During the transfer window, the Belgian knew he had to get things spot on, otherwise, it would likely be another one-horse race in the Premiership. While several signings have settled in well and shown that they might be a key part of the future, the majority have struggled.

The main priority for Clement after the 2023/24 season ended was bringing the wage bill down significantly. The likes of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack all departed when their contracts expired, saving the club around £77k-per-week in the process.

Jefte and Barron have featured 14 and 11 times respectively for the first team this season, while the jury is still out on Cortes and Igamane. Time will be given to those who don’t have much experience, but can the same be said for those who have arrived with plenty to prove?
Robin Propper was expected to be the heir apparent to Goldson, but he hasn’t exactly hit the ground running so far. Nedim Bajrami has shown plenty of promise, although he has been forced to play on the left wing rather than through the middle due to injury issues.
Vaclav Cerny was a signing who, on the surface, looked like having all the hallmarks of being an excellent one. A winger who is entering his prime years and scored four times in the Bundesliga last season.
The reality, however, has been very different.
Vaclav Cerny’s season in numbers
Registering three goals and two assists in 13 games since joining the Ibrox side hints at a positive start, but more often than not, the Czech gem has played poorly.
His struggles have been apparent in Europe especially. In the first two Europa League fixtures, Cerny has missed two big chances, succeeded with just 0.5 dribbles per game and created zero big chances. These are the matches where Clement expects big things from the former Ajax gem.
His two-goal salvo against St Johnstone before the international break skews things slightly with regard to his domestic statistics, but it is clear the winger needs to improve massively.
Over the previous few years, the Gers have struggled to find effective widemen capable of contributing goals and assists, while also creating plenty of chances.
They released someone in 2012 who is now starring across the pond and would make a big difference to the current first team – Lewis Morgan.
The Rangers star who left for nothing
The current New York Red Bulls star joined the Rangers academy back in 2004 when he was aged just eight, going on to spend the next eight years at Auchenhowie before being released in 2012.
Not to be deterred by his release from the Ibrox side, Morgan soon joined St Mirren and went on to make 118 appearances for the Buddies over the next six years, scoring 29 goals while registering 23 assists for the club.
It didn’t take long for his form to get noticed, as Celtic lured him back to Glasgow in 2018, but his spell at Parkhead was hardly wonderful, scoring only twice in 31 games for the club.
A move to the MLS in 2020 has proven to be the catalyst for him to kickstart his career, first shining for Inter Miami before joining New York Red Bulls in 2021.
Lewis Morgan’s season statistics
Hailed as “dynamic” by his former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, the Scot has exuded this quality for his club side during the 2024 MLS campaign.
Across 31 matches in all competitions, Morgan has registered 20 goal contributions – 13 goals and seven assists – while also creating 13 big chances, averaging 1.7 key passes per game and succeeding with one dribble each match.
Compare this to Cerny, who has scored only eight goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, chipping in with just three assists, suggesting Morgan would have been a far more effective threat out wide than the Czech winger.
When compared to his positional peers, Morgan ranks in the top 5% for shot-creating actions, progressive carries and progressive passes over the previous 365 days. Cerny, in comparison, doesn’t even rank in the top 50% for these metrics when compared to players in similar leagues over the same timeframe.
This is yet more evidence of how much better Morgan is at the moment over the current Rangers loanee.
Still ‘only’ 28, Morgan’s market value could continue to rise following his excellent showings this season. Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, the forward is currently valued at €5m (£4m).
Of course, the Light Blues didn’t know back in 2012 how good a player Morgan was going to be, releasing him due to his physical stature. After years of developing in Scotland, he took the plunge and moved to America.
This has not only revitalised his career, but also seen the player establish himself as a more permanent fixture in the Scottish national team setup, playing five times under Steve Clarke.
If Clement was able to call on him rather than Cerny, then perhaps the Gers might have scored a few more goals. For that there is no doubt.

