The German kicked off his tenure with back-to-back victories at Wembley, securing a 2-0 win against Albania before defeating Latvia 3-0 in their opening World Cup qualifiers. After making a successful start, Tuchel has sent a strong message to several players, making it clear that their World Cup aspirations could be in jeopardy unless they secure more playing time at the club level, as reported by A total of six players – four who were initially left out of the squad and two who were included – are now said to be exploring potential transfers in order to strengthen their chances of making the final squad for the global showpiece.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

One of the biggest names facing an uncertain future is Jack Grealish, who has struggled to establish himself at Manchester City this season. He has been a peripheral figure at the Etihad, managing just six Premier League starts. After being dropped by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, he remains on shaky ground under Tuchel as well. Reports suggest that the England boss has urged Grealish to take more responsibility off the pitch if he hopes to regain a key role in the national team setup.

Meanwhile, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is another player assessing his options. The young centre-back has been in impressive form for the Toffees but was overlooked in favour of Newcastle’s 32-year-old Dan Burn, who earned his first England call-up. Branthwaite is reportedly considering whether a move to a more prominent club could boost his international prospects.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Jacob Ramsey of Aston Villa is another talented player who narrowly missed out on Tuchel’s squad. Although he remains a fan favourite at Villa Park, he has struggled to secure consistent playing time under Unai Emery. With competition for places in England’s midfield heating up, Ramsey may be tempted by a move that guarantees him regular starts.

Similarly, Morgan Gibbs-White has been performing well for Nottingham Forest but was still left out of England’s initial squad selection. He eventually received a late call-up following Cole Palmer’s injury but did not feature in either match. He is now believed to be considering a switch to a more established club to improve his chances of making the final squad for the World Cup.

    WHAT NEXT?

Two players who did make the recent squad but are still contemplating transfers are Marcus Rashford and Aaron Ramsdale. Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United, finds himself in an uncertain position. Despite showing flashes of form, he does not appear to have a future at Old Trafford, and his long-term place at Villa remains unconfirmed. With his England spot far from secure, Rashford may seek another club where he can be guaranteed a starting role.

As for Ramsdale, the goalkeeper is facing an almost certain departure from Southampton, whose relegation to the Championship is nearly sealed. With Tuchel likely to prioritise goalkeepers playing in the Premier League, Ramsdale is expected to push for a move to ensure he remains in contention for one of the three goalkeeper spots in the World Cup squad.

Man City now want to seal January signing of 24 y/o attacking "phenomenon"

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing the signing of an attacking “phenomenon” in the January transfer window, as they look to ease Erling Haaland’s workload.

Haaland struggling for Man City

City’s terrible run of form continued on Boxing Day, with Pep Guardiola’s side only able to draw 1-1 at home to struggling Everton in the Premier League, despite taking the lead at the Etihad.

For Haaland, it is arguably the toughest run of his career to date, with the Norwegian spurning a wonderful opportunity to seal all three points for the hosts, seeing a penalty in the second half saved by Jordan Pickford.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

Having been the most feared attacking player in the country ever since joining City in the summer of 2022, Haaland has seemingly lost confidence and accuracy in front of goal, as well as offering little in terms of all-round link-up play. He has only scored six league goals since the end of August, which is a huge barren spell by his high standards.

The 24-year-old arguably hasn’t been helped by those around him, as well as a lack of options to rotate in attack, with the decision to sell Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in the summer looking increasingly strange. Now, it looks as though a new player is being eyed up.

Man City keen on signing attacking "phenomenon"

According to The Boot Room, Manchester City are interested in signing Lille star Jonathan David in the January window, with the 24-year-old on their list of potential additions.

It is stated that the reigning Premier League champions “have been watching the in-form striker in recent weeks”, as they stay “wary” of Haaland’s fitness, not wanting to overplay him.

David could be exactly what City need in January, with the Canadian arguably the most dangerous attacking player in Ligue 1 currently, scoring 11 goals in 12 starts in the competition this season.

The striker also has a superb record of 31 goals in 59 caps for Canada, while former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck has said of him in the past: “He is a phenomenon. The best player in the country. He will be the most expensive outgoing transfer from Gent. They would happily sell him for £25 million or more.”

