England hope that Brydon Carse can replicate Liam Plunkett’s success in the middle overs after drafting him into their World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Reece Topley.Carse will arrive in Bangalore ahead of England’s match against Sri Lanka on Thursday, though is unlikely to be considered for selection having last played competitively four weeks ago. He featured in one of England’s four ODIs against New Zealand last month after impressing in the T20I series, and also played for their second-string side against Ireland.Carse, 28, was born in South Africa but is a UK passport-holder who plays for Durham and Northern Superchargers in domestic cricket. A tall, powerful seamer who can also contribute with the bat from the lower order, he has won 12 ODI caps and three T20I caps since making his debut in 2021.”He’s a brilliant all-round package,” Joe Root said on Monday. “He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He’s got that [Ben] Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening and he’ll pick up wickets.”England had swiftly and unceremoniously moved on from Plunkett after the last World Cup, when he was 34, and Carse is the closest like-for-like replacement that they have used in the four years since. “He almost feels like a junior Plunkett,” Root said. “He’s very similar. Pudsy [Plunkett] might not like me saying this, but he’s probably got even more to offer with the bat as well.”Root also expressed his sympathy for Topley, who was officially ruled out of the World Cup on Sunday after scans confirmed a fracture in the index finger of his bowling hand. “The poor lad, it just doesn’t seem to stop for him,” he said. “Every time he does extremely well and gets a string of performances together where he’s playing good cricket, he just seems to get a setback.”England travelled from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday afternoon following their 229-run thrashing by South Africa. They will train on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon before playing Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday, the first of five must-win group fixtures as they aim to reach the semi-finals despite three defeats in their first four games.”The situation we find ourselves in now, we’ve got to make sure that we’re ready and in the best possible place to perform well in the next game,” Root told Sky Sports. “We’ll look at that as a World Cup final now – then do the same for the game after that, and the game after that. All we’ve got to do is really focus on Sri Lanka.”I’ve played in a number of different England teams, good ones and bad ones,” Root said. “This is one of the very best. It’s a very together team. We know what we need to do… We’ve got some very simple messaging in front of us right now: we have to go out and win. In some ways, that unshackles us and frees us up to do what we do.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The incident occurred near the hour mark in the second half, when Kalulu appeared to attempt to hit Castellanos in the back. Juve were leading by a goal at that point, but Kalulu's sending off helped Lazio pile on the pressure in the closing stages, as Matias Vecino scored the equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The draw could prove costly for the Bianconeri, who are yet to secure the fourth spot and subsequently, a spot in next season's Champions League.
DID YOU KNOW?
In addition to the ban, Kalulu will also be fined by Juventus for his misconduct on the field. Per reports from (h/t Football Italia), the Old Lady will be fined around €50,000-€60,000.

A few weeks ago, Hamza Igamane was all the talk at Glasgow Rangers. Not only delivering on the European stage, with four goals across six games, but the youngster began to show his worth domestically.
Between December 4 and January 15, Igamane scored nine goals in the Premiership, including a brace against Motherwell to salvage a draw, before netting a wonderful hat trick against Hibernian, although more points were dropped by the Light Blues.
Hamza Igamane
Since then, however, he has looked poor. Philippe Clement will be hoping the Moroccan striker can return to his best over the next couple of weeks.
Hamza Igamane's stunning debut season
As mentioned, Igamane has saved his best displays for the European stage. A double against Nice was impressive, but the way he took his goal against Tottenham Hotspur in December was perhaps even more so.
Reportedly, Everton sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action against the Premier League side, and it looked as though they might be weighing up a January bid for the striker.
Nothing came of it, but over the previous few weeks, his performances have been rather muted. Could he be affected by the recent interest shown in him from down south?
In the Europa League, Igamane scores once every 91 minutes, while he also has a goal conversion rate of 36%. It is no wonder clubs are showing plenty of interest in the player.
Domestically, Igamane averages three shots per game, while creating five big chances, averaging one key pass and succeeding with 1.3 dribbles per match in the Premiership.
These statistics are excellent, especially considering plenty of eyebrows were raised following his signing from AS FAR last summer, costing the Gers around £1.7m.
