Brendan Taylor – 'I left so many runs out there, it is hurting me at the moment'

Zimbabwe captain says he wanted to send a message to his batters that the pitch was still good

Mohammad Isam10-Jul-2021Captain Brendan Taylor hopes his swashbuckling 92 inspires the rest of his Zimbabwe teammates to salvage a draw on the fifth day against Bangladesh. Taylor struck 16 fours in his 73-ball bonanza but got out with roughly ten overs to spare on the fourth day. The home side also lost the stonewalling Takudzwanashe Kaitano shortly afterwards, leaving them on 140 for 3, and a day to keep Bangladesh at bay.The way Taylor batted put the visitors on the backfoot for much of the evening session. He drilled cover drive after cover drive, drove the spinners with ease, looking at times like he was batting in a different league than the batter at the other end.Related

Najmul Hossain Shanto admits Bangladesh in 'good position' but bowlers 'have their work cut out'

He said that the strokeful innings was intuitive, as he was trying to preempt the Bangladesh bowlers’ plans on a pitch he considered to be almost dead for the bowlers.”There was no real intent to play with that amount of aggression, but playing instinctively paid off for me,” Taylor said. “I thought that at the end of day four, the wicket will start getting tired. Instead of just sitting around, I wanted to be a little proactive, and try to send a message to the guys that the wicket is still playing okay. Hopefully I have done that.”I got out at the wrong time, and I felt that I left so many runs out there. It is hurting me at the moment, but there are guys that I have a lot of faith in, as well. It is frustrating (to miss out on the hundred) when you are going that well. You want to kick on (and score the hundred) obviously. From the team’s perspective, it was crucial that I stayed out there for a longer period.”Taylor said that the rest of the Zimbabwe batters are capable of putting up a good fight on the fifth day and that the overnight batters Dion Myers and nightwatchman Donald Tiripano must stave off the first hour as a first priority.”We want to start the first hour well. Hopefully we don’t lose a wicket. We have guys who are technically sound and solid. Unfortunately we lost Kaitano in the end there. He has been a pillar for us. But there are guys there who can really front up, which will be the chat tomorrow. There’s no better time to save a game for your country,” he said.Zimbabwe’s bowlers got punished in Bangladesh’s second innings. Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto struck centuries as the home side could take only one wicket, giving away the 476-run lead. But Taylor said that he was happy with how the bowlers worked hard in this Test.”The attitude has always been good, particularly with the ball as well. The wicket was pretty dead, and the batsmen were going pretty hard at the ball. They were not giving many chances. All I asked my bowlers, was to keep fronting up. They are young guys with great attitude and a lot of commitment. We had to work hard.”Taylor said that Bangladesh’s experience as a Test side showed as they dominated any time they got set in the middle. “They have shown that they are an experienced side. They have dominated, and when they get in, they make it count. We have certainly learned a lot from how they have gone about their business,” he said.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

More details are beginning to emerge about the causes of Ten Hag's downfall at Old Trafford. Senior players felt the Dutchman was extreme in his punishment of Cristiano Ronaldo two years ago, and it's also been reported that Casemiro had little confidence in his training methods. Furthermore, club legend Ferguson questioned the quality of the signings made under Ten Hag.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to The Athletic, Ferguson, a regular at United games since his departure as manager in 2013, told friends that signings have been below the required level. The likes of Antony, Mason Mount and Casemiro were all brought in for expensive fees that haven't worked out, while Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee haven't exactly hit the ground running. The fact that veteran defender Jonny Evans has been one of the better arrivals says a lot about the recruitment under Ten Hag.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In addition to the disappointing signings, some players weren't completely impressed with Ten Hag's approach to training. Casemiro thought the former Ajax coach should have relaxed his intense sessions and preferred Carlo Ancelotti's style at Real Madrid that gave players more freedom and control on their workload.

O clube onde fomos bem recebidos faz total diferença. O trabalho, a estrutura.

Report: Everton pushing ahead in efforts to sign "amazing" £40k-a-week ace

Everton are planning a new approach for an "amazing" Premier League player in the coming days, according to a new transfer update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have been backed to sign plenty of players in the summer transfer window, having already completed some effective pieces of business. Iliman Ndiaye has come in from Marseille, while Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has also completed a move to Goodison Park.