Ipswich Town have enjoyed a meteoric rise under the guidance of Kieran McKenna over the last couple of years after the Northern Irishman took the club from League One to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions.
However, despite his success at Portman Road, the 38-year-old will face his toughest task yet in management by trying to keep the Tractor Boys in the top flight beyond this season.
This year will live long in the memories of the fanbase, spending their first season in England’s top division for the first time in 22 years.
Meetings with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United will ignite the supporters’ hopes of sustaining their Premier League status and ensuring that they don’t go another two decades without top-flight football.
As a result of their shock rise over the last two seasons, heavy investment was needed during the off-season, which led to the club signing one player with bags of Premier League experience.
Kalvin Phillips’ move to join Ipswich Town
After a failed loan move to West Ham United that saw the midfielder feature just ten times in all competitions, Kalvin Phillips had a huge choice over his next move to help ignite his once-promising career.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with Leeds United, featuring 234 times for his boyhood club, before joining Manchester City in a £45m deal during the summer of 2022.
However, the move has been a disaster for the former England international, featuring just 31 times and failing to dislodge Rodri from his starting role in defensive midfield.
As a result, Phillips accepted a proposal to join Ipswich on a season-long loan during the transfer window, with his top-flight experience vital to McKenna’s squad.
The midfielder has made 77 appearances in the competition to date, with his skill set hopefully giving the Tractor Boys that cutting edge in those cagey affairs.
However, they are yet to see the best of the one-time £45m signing, with the 28-year-old only on the pitch for 303 minutes in the league as he looks to regain his full fitness.
Whilst he undoubtedly has the quality to be a monster hit at Portman Road, the club may have been better off pursuing a deal to re-sign a player who’s previously thrived in East Anglia.
The man who Ipswich missed out on this summer
Ipswich’s hunt for new additions took them all over Europe, but they also targeted numerous players close to home, including former Tractor Boy, Flynn Downes.
McKenna’s side made an attempt to sign the 25-year-old after he helped Southampton secure promotion back to the Premier League after their play-off final victory over Leeds United at Wembley.
However, they missed out on a permanent deal to re-sign the midfielder, with Downes securing a £18m move to join Russell Martin’s side – with Ipswich moving onto other targets including Phillips.

When delving into the pair’s respective stats from the current campaign, it’s clear that the current Southampton man has outperformed the Ipswich loanee, potentially seeing McKenna’s side regret not pushing harder for his signature.
The “monstrous” Saints star, as described by his current boss, has excelled in possession, achieving a much higher pass completion rate, whilst also averaging more progressive carries per 90.
Out of possession, Downes also has the upper hand, winning more tackles per 90 whilst winning more aerial battles – demonstrating the qualities he would’ve added in regaining the ball for McKenna’s side.
Undoubtedly, Phillips will provide a solid short-term option for the club, but with the long-term also in mind, Downes would’ve certainly been a better addition for the Tractor Boys.
His quality is evident, as demonstrated by his figures this season, potentially handing the East Anglian that added edge in their battle to avoid relegation this season.