Eight months later, he could turn out to be one of the best pieces of transfer business the club has conducted in the previous few years.
One that got away
There is no doubt the Light Blues will make a stunning profit on the centre-forward. The question is, when is the right time to sell him?
Depending on his performances over the next few months, this summer could see a flood of bids arrive for the African sensation, especially with a few more goals under his belt.
Over the years, the Gers have been forced to sell some of their finest players in order to remain financially stable.
However, they have also missed out on a fair few players who have since gone on to bigger and better things. Joey Veerman was wanted by Steven Gerrard during his spell as manager, and now he is shining for PSV Eindhoven.
Another player who the Gers were reportedly keen on a couple of years ago is now attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world after an incredible couple of seasons.
Sporting CP's ViktorGyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres has been wonderful during his time at Sporting CP. Might the Ibrox side have secured his signature at one time, however?
Rangers's pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres
Towards the end of the 2022/23 season, it was clear Michael Beale required some added quality in his attacking department, especially if he wanted to end Celtic’s domestic dominance.
Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal
According to Football Insider, the club were reportedly interested in Coventry City hitman Gyokeres and even made a move to land his signature after lodging an enquiry. The Swedish sensation had scored 21 goals in the second tier and they would go on to lose the playoff final to Luton Town.
This form didn’t go unnoticed as many clubs chased his signature, especially as the Sky Blues failed to secure promotion, it was evident that the striker would be on the move.
Dubbed as “unplayable” by his teammate at Coventry, Maxime Biamou, Gyokeres made the move to Portugal, joining Sporting.
Whether or not Rangers had a chance of luring him to Ibrox back in May 2023, there is absolutely no chance they will be able to sign him now.
The striker is arguably one of the best in Europe.
Viktor Gyokeres’ stats in Portugal
One thing is certain, the club will make a significant profit on the former Coventry hitman when they do decide to cash in. Sporting paid €24m (£20m) which would have been way out of the Light Blues’ price range anyway.
Since then, he has scored an incredible tally of 77 goals across just 85 games for the Liga Portugal side, spearheading them to the league title during his maiden campaign at the club.

With three months left of the 2024/25 campaign, Gyokeres has already notched 34 goals in 35 matches, a truly astounding strike rate that puts a lot of strikers to shame.
Compare this to Igamane, who has netted 13 goals in 30 matches, and it proves just how big a gulf there is between the two forwards.
While it was always unlikely he would move to Glasgow, Rangers’ recent woes would surely have subsided had they been able to call upon the talents of Gyokeres, no doubt about that.
Viktor Gyokeres’ current market value
It comes as no surprise to hear that Gyokeres is attracting plenty of interest from the biggest clubs in Europe.
The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for the Swedish star over the previous few months.
This summer could be the chance to finally lure him away from Portugal, although it might take a massive fee to do so.
Indeed, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Gyokeres’ price tag has dropped from €100m (£83m) to €70m (£60m), which could please certain clubs, that’s for sure.
It is clear that Rangers made a huge blunder in not trying to work out a deal to bring the “powerhouse” striker – as hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson – to Ibrox back in 2023, especially considering how wonderful he has been since.
It might have cost a club-record fee, but considering the form he has shown over the previous 18 months, Gyokeres would have raked in a gigantic profit for the Gers.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Larsson are other top targets being considered by Arteta’s side, with the north Londoners plotting a potential overhaul in the engine room (Florian Plettenberg).
Arsenal are not actively looking to sell Gabriel Martinelli, despite some reports, but they would be more inclined to listen to offers for Leandro Trossard, considering the Belgian is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates (Ben Jacobs).
Defensively, uncertainty surrounds the future of Oleksandr Zinchenko given his lack of game time under Arteta, while fellow left-back Kieran Tierney is poised to join Celtic when his Arsenal contract expires this summer.
Kiwior, who hasn’t played a single Premier League minute since mid-December, is also facing his final few months as an Arsenal player.
Arsenal identify Marc Guehi as potential replacement for Jakub Kiwior
That is according to website Just Arsenal, who claim Arteta’s side are preparing to sell the 25-year-old for a price of up to £25 million.