In terms of other potential new signings, Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto has been mentioned as a strong target for Everton, with the Italian someone who could dovetail nicely with Jesper Lindstrom, who has joined on loan from Napoli until the end of the season.

Wilfried Gnonto

Lyon and Republic of Ireland centre-back Jake O'Brien is another target reportedly close to joining the Merseysiders. The 23-year-old is an impressive young defender who started 27 matches in Ligue 1 last term, scoring four goals and registering two assists for good measure.

Another target is believed to be Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik, who has proven himself at the top level for a sustained period of time, scoring 17 goals in 73 caps for Poland. At 30, he isn't getting younger, but he has shown what a force he can be in front of goal and could give Sean Dyche the extra firepower that he craves.

Everton plan new approach for "amazing" ace

According to a new update from CaughtOffside, Everton are now planning a fresh approach for Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer.

This report also states that the Albania international is "still waiting to see if AC Milan make a move in the final part of the transfer window", adding that "Brentford could also look to do business for him".

Broja arguably hasn't quite reached his potential as a footballer considering how highly rated he has been since a young age, with former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino saying of him last season:

"The potential is amazing. We’re talking about one of the young strikers in England and in Europe with [the] most potential. But the problem now is he needs to push himself, and we’re going to try to help him to realise that never it is enough."

The Albanian has been around for some time, but it is easy to forget how young the £40,000-a-week Broja still is at 22, and there is no doubt that he is a hugely talented player with an eye for goal, having netted 16 times in 35 appearances for Chelsea's Under-18s during his teenage years, and also finding the net five times for his country to date.

Dyche already has an upgrade on £50k-p/w Everton star who could be sold

The Toffees are still looking to offload numerous first-team players.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 27, 2024

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin's Everton future up in the air amid interest from other clubs, the Chelsea attacker could be an intriguing replacement for the Englishman, coming in as a player who is still raw, but someone who is capable of finding further levels in the coming years.

Contact made: Nottingham Forest offered ex-Real Madrid star in free deal

In what could be their biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, Nottingham Forest have reportedly been offered the chance to sign a former Real Madrid star for free.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

The Reds have kept themselves busy this summer with additions such as Elliott Anderson and, most recently, Nikola Milenkovic as they look to hand Nuno Espirito Santo the chance to move his side away from Premier League relegation trouble and into the comforts of mid-table. Milenkovic's arrival is particularly impressive, with the former Fiorentina man coming in to replace Moussa Niakhate, who swapped Forest for Lyon this summer.

After welcoming the central defender, Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson told Forest's official website: “We are excited to welcome Nikola to Nottingham Forest today. He is a key part of our squad planning this summer and I know how enthusiastic he has been to join the club.

“We have long admired his performances with the Serbian national team, and in Serie A and European competitions for Fiorentina. We are delighted that he will bring his experience and qualities to Nottingham Forest.”

It looks as though experience could be the way forward too. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Nottingham Forest have been offered the chance to sign James Rodriguez after the former Real Madrid star rescinded his contract at Sao Paulo. Now a free agent, Forest as well as the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa have been approached by Rodriguez's reps for the opportunity to seal a deal that could certainly steal plenty of headlines.

James-Rodriguez-Colombia

Rodriguez proved that he can still perform on the biggest stage this summer when he helped Colombia reach the Copa America final, where they eventually lost out to Argentina.

"Outstanding" Rodriguez could still be a difference-maker

A player who has played at the very top for both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, Forest have quite the opportunity to sign an instant difference-maker in Rodriguez, who has proved in the past that he can also steal the show in the Premier League.

During his time at Everton, the playmaker earned plenty of praise from then-manager Carlo Ancelotti, who said via the Liverpool Echo: "It's football, the pitch is the same everywhere. But he has to adapt to his new team-mates and know their movements and his team-mates have to adapt to know his quality better. He did four days of training and his performance was outstanding. This is what he can do on the pitch."