It goes without saying that David will not solve all of City’s current problems on his own, with injuries at the back and a lack of legs in midfield proving to be huge issues for Guardiola currently.

That said, the Lille hero could immediately take some of the pressure off Haaland’s shoulders, allowing the City superstar some rest, potentially leading to him finding his best form again in the second half of the season.

David is a born goalscorer, as his record for club and country proves, and at just 24, there is still a lot more to come from him, making him a great option for the Citizens.

Beware Jackson: Chelsea chasing "monster" who’d be their own Gyokeres

Chelsea spent €238.50m (£197.2m) in the 2024/25 summer transfer window, bringing ten new players to the club on permanent deals, and one player on an initial loan deal (Jadon Sancho). The investment was made in positions all over the pitch, signing two goalkeepers, four defenders, one midfielder, three attackers/wingers, and one centre-forward.

However, the one centre-forward signed was Marc Guiu, who joined from Barcelona for a fee of around £5m. The 18-year-old striker was bought as a future investment, and the Blues were looking at other strikers alongside him during the summer window, to join and compete with Nicolas Jackson upfront.

Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Jhon Duran, Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres in the recent past, but they could now dip into the January transfer market, and acquire their very own answer to Gyokeres, with this 18-year-old striker sensation.

Chelsea's search for a striker

According to reports from Patrick Berger (Sky Sports Germany), Chelsea are interested in signing FC Nurnberg striker, Stefanos Tzimas, who is also subject to interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle.

The report states the 18-year-old striker would likely cost around £18-19m. The Greek forward has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season for FC Nurnberg, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 922 minutes played.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig labelled Tzimas a “natural-born killer” and a “true monster”, showing elite levels of clinical finishing since playing at professional level.

Equally, data analyst Ben Mattinson stated Sporting should be going after Tzimas as their “Gyokeres replacement”, showcasing the worthy rival the teenager could be to Jackson at Stamford Bridge.

Jackson vs Tzimas comparison

Jackson has made 16 appearances for the Blues this season, scoring nine goals, providing three assists and totalling 1,221 minutes played. The 23-year-old striker has become integral under Enzo Maresca, for both his in and out of possession qualities.

However, Chelsea are clearly looking for an alternative profile, in order to equip Maresca with the necessary tools to switch up in games, and apply all the tactical tweaks he wants in order to give his side the best possible chance of winning.

Tzimas is just 18 years old and already stands at 6 foot, with a stocky upper body frame. His ability to use his strength to bully defenders, gain touches in the opposition penalty area (7.55 per 90) and pin central defenders is something the Blues are looking for.

He is also believed to be still growing and developing, and is seen as a player with untapped aerial potential, despite only winning 0.43 aerial duels per 90.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

What makes Jackson so important to this Chelsea side, is his ability to drop deep and link play, and by acquiring Tzimas, you gain a unique profile, who offers that physical frame and robust nature, whilst also having the quality to join in build-up, as demonstrated with his progressive passing and carrying metrics.

That no doubt mirrors the aforementioned Gyokeres – who averages 1.81 progressive passes and 4.20 progressive carries this season – with the prolific Swede also a towering presence at 6 foot 2, while boasting the clinical nature to match, after netting 61 goals in 2024 to date.

If the Blues were to sign Tzimas, Jackson would retain his number nine position which his performances have earned, whilst providing a new profile for the squad, one that is needed, and someone to compete with and push Jackson, challenging for minutes.