The versatile centre-back isn’t exactly short of admirers, with Sevilla, Villarreal, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, and Bologna all expressing an interest in signing Kiwior during the last transfer window.
Unnamed clubs from England have also inquired over Kiwior’s availability, so this could be one to watch. In terms of potential replacements for him, it is believed that Arsenal are weighing up a summer move for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi.
Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action
The England international was subject to a surprise £70 million bid from Tottenham in January, with Chelsea also viewed as firm contenders to re-sign Guehi after letting him join Palace in 2021.
Arsenal are apparently considering a move for Guehi, though, and have identified him as a strong candidate to reinforce their backline. As well as the Eagles defender, it is believed that Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato are other options being thought of.
Despite Guehi’s deal being set to expire in 2026, Palace could demand as much as £75 million to let him go this summer.
Revamp of central contracts system comes as part of bid to prevent talent drain to global T20 franchise circuit
Vithushan Ehantharajah22-Sep-2023The ECB has offered unprecedented three-year contracts in a bid to quell the threat of franchise teams co-opting England’s best and brightest cricketers. The deals are a revamp of the pre-existing central contract structure which solely featured year-long deals, and come at a time when IPL ownership has spread into other T20 competitions around the world, allowing franchises to recruit players solely for their purposes all year round. It is understood 26 contracts have been offered, an increase from the 18 full and six incremental contracts handed out last October. Of the 26, around 20 are multi-year deals, with a group of top players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Mark Wood in receipt of three-year packages.Jonny Bairstow is understood to be one of the majority offered two-year contracts. Single-year offers are on the table for those not featuring on the franchise circuit, such as Jack Leach, and others at the back end of their careers, like James Anderson, who recently turned 41.It is perhaps with regard to fast bowlers that the protection of assets is most evident. Young quicks like Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson, who made their international debuts this summer, are expected to sign multi-year contracts. Similarly, Jofra Archer, 28, could be in line for a three-year deal having reportedly been subject of much interest from Mumbai Indians looking to recruit him full time. Archer played for MI Cape Town in the SA20 at the start of the year ahead of his IPL season with Mumbai, which ended prematurely through injury.England’s players will now decide whether to accept the contracts. While the basic remuneration has been agreed upon, those offered multiple years may request 12-month deals to give themselves greater flexibility. These contracts, which will come into effect from the start of October, represent a significant step forward for the ECB after a month of back and forth with the England team. There will inevitably be kinks to iron out and disgruntled players who have narrowly missed out on the initial batch. But by and large, the situation is regarded as more beneficial, particularly for those who go on to sign lengthier contracts.”It’s certainly not negative, it kind of gives you a bit of security,” Ben Duckett, who is understood to have been offered a two-year contract, said ahead of England’s second ODI against Ireland. “I think it’s great that they’re offering these contracts.”The security of players wanting to keep playing for England is perfect. For me the main thing is walking out and representing my country, it’s not really a contract but that’s a bonus.”The number and size of the respective contracts are possible through an additional £3.4million added by the ECB to the collective pot, with the split among the 26 players decided by a performance rating points system. The system awards points relating to all three formats, ranging from whether a player is likely to feature in Test and white-ball squads to “recognition of extraordinary performance” in the previous 12-month cycle. These will be re-assessed annually.Finer points are still to be ironed out, notably insurance pay for injury and other such clauses.