The sheer thought of Rodriguez combining with Morgan Gibbs-White is enough to get behind the idea of Forest welcoming such a talent before the summer window slams shut at the end of the month. But, given how many clubs have been offered the same opportunity to sign one of the best free agents in the market right now, those at the City Ground may find it difficult to secure Rodriguez's signature.

Melbourne Stars have unveiled their first overseas signing ahead of the BBL with uncapped Englishman Joe Clarke set to join the club for the entire season.Clarke, 25, played three games for Perth Scorchers in last year’s BBL as a replacement player prior to Jason Roy’s arrival. The Nottinghamshire opener is coming off an English summer where he scored a stunning 136 from just 65 balls against Northants in the T20 Blast. He also played for Karachi Kings in the PSL and Manchester Originals in the Hundred.”I’m pretty excited about coming down to Melbourne for the Australian summer and getting involved at the Stars,” Clarke said.”The Stars are known for the quality players that are involved, so it was a pretty simple decision for me to commit to this summer and play in front of all the fans in green. I know Melbourne has been through a tough 18 months with COVID so I’m looking forward to being part of the fun that is ahead this summer.”Stars coach David Hussey revealed Clarke could well do some wicketkeeping in the BBL, with a versatile wicketkeeper-batter one of key pieces to balance the Stars line-up in recent years.”It’s well known in the UK how talented Joe is and we want his time with the Stars to hopefully lead to even bigger things in the future for him,” Hussey said.”He’ll be a great fit for our batting lineup. He’s a really clean striker of the ball and has scored consistently in the competitions he’s played in the last couple of years. Joe also gives us an option with the wicketkeeping gloves so all those elements will be beneficial for our team shape.”

Wolves eyeing up Ligue 1 defender

According to French outlet L'Equipe, the Molineux side have tabled two bids for Nantes defender, Bastien Meupiyou, the latest one standing at around €4m (£3.4m), although these have both been rejected.

The report claims that Nantes have set a price tag of at least €10m (£8.5m) in order to sell one of their most promising players, despite the fact he has a year left on his current contract.

If he isn’t keen on signing a new deal, the youngster will likely leave France for pastures new. Could O’Neil take advantage of this and bring him to England in the coming weeks?

It wouldn’t be the first time they have signed a talented defender from France…

Why Bastien Meupiyou could be Wolves’ next Ait Nouri

Prior to the 2020/21 season, the Old Gold signed Rayan Ait-Nouri on a season-long loan deal from Angers in France. A year later, after 24 appearances, the club signed him on a permanent deal for a fee in the region of £9.5m.

Rayan Ait Nouri

Fast-forward three years and this outlay has proven to be a bargain. The left-back is now attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City as Wolves set a price tag of around £60m in order for any club to secure his services.

Meupiyou could follow in Ait-Nouri’s footsteps if he also makes the move from Ligue 1, forging his way into the first team and shining for the club over the next few years.

The 18-year-old may have played only one senior match for Nantes, but it is clear his ceiling for development and progression is almost limitless.

The defender has made 36 appearances for the various youth teams at the French side, but it is evident that exposure to senior football on a regular basis is best for his continued growth.

He did play seven matches for France at the U17 World Championships last year, finishing the tournament with an 86% pass success rate, keeping four clean sheets, winning 5.6 total duels per game – a success rate of 63% – and committing just 0.1 fouls per game, showcasing his stunning defensive qualities.

Lauded as an “amazingly talented CB” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in February 2023, Meupiyou has impressed significantly since then, hence the interest from the Premier League this summer.

Will he renew his current deal with Nate? Or is moving to the Midlands an attractive proposition for someone who looks like they will go right to the very top?

Ait-Nouri has exceeded all expectations at the club. Could Meupiyou follow suit?

