the long-term picture instead of simply panic buying and bringing in quick fixes.
In Kilicsoy, the Blues could be signing a superb talent if they get a deal over the line, with the Turkish teenager already making such an impact in his senior career, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists in 50 appearances for Besikas. He has also been described as “fantastic” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who has backed him to enjoy an “exciting future” in football.
A transfer fee of £16.5m is so cheap in the modern game, given some of the bloated amounts of money that many clubs spend on players, so Everton should consider Kilicsoy as an absolute steal if the price lands around that figure.
Friedkin Group plotting move to sign £12m attacker for Everton in January
They are looking to bolster their attacking ranks midseason.
ByBen Browning Oct 20, 2024
Blues supporters would have to accept that the teenager would arrive as a work in progress, rather than someone who fans should expect to excel consistently from the off, but he has the talent to become a huge player on Merseyside over time.
da bet7: They might only be nine Premier League games in, but this season has been brutal for Arsenal.
da prosport bet: Mikel Arteta’s side came into the campaign as Manchester City’s biggest title rivals, and while that is probably still true, injuries and suspensions are starting to take their toll.
For example, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber had to come off in the second half against Liverpool last night, and while the latter may have been suffering from a cramp, the former certainly looked hurt.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as Arteta has a plethora of incredibly talented youngsters at his disposal, and for Wednesday night’s game against Preston North End, he should hand one of them a first competitive start, alongside the more well-known Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Why Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri should start
Okay, so before we get to why the lesser-known prospect should start on Wednesday, let’s take a look at why his fellow academy stars should play as well, beginning with Nwaneri.
Of all the Gunners’ promising youngsters, the 17-year-old midfielder probably receives the most coverage from fans and pundits alike, and for good reason, as when he’s played for the first team this season, he has impressed, and Martin Odegaard’s absence has left a hole in the team he could fill.
For example, while he might not be as technically astute as Leandro Trossard at present, the Enfield-born dynamo has shown that he can add some much-needed directness and energy to the team’s midfield when he comes off the bench, as he did against Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.
Moreover, in his only start of the campaign, against Bolton Wanderers, the 5 foot 9 prodigy scored a brace and generally looked like the best player on the pitch, so with the club captain still out and the level of opposition being what it is, he must start against Preston.
Likewise, Lewis-Skelly, who also started and starred in that game, will likely start on Wednesday, as he’s seemingly become Arteta’s go-to substitute for the starting left-back in recent weeks, ahead of both Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko, and it’s easy to see why.
The Islington-born gem is brilliant on the ball, as demonstrated by the defence-splitting pass he played against Bolton and the numerous passes he played against Liverpool; he’s reasonably secure and, perhaps most importantly, has shown a maturity far beyond his years, coming on in crunch moments against Manchester City last month, the Reds on Sunday and playing 18 minutes in the Champions League last week.
Lastly, if Timber did pick up a slight knock at the Emirates, it would be mad to play him in the League Cup, so there is a perfect opportunity to hand the Hale End ace another start.
However, as Arsenal fans will be all too aware, Gabriel is also likely to be unfit for Wednesday at the very least, and while it’s yet another gut punch for the title-chasing team, his absence presents another opportunity for a lesser-known youngster to pick up his first competitive start for the club.
Why Ayden Heaven should start
Yes, the academy gem in question is 18-year-old Ayden Heaven, who may be known to Arsenal fans but remains a relative unknown to the broader footballing community – at least for now, anyway.
Now, the first thing to say is that, unlike the two young stars mentioned above, the 6 foot 2 ace has yet to make a competitive appearance for the first team and will therefore be making a big step-up if he does start on Wednesday, but Arteta will never know if he’s ready to make the jump unless he gives him the chance.
Fortunately, it would appear that the manager rates the young “beast”, as dubbed by podcaster WIll Balsam, as he gave him plenty of game time during the club’s pre-season tour against some big teams like Manchester United and Liverpool. On top of that, the Spaniard also named the promising gem on the bench for the North London derby and the game against Bolton earlier this season.

However, away from first-team action, the young Englishman has also impressed for the U21 side, where he’s made 23 appearances, playing mainly as a centre-back but also making appearances at left-back in left midfield, where he has been able to show off his “insane” passing range, as Balsam described it.
Ultimately, it’s a lot to ask of Heaven to make his first start for the club on Wednesday, but with Gabriel likely out of action for some time and the opposition being what it is, he could really help Arteta navigate the current injury crisis, and who knows, if he plays well enough, he could find himself making more first team appearances in the coming months, alongside Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly.