Kusal Perera wants Sri Lanka batters to provide momentum in T20Is

After disappointing displays in the ODIs, Sri Lanka finally found form in first T20I in Auckland

Sri Lanka’s top order hasn’t had the best time on tour so far, but in Auckland on Sunday, they finally clicked into gear. Pathum Nissanka may have fallen first-ball, but Kusal Mendis scored 25 in just nine balls, Dhananjaya de Silva 15 in 10, and then Charith Asalanka and Kusal Perera raced at nearly 10-an-over during a century-plus stand. It helped Sri Lanka tie the game and then score their first win of the tour in the Super Over. For Perera, playing his first competitive match for some 15 months, the intent shown by all those batters should be the blueprint going forward for success in the format.”It’s hard to play a T20 without momentum, and to win in T20 cricket you need a batter to provide that momentum,” Perera said after the game.Related

Mitchell puts emphasis on 'winning little moments' with young team after Super Over thriller

“I went ahead with a positive mindset, I wasn’t thinking about how long I had been out. Likewise, all the other batters also went out with a positive mindset, and that’s how we managed to capitalise on the conditions.”As for his own game, while he wasn’t completely at his destructive best, Perera was hopeful that with more consistent game time a more familar “match rhythm” would return.”Of course being out there in the middle and playing, I’m very happy with my performance. More than that I’m happy that the team won. That said I know there’s room for improvement and that will only come as I improve my match rhythm.”Charith Asalanka made a 41-ball 67•AFP/Getty Images

Now 32, Perera is one of the seniors in the squad, and his 45-ball 53 where he batted through the innings highlighted his evolving role in the side. Whereas once he was the player the side looked to for impetus, now he’s seemingly content to bat deep and allow the likes of Mendis and Asalanka to take on the bowling. In this game, Asalanka scored 67 off 41 in their 103-run partnership.”A lot of the batters showed good initiative, but batting with him [Asalanka] was easy as he took the strike and took on the bowling. That took the pressure off me, and what I tried to do from that point was turn over the strike and bat deep. When you have an innings like that [of Asalanka’s], more often than not you’re going to be nearing 200.”The action now moves to Dunedin and Queenstown thereafter, where the weather is expected to be much colder. Perera believes overseas tours such as these, in unfamiliar situations and conditions, will provide invaluable experience to younger members of the squad.”We know that the next venue is going to have different conditions, we just need to figure out how to be as competitive as we were today.”For me, experience means knowing how to handle certain situations. There are a lot of young players in the squad, and what I’ve told them is you have start learning now how to handle uncomfortable situations. Bowlers aren’t going to bowl how you like, they’re going to analyse you and be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. We need to be smart in those situations.”

Sky Sports: Leeds could sign 26 y/o who "takes good free kicks" for Farke

Leeds United could now sign a set piece master on an initial 18-month deal this January, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

Farke addresses Leeds January transfer plans

Daniel Farke may currently have his Whites side top of the Championship, however, it isn’t all positive at Elland Road. The club have begun 2025 by throwing away leads late on against both Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier having another afternoon to forget last time out.

Farke continued to back Meslier in his latest press conference, though, saying: “We were all angry after the last game. Our supporters have the right to be critical, there is pressure and that is normal we have to accept that. But some pundits and comments were pretty disrespectful. The outside world love to try and divide us, but we are close together and we back our players.

“We were not happy with the last game, we want to improve his consistency and it is important to address this, but his performances have been good enough to make sure we are top of the league. We are all convinced Illan will deliver more good moments for us and we back him, there is no panic and he is a very, very good goalkeeper.”

The German also stated how the club are expecting a quiet winter window: “Younger players for their development it makes sense to send them out on loan, we will assess the rehab of Patrick and how that progresses, but overall we are in a very good position and I expect a very quiet January.”

Leeds could sign their next Archie Gray in "one of the best CMs" around

Leeds United could be about to land a new version of the talented youngster.

1 ByEthan Lamb Jan 10, 2025

One player who has recently been linked with a move to Leeds is Hoffenheim forward Mergim Berisha, who previously scored 23 goals under ex-Whites boss Jesse Marsch.

New Leeds update on move for Mergim Berisha

Now, taking to X, Sky Sports journalist Ben Heckner revealed that Leeds are indeed keen on Berisha, who could potentially be on the move in an initial 18-month loan with an option to buy in 2026, with Werder Bremen also keen.

Berisha hasn’t exactly been prolific for Hoffenheim this season, scoring once and registering one assist in 540 minutes of action. He did come in for praise from Germany coach Antonio Di Salvo back in 2023 after Berisha was handed his first senior international call-up.