Shepherd the star as Amazon Warriors down Knight Riders in Super Over showdown

Needing to defend seven in the one-over shootout, Shepherd conceded only four to complete Amazon Warriors’ league double over the defending champions

Sreshth Shah01-Sep-2021
Guyana Amazon Warriors win the one-over eliminatorThe match belonged to Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Romario Shepherd. He first took 3 for 24 to restrict Trinbago Knight Riders to 138 for 9, then hit a nine-ball 18 to take Amazon Warriors to the same total, and finally conceded just four runs in the Super Over to help his side do the league-stage double over the defending champions.Defending six runs in the Super Over, Shepherd first had Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard hole out first ball. Then he did not allow Colin Munro or Tim Seifert to hit a boundary off the other five balls. His all-round effort justifiably earned him a Player-of-the-Match award too.Nicholas Pooran’s Amazon Warriors needed just 139 to win after Shepherd and offspinner Mohammad Hafeez picked three wickets each to restrict Knight Riders to a below-par total. Shepherd made the most damage in the first innings’ death overs removing Pollard, Denesh Ramdin and Isuru Udana. Hafeez had made the early inroads by dismissing opener Sunil Narine, No. 3 Tion Webster and an off-colour Tim Seifert.Colin Munro, who struggled with a 47-ball 40 in his team’s last CPL match found his form to anchor the innings with a 28-ball 32. However regular wickets never allowed the Knight Riders to push for a big total, and if it wasn’t for Udana’s nine-ball 21 in the slog overs, the Amazon Warriors might have been chasing a much lower total. However, the Knight Riders fought back with the ball in the second innings powerplay. Chandrapaul Hemraj and Odean Smith fell in the first two overs to Ravi Rampaul’s deliveries that had a tendency to snake into the stump line after pitching. Shimron Hetmyer and Hafeez then began a rescue act, but the Pakistan international eventually perished for a 30-ball 16. Narine then had Hetmyer and Shoaib Malik caught behind in quick succession, and after Rampaul picked off Pooran and Brandon King in consecutive balls, it looked like the Knight Riders were going to win the contest. It however needed the Amazon Warriors’ Nos. 9 and 10 to take them to a tie. Shepherd tonked two sixes and a four to score 18, and then Naveen-Ul-Haq hit a five-ball 13. Amazon Warriors needed two off the final ball to seal a one-wicket win, but a run out while searching for the double dragged the game to overtime.

Tottenham open negotiations for two more signings with Dominic Solanke

Tottenham have reportedly opened talks over two more signings amid their sealed agreement for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, as Spurs seemingly look to end the window on a high for manager Ange Postecoglou.

After completing deals for Timo Werner and Archie Gray, it appears Solanke is next in line to join Postecoglou's side this summer.

Spurs have reached a complete agreement to sign Solanke, coming after the Englishman bagged an impressive 21 goals in all competitions over some vital performances for the Cherries last season.

The 26-year-old was and is a key player for Andoni Iraola, who will be saddened to lose him when his move to Tottenham becomes official. It is believed that Solanke is "desperate" to play for Spurs next season, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein, which may have helped to speed the move along.

Solanke has agreed a six-year contract at Spurs, as per Ornstein again, and the club will pay Bournemouth the entirety of his £65 million release clause. This comes after Postecoglou admitted to the press that bringing in a new number nine was a major priority for Tottenham this summer.

"At Celtic, I had Kyogo, who was a sort of out and out number nine and in Japan, I've always had a striker," said Postecoglou on Spurs signing a new striker.

"It just depends, like last year we had to be a bit creative, it's fair to say. You know but if Harry would have stayed I definitely would have used him! So I think for us what's more important is the type of striker we get. You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical perspective from the technical aspects of it that it's going be a striker that fits that mould."

With Solanke compeleting a move to north London, focus now turns to who could follow the Englishman, with just weeks of the window remaining.

Tottenham open talks for two more signings after Dominic Solanke

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has shared a further update on Spurs' plans beyond bringing in a new number nine.

Writing for Football Insider, the reporter claims Tottenham have opened talks for two more signings before the deadline, as chairman Daniel Levy and co also look to reinforce their options for the wing and their left-back area.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

While targets haven't been named in the report, Fabrizio Romano has backed that Spurs could look to bring in a new winger, depending on opportunities, while Postecoglou may need left-back cover after the departure of Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer.

Emerson Royal featured at left-back on occasion last term, but a move to AC Milan is still very much on the cards (Alasdair Gold), meaning Spurs could find themselves requiring an alternative to Destiny Udogie.
