Enigmatic Portuguese coach Mourinho finds himself at the centre of another controversy in Turkey having only recently returned to the dugout after serving a touchline ban. He has spoken out against Super Lig match officials on a regular basis.

After taking in another heated derby date with old adversaries Gala, Mourinho was seen tangling with his opposite managerial number. He grabbed at the face of Okan Buruk, leading to the Galatasaray boss writhing on the floor.

DID YOU KNOW?

Further disciplinary action could be on the cards for Mourinho, but Fener have made a point of addressing actions that they believe should never have happened and were ultimately blown out of proportion.

Getty Images SportWHAT FENERBAHCE SAID

A statement from the Istanbul-based giants reads: "This is our statement regarding Okan Buruk, who approached our Technical Director Jose Mourinho, who was meeting with the referees after the match yesterday, under the pretext of shaking their hands, provoked our Technical Director with hand gestures and statements, and had the audacity to make disrespectful hand gestures after crossing the police line.

"After our Technical Director momentarily touched his nose in response to these provocations, the person in question threw himself on the ground in an exaggerated manner.

"The disrespectful words and actions of this person, who professionally threw himself to the ground as if he had been shot as a continuation of his planned and excessive provocations, are recorded with images. The meaninglessness and the acting of a person who jumps to the ground and writhes for seconds when his nose is touched is known to the entire public.

"It is obvious that the images of this person throwing himself to the ground from his football career continued in his career as a coach, and that this attitude is a characteristic stance. It is clear that the evaluation of the ugly provocations and what happened afterwards should not be one-sided, but should be based on a cause-and-effect relationship."

Fazer as coisas bem e ajudar a equipe.

Pat Cummins expects 'traditional' SCG pitch to be similar to Indian conditions

Australia’s captain says “2023 is going to be a big year,” with a Test tour of India following the final match against South Africa

Andrew McGlashan03-Jan-2023Pat Cummins expects there to be a “huge connection” between the conditions for the Sydney Test against South Africa and what Australia will face on the upcoming tour of India, with their focus on the present but also the challenges ahead.Through a combination of factors, Australia have some tricky decisions to make over the balance of their side for the SCG. Allrounder Cameron Green, who provides a natural balance, is injured for a match which is pushing selectors hard to include Ashton Agar as a second spinner, but reverse swing is also likely to be a factor. They are similar conversations that will need to be had during the four-Test tour of India which begins in early February and where Australia are aiming to win for the first time since 2004.Related

  • Hazlewood on injury layoff: 'It just happens to be at the wrong time of the year'

  • Agar, Renshaw, Morris: Australia's Sydney balancing act

“It’s a huge connection to India,” Cummins said, while not revealing the final XI for the SCG Test. “Fast bowling and reverse swing is going to come into it, which we can expect in India. Probably get more spin overs here, our batters are probably going to face more spin here as well. So it’s a really good connection.”Even personally captaining here might be a little different to the last few Test matches. So it’s a really good prep. Whatever you do there’s going to be strong connection to India, which is nice. It’s not by purpose, it’s just worked out that way.”If Agar does play, having last appeared in the format in 2017, it will be the first time since 2016-17 that Australia have included two frontline spinners for a home Test. He can expect to be part of the squad for the India tour alongside Nathan Lyon which will also include more spinners, potentially Mitchell Swepson and the uncapped Todd Murphy. There has been an effort to return SCG pitches to something more akin to what they were traditionally known for, where spin would play a major part, although this year the nature of the surface – which was last used for Shane Warne’s final Test in 2006-07 – has also been determined by the weather and volume of cricket played. In the one Sheffield Shield match played on the ground this season, 23 of the 40 wickets fell to spin.”We’re hoping for a traditional SCG pitch,” curator Adam Lewis said. “It’s not quite what we’ve seen in the past few years. A few of the players have told me it looks like a wicket from about 10 years ago, which gave me a bit of confidence. It’s thin on grass, a bit patchy and probably not the best-looking pitch that we’ve seen, but we’re looking forward to it and we’ve done the best we can.”The combination of conditions and injuries has provided Australia with a chance to explore various options within their squad at the beginning of a year that includes 11 Tests – if they make the Test Championship final – between now and the conclusion of the Ashes in late July.”In T20s and one-dayers think [opportunities] happen organically, Test cricket it’s a bit harder,” Cummins said. “Don’t wish [injuries] upon anyone but…we speak a lot about having a squad of 15 plus players to get through a really busy 12-month schedule. It’s not going to take 11, it will take 15 or 16 and if that means one or two guys get their opportunity they may not have got before heading over to a place like India in that hot furnace it’s only a good thing.”However, having narrowly missed out on the first Test Championship final because of docked points for over-rate – and also slipping up at crucial moments in the previous cycle – there has been a laser focus to ensure there is no repeat.”That was always going to be a big goal,” Cummins said. “I think we’ve been playing fantastically, we’ve put ourselves in that position to earn that spot early which is a huge driver for us.”On the verge of a summer clean sweep against what has been largely underwhelming opponents in West Indies and South Africa, the next seven months will likely define how this Australian Test team is remembered. If they complete a hat-trick of winning in India (which will be a monumental task) taking the Test Championship title, and securing an Ashes in England, Cummins’ side will need to be ranked very highly.”We’ve got a huge year ahead,” he said. “I think even in these three weeks it might be a good time to pause and think about what a great 12 months it’s been for this team. Pakistan and Sri Lanka were two really good subcontinent tours with a third one in India to come. 2023 is going to be a big year.”