Usman Khawaja’s blow to the head showed the risk of not having a concussion sub, but Andrew McDonald remains comfortable with releasing players

Malcolm: ‘A very one-sided match at Adelaide’
Australia could release Matt Renshaw to play in the BBL Challenger on Monday, and the final on Wednesday if Brisbane Heat qualify, despite the second Test starting at the Gabba on Thursday and Usman Khawaja needing to be monitored following his head knock in the first Test against West Indies.Australia’s selectors took a rare gamble during the Adelaide Test when they released Renshaw from the squad on the second night of the match to fly to the Gold Coast to play in Friday night’s BBL Qualifier against Sydney Sixers.Related

Brathwaite: Shamar Joseph 'gave a lot of confidence to the team'
It left Australia without a reserve batter at the venue if they needed a concussion substitute on the third day and they got a glimpse of how much of a risk that was when Khawaja was struck on the head by Shamar Joseph in Australia’s second innings and had to retire hurt. But the state of the game meant a substitute wasn’t required as Australia only needed one run to win.Khawaja passed his first concussion test on Friday and scans cleared him of any damage to his jaw. He will need to pass another concussion test on Saturday to ensure he is not experiencing delayed symptoms and he will be monitored in the lead-up to the second Test in Brisbane. But despite the scare, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said the selectors are unlikely to add another batter to the squad and they may release Renshaw again to play for the Heat on Monday on the Gold Coast and possibly for the final in Sydney on Wednesday.”I think the information that comes from Uzzy [Khawaja] will then dictate how that sort of unfolds,” McDonald said. “I suppose the positive for the Brisbane Heat is that the final now will be on the east coast somewhere which makes it probably time-friendly to be able to potentially play the final. If it was on the west coast it would be much more difficult.Matt Renshaw was released from Australia duty to play for Brisbane Heat•Cricket Australia via Getty Images
“We consider the risk when we release players and I think it’s about 0.5% chance in terms of a concussion happening. So it was ironic that the first time we’ve let a player go back during the Big Bash that there was a head knock. Fortunately enough, the game was in a position where we thought that it wasn’t going to be a higher risk than necessary. So we were happy for Renners to go back and perform for the Heat.”We feel as though we’ve got flexibility when we need to be able to release players and we like seeing players play.”McDonald said it was difficult to judge how the revamped batting order had functioned after just one game on a very challenging pitch where two players in the match passed 50. Steven Smith only got to face 48 balls in his first game as an opener as he finished 11 not out in Australia’s chase of 26.”Sample size of one is always difficult to judge,” McDonald said. “We’re comfortable with where it’s all landed. We feel as though that top six and the way they complement each other gives us the best opportunity to maximize [scores]. We’re very comfortable with Smudge at the top of the order and then seeing Cameron Green back out there in the field, with ball and bat in hand was great to see as well. So we’re optimistic that they will work. And I suppose hindsight will tell us everything.”Australia’s batters were impressed by the quality of Shamar Joseph’s bowling during the Adelaide Test but the coach believes they will be better prepared for him in Brisbane after getting a good look at him.”Sight unseen is always difficult for batters,” McDonald said. “When you haven’t seen someone and got used to their rhythm and the cues that they present sometimes you do get drawn into shots that potentially you don’t play and we saw that with Marnus as well. It was maybe his second bouncer, he probably didn’t have the cues and it rushed him a little and brought about his demise.”So we feel as though now that there’s less unknowns going into the second Test match. We’ve had a good look at them. A lot of those little decision-making errors that may have crept in I think will have ironed themselves out.”

Leeds pushing for promotion with Meslier struggling
da mrbet: The Whites head into the final eight games of the Championship following the international break top of the table, however, there is still plenty of work to be done if they are to secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s side have four home games against Swansea City, Preston North End, Stoke City and Bristol City, and away, Leeds have to travel to Luton Town, Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle.
One player who looks set to start all those games is Meslier, who has been backed by Farke all year, despite the Frenchman making some costly mistakes. Talking about the Frenchman’s errors in a 3-3 draw with Hull City at the start of the year, Farke said:
“When the goalkeeper makes one or two mistakes it is natural to talk about changes. We don’t change a goalkeeper quickly like a full-back. There is no rule that a player is not dropped. If a centre-back was to score loads of own goals he would be dropped. But straight after the game I am not going to finger point.”

Leeds looking to sign £25m goalkeeper compared to Pickford
According to Give Me Sport, Leeds will look to sign Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher this summer, should they win promotion.
The Reds goalkeeper is expected to cost around £25m and Leeds are eyeing the Republic of Ireland international ‘due to the uncertainty’ around Meslier.
Compared to Jordan Pickford by FbRef, Kelleher has interest from ‘a host of other clubs’, so it could be tricky for Leeds to seal a deal, even if they do go up.
An ambitious target, Kelleher previously came in for praise from Virgil van Dijk, who claimed the goalkeeper should have got the Player of the Match award following the Reds’ EFL Cup final win over Chelsea in 2024.
“He should have got it. I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think. I have always said he is world class and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”