“We brought Mergim on when he was still as Salzburg. He works very well with his back to goal, can shoot with his left and right and takes good free-kicks. You can see from his hit rate in the Bundesliga that he can prevail.”

Should Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt both move on, then a move for Berisha could make sense, despite his poor goal tally this season, making this one to watch over the coming weeks.

Red-hot Mumbai look to extend winning run against Dhawan-less Kings

Big picture: Two teams on different trajectories

There’s a popular meme template: how it started and how it’s going. Mumbai Indians’ journey so far in IPL 2023 fits that perfectly. They began the season with two crushing defeats before bouncing back with three wins on the trot.Even before those two defeats, their batting had looked solid on paper. But the lack of runs from Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav threw a spanner in the works. With both coming into their own over the last two games, Mumbai look a much stronger unit. For Punjab Kings, Mumbai’s opponents on Saturday, things have gone the other way round. After winning back-to-back games – something they failed to do last year – they managed just one more win in their next four outings.Kings’ plan with bat was that their captain Shikhar Dhawan plays the anchor’s role and others hit around him. But Dhawan’s shoulder injury caught them without a back-up plan. And now they have the added worry of Kagiso Rabada having picked up a niggle – he missed their last game due to this, and ESPNcricinfo understands he will sit out the game against Mumbai too.*Injury issues aside, Kings need to figure out their best combination of overseas players. Sikandar Raza was the Player of the Match against Lucknow Super Giants but was left out for the RCB game. Kings may have to revisit that decision.

Team news: Archer-watch

Kings will once again be without Dhawan and Rabada. On Thursday, their fielding coach Trevor Gonsalves said Dhawan would take “at least another two to three days” to be fully fit. Mumbai will be optimistic about Jofra Archer as he has shown vast improvement since he felt the discomfort in his right elbow post the first match. He even bowled full tilt during the practice session on Thursday, and Jason Behrendorff, too, said on Friday that Archer was “not too far away”.

Stats that matter

  • Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have given Mumbai flying starts in IPL 2023. Among those pairs who have opened at least three times this season, Rohit and Kishan’s scoring rate of 9.61 is second only to Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 9.75.
  • So far in this season, Kings have lost three or more wickets inside the powerplay on three occasions, the joint-most for a team along with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Pitch and conditions: Win toss, bowl first

The Wankhede is a chasing ground. Since the start of 2021, the teams batting second have won 22 out of the 32 night T20s played at this venue. Spinners have been more successful here this IPL; they have 13 wickets at an economy of 7.64, while fast bowlers have nine at 10.17.*

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Gunners were in pole position for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams for a potential January move, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit.

According to reports from Spain, Arsenal are determined to strengthen their attack this winter, meaning they have now set their sights on Williams, who is valued at around £50m by his current employers.

There will be competition for the Spaniard’s signature, with Barcelona also in the frame, but there is a feeling that Arteta’s side could hold an advantage over the La Liga club.

The Gunners have an advantage over Barca in terms of money, and they can offer the 22-year-old the opportunity to be a part of an exciting project in the Premier League, which could be a decisive factor in his decision.

Exciting news for Arsenal

With Saka out injured, there could be no better player to come in on the right flank than Williams, considering just how impressive he has been for Athletic Club over the course of the past few seasons.

The Spain international chalked up a remarkable 14 assists in the previous campaign, and his versatility could also make him an attractive option for Arteta, given that he is clearly able to play on both wings, having done so regularly in La Liga.

The BBC’s John Bennett was also full of praise for the attacker for his performances in Euro 2024, saying:

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal could be well-placed to beat Barcelona to Williams’ signature this month.