Ange can silence Osimhen by unleashing "world-class" Spurs star

It’s been an interesting season for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have played some of the most entertaining football in the Premier League this season and have picked up some big wins along the way, like the ones against Manchester United and Aston Villa, but slip-ups against the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace see them remain out of the top four at present.

However, where the North Londoners have been inconsistent in the league, they have been exemplary and remain undefeated in both the League Cup and Europa League.

In fact, the Lilywhites are second out of 36 teams in the latter, and with that, they can afford to rest a few players for the game against Galatasaray tonight, especially as one of the stars Postecoglou should start is more than good enough to help shut down Victor Osimhen.

Why Postecoglou should rest starters

Okay, there is certainly an argument to be made that, given the strength of Galatasaray and the intimidation factor their stadium can provide, Postecoglou should be looking to start his absolute strongest lineup tonight.

However, there are a couple of reasons why this might not be necessary or the best idea, with the first being quite obvious: injuries.

The club’s campaign was utterly derailed by a rash of unfortunate injuries around this time last year, and given how injury-prone the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, and Rodrigo Bentancur seem to be, it feels unwise to risk them tonight, especially when there is a potential banana skin waiting for the team on Saturday in the guise of Ipswich Town.

Micky van de Ven withdrawn due to injury

The second reason is that tonight’s game is the perfect opportunity to hand out more game time to those who might not start every week and to put them into what could be the most hostile environment of the season to test their mettle.

Moreover, as we saw against Manchester City and in the game against Aston Villa, the players outside of Postecoglou’s first-choice XI are good enough to make a difference in challenging games, and there is one player in particular who deserves to start, someone who could play a significant role in keeping Victor Osimhen quiet.

The Spurs ace who deserves to start against Galatasaray

As we said, several players deserve to start in Turkey tonight, but in this case, we are talking about Yves Bissouma in particular.

The Mali international has made ten appearances for Postecoglou this season, but in the last two games, he started on the bench, with Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr the manager’s preferred midfielders to play alongside the incredible Dejan Kulusevski.

Yet, in both games, he came off the bench to play a significant role in two outstanding wins.

Against City, he played the entire second half and was a constant nuisance for the Champions’ attackers, earning himself a 9/10 match rating from LondonWorld’s Rahman Osman for his tireless defensive work and sensational goal-line clearance to deny Nico O’Reilly from grabbing an equaliser.

The “world-class” defensive midfielder, as dubbed by Sky Sports presenter Adam Smith, didn’t do anything quite as eye-catching in his 34 minutes of action against Villa, but was once again a constant throne in the opposition’s side.

He won 100% of his ground duels, made two clearances, one interception, one tackle, lost the ball just twice, maintained a passing accuracy of 100% and took 29 touches.

He was so effective that despite his relatively short time on the pitch, the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded him an 8/10 on the night, writing that he ‘impressed again off the bench, snapping into tackles and helping Spurs to win the midfield battle in the second half.’