It was the reason they failed at the 2011 World Cup and many a tournament before that, but it was not a disease that spread to the longer format. There a mixture of dynamism and dependability existed. Both those are qualities that are absent in it on this tour of Australia.Of the five innings South Africa have batted in so far, the middle order has let them down every time. In Brisbane they lost 4 for 52 in the first innings and 3 for 63 in the second. In Adelaide, the collapse was more dramatic when five wickets tumbled for 17 runs on the third day.The six overs after lunch in Perth saw three wickets fall as Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Dean Elgar were all dismissed for the addition of only 12 runs. It is this folding that will seem the most glaring because it resulted in a below-par score despite the later recovery.The inability to minimise risk is the root cause for the wobbles illustrated by two of the three dismissals in Perth. Amla was run-out after answering a de Villiers call that should have been more circumspect. De Villiers himself was on the receiving end of a good ball that swung away late to find his edge but then Elgar’s inexperience showed in his short selection. He played an unnecessary pull after being primed by a series of pitched up deliveries from Mitchell Johnson.Jacques Rudolph, who was dropped for this match, was guilty of exactly the same thing in the previous two Tests. His could not blame it on inexperience, though, but a technical flaw. Rudolph played Nathan Lyon in the air in both Brisbane and Adelaide to further underline his vulnerability against offspin and he was left out of the XI to play the deciding Test.Rudolph’s average in his last eight innings was 26.87 and he was an obvious weak link. Because of that South Africa have needed seven batsmen, not to lengthen the line-up as they would have us believe but to recover. In Faf du Plessis they have found an able Mr Fix It. He has the temperament and confidence of someone whose Test career is much older but even his patch-up job on the opening day here could not harden the soft middle order.Just a year ago, South Africa had players who could act as solidifying agents. With de Villiers at No.5 with Ashwell Prince at No.6 there was a combination which could be both sensational and stable. Neither are around anymore: Prince literally so and de Villiers not as we knew him.Prince was dropped after the Boxing Day Test last year, even though he scored a half-century the match before that. He was retained on national contract but has been given no indication that he will play for his country again.De Villiers has become a shadow of the batsman he once was. Although his resilience remains as both his innings in Adelaide showed, his flamboyance has gone. Despite his insistence to the contrary, becoming the full time wicketkeeper has affected his batting and he has not scored a half-century in nine innings since taking over the role.On most occasions he has managed a start but been unable to convert and it appeared to be a problem with patience. Adelaide debunked that myth. He batted for over four hours and faced 220 balls for his 33. His forward defensive made more appearances in that innings that it has done in the ten before them and it was as unbreakable as the wall he had erected around his state of mind.Du Plessis said de Villiers was so defensive in his approach it took even him by surprise. When he joined his school-friend and team-mate at the crease, he hoped they could stay positive at first but de Villiers turned down singles they would normally have run for fun. They both knew they could not present even a sliver of an opening to Australia and de Villiers took that instruction very seriously. As a result, the pair “blocked balls we could have hit for a few,” as du Plessis later said.De Villiers emerged out of that innings with proof that he had the stamina to bat for a long period and that he was able to do that without presenting the chances he had before. Not even a week has passed since that day and de Villiers has reverted back to the player who chased a short and wide Peter Siddle delivery in Brisbane.His running out of Amla and subsequent succumbing to a ball he could have got behind, albeit it a good one, left South Africa facing a paltry first innings total. While Elgar also contributed to that, he cannot be judged yet. To walk in on debut with the team in trouble is difficult. Although he had du Plessis to draw inspiration from, his duck, notable for being the first by a South Africa Test debutant since 1998, will not close his door. A player of the experience and calibre of de Villiers though, should have taken more responsibility.That could be what the South Africa middle order currently lacks most: someone to front up. With a top four that carries the heavyweight credentials of Graeme Smith, the form of Alviro Petersen who has scored three hundreds and two fifties this year and the aura of Amla and Jacques Kallis, it is easy for the rest to think they won’t have much to do.But they will and they need to be properly equipped for that. For as long as de Villiers continues to don the gloves the decision between six and seven batsmen remains unresolved, as does the identity of those players, which is far from the ideal position for solidity.

Chelsea insiders have refused to rule out the possibility of Todd Boehly signing a £162,000-per-week star as well as Samu Omorodion, coming after the club reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid over Conor Gallagher's sale.

It was never a foregone conclusion that the 24-year-old, who was a mainstay under Mauricio Pochettino last season, would leave Stamford Bridge easily. Aston Villa had a club-record bid for Gallagher accepted in June, but the England international opted to stay, and could've chosen to reject Diego Simeone as well.

However, over the weekend, news broke that Gallagher agreed terms with Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract, with the former Crystal Palace loanee rejecting enquiries from two clubs in the Premier League top six to make the move to Spain.
"Conor Gallagher is flying to Madrid today after agreeing terms with Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract," said journalist Ben Jacobs on Monday.
"Chelsea have given him permission to travel and undergo a medical after clubs agreed a €40m fee. Both #CFC and Atletico had given Gallagher until the end of the weekend to make a decision.
"Understand two other top six clubs made enquiries in the last few days, but Gallagher wanted to either move to Atleti or extend at Chelsea. 2+1 extension remained on the table. With only one year left, Chelsea intent on resolving Gallagher’s future this window."
Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano backs Gallagher is set to sign for Atletico, while it is also believed that a player of theirs could well be heading the other way. After Chelsea had a bid rejected for Omorodion earlier in the window, Romano claims they're closing in on a £35 million deal for the striker.
Chelsea had been in talks with Napoli over Victor Osimhen since last week, but the move for Omorodion may not actually have an impact on it.
Chelsea could sign Osimhen as well as Omorodion
According to a report in The Telegraph and by journalist Matt Law, Chelsea insiders have refused to rule out signing Osimhen alongside Omorodion before deadline day on August 30 – which is fairly promising news for Enzo Maresca.
The £162,000-per-week striker has been one of Serie A's most prolific scorers since joining from Lille in 2020, and the Blues are attempting to strike a deal which would see Romelu Lukaku head the other way and sign for Antonio Conte.
Chelsea want Osimhen on an initial loan deal, believing they can carry three strikers into next season if Nicolas Jackson plays more out wide. This move could impact their search for a right-winger, though, if they do decide Jackson can feature on the wing so they can get Osimhen through the door.