R Ashwin surges to No. 1 in Test bowling rankings

India offspinner R Ashwin has replaced England’s James Anderson as the No. 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings.Ashwin’s rise was the result of him taking six wickets in the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Delhi, and he has the opportunity to extend his lead at the top in the remaining two Tests of the series.Anderson had displaced Australia’s Pat Cummins as the No. 1 bowler on February 22, after taking seven wickets in the first Test against New Zealand. At the age of 40, he was the oldest top-ranked bowler since Australian legspinner Clarrie Grimmett in 1936. 'Breach of trust' – Chelsea fans REPORT Blues chief Todd Boehly to the Premier League over ownership of 'unauthorised' ticket resale website charging 'significantly inflated' fees

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Boehly is an investor and director of an "unauthorised" US-based website called Vivid Seats that resells Premier League tickets to foreign tourists at vastly inflated prices which has caused anger among some fans. Chelsea supporters have now written an open letter calling on the Premier League to "act and investigate" in a bid to ensure "that a major shareowner of a Premier League club ceases facilitating the sale of tickets for significantly above face value."

  • Getty Images

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea fans have complained that Boehly's actions are a "breach of trust" and "a clear conflict of interest." The letter also accuses Vivid Seats of "contravening Chelsea FC ticketing policy" and undermining efforts to combat ticket touting.

A spokesperson for the Chelsea Supporters Trust said: "Vivid Seats continues to list Premier League tickets for above face value at significantly inflated rates and our members have continued to indicate that Mr Boehly’s connection with Vivid Seats is a breach of trust and a clear conflict of interest. Not only does this undermine the efforts of Chelsea FC, The Premier League, and The Metropolitan Police to combat ticket touting, but Vivid Seats contravenes the Chelsea FC ticketing policy, and is explicitly named by the Premier League as a known unauthorised ticket website. We believe that now is the time for the Premier League to act swiftly and ensure that a major shareowner of a Premier League club ceases facilitating the sale of tickets for significantly above face value.”

  • WHAT THE CHELSEA SUPPORTERS' TRUST SAID

The open letter to Richard Masters, Chief Executive Officer of the Premier League, reads: "We have received a significant amount of correspondence from concerned CST members and supporters from the wider Chelsea FC fan base on this issue that cannot be ignored. Since its inception, the CST has been in regular dialogue with Chelsea Football Club, the Premier League, the Football Supporters’ Association, and other key stakeholders regarding the ongoing battle against ticket touting and the illegal sales of tickets on third-party websites.

“We were therefore dismayed when, in early February, it was highlighted that Todd Boehly sits on the board of directors of Vivid Seats. It has also been reported that through his holding company, Mr Boehly owns approximately 41 per cent of Vivid Seats. Vivid Seats currently lists tickets for every Premier League fixture for the remainder of the season and most tickets are being sold for above face value at significantly inflated rates. For example, a ticket for Liverpool’s final home fixture of the season is currently listed on Vivid Seats for almost £20k. Most notably, Vivid Seats currently lists hundreds of Chelsea FC general admission tickets at significantly inflated prices. As these tickets are not sold by the Chelsea FC website, they are considered by CFC to be ‘illegal sales’.

“To further compound matters, Vivid Seats is also explicitly named on the Premier League website as ‘a known unauthorised ticket website’. Many CST members are clearly infuriated by this connection and have written to us to say that Mr Boehly’s association with Vivid Seats is a ‘breach of trust’ and ‘a clear conflict of interest’.”

“As a director of Chelsea FC and part-owner, Mr Boehly’s connection with Vivid Seats is totally inappropriate and significantly undermines the efforts of Chelsea FC, the Premier League, and the Metropolitan Police to combat ticket touting. Mr Boehly has been contacted directly by the CST and has been offered multiple opportunities to both publicly and privately address supporters’ concerns. Neither Mr Boehly nor his representatives have, however, acted on these requests, and thousands of tickets remain for sale on the Vivid Seats website.

“The CST firmly believes that it is now time for the Premier League to act and investigate. We would welcome your views as chief executive officer of the Premier League on this matter and anticipate that the Premier League would take this opportunity to act swiftly and ensure that a major shareowner of a Premier League club ceases facilitating the sale of tickets for significantly above face value.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA

The Football Supporters’ Association also backed the call and said: "The Football Supporters' Association is right behind the points made by our members at Chelsea Supporters' Trust. It is crystal clear that the Premier League needs to take action. Clubs, supporters' groups, the police and the Premier League itself has worked hard in recent years to combat ticket touting – there is no excuse for a club owner to be involved in such activity."

Chelsea's next home game is against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on April 3.