So, with back-to-back brilliant displays off the bench against two of the best teams in England, it would be fair to say the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has more than earned a chance to start tonight’s Europa League clash.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Ultimately, if he can keep the likes of Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, Bernardo Silva and Savinnho quiet in the space of a week, he should be able to handle Osimhen, who’s not been playing top opposition week in and week out this season.

Chelsea need Cole Palmer more than ever – Blues' out-of-sorts talisman must step up to get them out of a rut

A tough period for the 22-year-old has coincided with the club's overall dip in form, and Enzo Maresca needs him back to his best as soon as possible

It's little surprise that Chelsea's alarming downturn in form has coincided with their talisman looking a little off colour. Ever-consistent Cole Palmer has gone through a rare, long-overdue rough spell of late, exposing just how important he is to the Blues' prospects.

Chelsea and Palmer hit a new low last week, with the attacking midfielder ineffective as he was subdued by Brighton's vigilant defence for the second time in as many games, contributing in large part to a blunt 3-0 defeat on the south coast for Enzo Maresca's side that left them down in sixth place in the Premier League by the end of the weekend.

This alarming dip means they have now registered just three wins in 11 games, with one of those coming against League Two strugglers Morecambe in the FA Cup.

Compared to a number of his team-mates, Palmer can still hold his head up high having continued to come up clutch in a number of challenging situations, but there is no doubt that his level has dropped as Chelsea begin to flounder. He needs to rediscover his best form to get them out of a rut.

Getty Images SportStill outstanding in adversity

Let's get this straight first: this is not simply a Palmer problem – Chelsea's No.20 has, until recently, continued to deliver despite the team's overall downturn in form.

It was Palmer who strolled through Fulham's defence to score an outrageous individual goal before the Cottagers came from behind to win on Boxing Day, Palmer who swept home a clinical opener in the disappointing draw at Crystal Palace, Palmer who sat the goalkeeper down and rolled the ball into the back of the net before the Blues surrendered a two-goal lead to be held by Bournemouth.

However, while Chelsea have found a way to win again in the month since amid some continued poor results, Palmer's influence has waned somewhat – although he was still the catalyst for own goals conceded by West Ham and Brighton.

Without his usual influence on proceedings, the west Londoners look far, far less threatening going forward and are evidently struggling for creativity and goals.

AdvertisementAFPFrustrated figure

Such has been Palmer's consistency since he emerged as a genuine superstar at Stamford Bridge last season that he has been conspicuous in his anonymity in recent games. There is a sense that, when Chelsea have really needed him of late, he has not been able to haul them over the line.

Having been quiet in the victory over Wolves, he went AWOL against former club Manchester City, spurning a glorious chance to lay the ball on a plate for Nicolas Jackson when the Blues were already leading 1-0, although the striker could have done better. Maresca's men were made to pay as a City side that was there for the taking came from behind to triumph 3-1.

Another subdued display against West Ham preceded back-to-back defeats in the FA Cup and Premier League, respectively, where he was thoroughly dealt with by Brighton, cutting a particularly frustrated figure in the latter game as he was frozen out by the Seagulls' intelligent pressing as they hunted in packs – a stark contrast to the reverse league fixture when Palmer scored all four goals in a 4-2 victory.

According to , the 22-year-old gave the ball away 12 times in the second half alone at the Amex Stadium as he hit a new low in this current dip in form.

Getty Images SportOverelliance

Chelsea's recent struggles have undoubtedly highlighted an overreliance on Palmer's goals and creativity, meaning that when he is out of form, the whole team seems to be out of form.

With Mykhailo Mudryk serving a doping suspension, Chelsea's available wingers – Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke – have provided a combined 20 goals and assists in the Premier League this season – the same number Palmer has weighed in with all on his own.

Although he was in the midst of his own goal drought, Jackson's hamstring injury earlier in February has exacerbated the situation over the past two games, with defenders zoning in on the Blues' key attacking midfielder in the absence of the tireless Senegalese striker, who is so good at occupying backlines even when he isn't troubling the scoreboard.

Christopher Nkunku has deputised up top, but he doesn't have the same understanding with Palmer and is very clearly not the out-and-out No.9 that Chelsea dearly lack. If anything, the Frenchman arguably gets in Palmer's way as he drops deep to get on the ball having made his name as a roaming No.10.

Maresca needs his other attacking players to do their share and take the initiative, having perhaps grown over-reliant on Palmer's exploits over the past 18 months.

Getty Images Sport'Not only Palmer who is frustrated'

Concerningly for Chelsea and their followers, there are the early signs of discontent behind the scenes; Palmer went straight down the tunnel following the full-time whistle on the south coast on Friday before being ushered back onto the pitch to acknowledge the disgruntled away support, who had vented their frustration during the dire 3-0 loss.

Addressing the situation later on, Maresca said: "Football is a team game, it’s not tennis; it’s not only Cole Palmer who is frustrated. In one way it can show the desire of Cole to improve things. But it’s not just about Cole, it’s about all the players.

"It’s a little bit like the fans, when you don’t win a game it’s normal that they are not happy and when we win games everyone is happy and the players are exactly the same. When we don’t win, they feel frustrated. We need all of them in this moment to be more positive because this is a moment where we need to stick together and try to finish in the best way."

Trouble at the top for Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s collapse on the first day highlighted an ingrained problem in their Test batting, where they have failed to get to 100 without the loss of four wickets in 91 instances out of 161 Test innings

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur27-Jan-2014Bangladesh have a top-order collapse roughly once every two innings. When Mominul Haque was dismissed, Bangladesh were 59 for 4 in the 18th over, and it became the 91st time out of 161 Test innings that Bangladesh’s first four wickets fell before the score had reached hundred. The easy assumption after the latest collapse would be to call it complacency, particularly after having a decent 2013 batting-wise and an even better previous Test series against New Zealand three months ago. The worst batting performance last year was in the first Test in Zimbabwe last April, when everyone surrendered to seam and the threat of a shorter length. The same theme followed in this first innings as Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal bowled a shorter length and produced bounce from the Mirpur wicket with more wrist-action on the ball. All of the batsmen tried to play shots, but weren’t manufacturing them, to their credit. But the day’s scorecard is dismissive enough of their batting approach. Monday’s collapse was the result of bad habits, proper planning from the opposition and impetuous strokeplay, though the current top-order contains batsmen with more ability than it did in the past. Tamim Iqbal’s hook shot didn’t connect well, Marshall Ayub missed a ball that moved in just a bit, Shamsur Rahman played away from the body – his natural reaction to anything pitched up – and Mominul pulled the ball when he shouldn’t have.Bangladesh weren’t too troubled by the bounce till they started pulling and hooking. Tamim is a naturally aggressive batsman, and could have taken the tougher route of hanging back and waiting for the bad ball. But as an opener who likes to go after the bowling, he thought the best way to answer Sri Lanka’s stifling length would be attack the short ball. The result was a catch at long leg, but he would have tried it on most occasions.Marshall is in need of runs at No. 3, Bangladesh’s newest entry into that crucial spot. He is a natural middle-order batsman, but due to his technique and domestic runs, he was selected to plug this gap. He has the second innings left in this Test to prove his credentials, and that innings will be pivotal for his future.Shamsur started off with edges, timed the ball for a while before he edged once more. For a debutant opener, he deserves more time to showcase his attacking approach at the crease. These four wickets were followed by the routine recovery act. Shakib Al Hasan and captain Mushfiqur Rahim added 86 for the fifth wicket stand but when you start from 59, ending on 145 doesn’t offer much help. The pair’s approach should be followed however as they only went after short and wide ones, and batted within themselves during the partnership. This was the sort of discipline that Mushfiqur would have expected from the top four. Shakib started off quickly before reining in his strokes for the rest of the afternoon, until missing a sweep shot off Rangana Herath.Mushfiqur got a borderline call when the ball appeared to take an inside edge, but replays proved inconclusive. His exit confirmed that Bangladesh would not have a lower-order resurrection, and when they were bowled out for 232, the blame laid squarely on the misfiring top-order.Luckily, none of the Bangladesh top-order batsmen give excuses. Tamim is in a quest to achieve greater heights as a batsman while his new partner Shamsur has made 267 earlier this month, and is a heavily experienced domestic batsman. So is Marshall, while Mominul’s recent record gives some assurance that he has the knack for a big score. Most importantly, they have to make sure a second collapse is not repeated, and ensure that the short ball is handled a lot better the next time around.
