Mark Robinson enters frame for Warwickshire head coach role

Mark Robinson, the former head coach of England women, could be set for a return to cricket, after emerging as a strong candidate for the vacant role of Warwickshire head coach.ESPNcricinfo understands that Robinson, who was head coach when England Women won the World Cup in 2017, has a second interview with the club this week.Mark Ramprakash, Graeme Welch and Donovan Miller, who were among those shortlisted for the role, were not invited back for a second interview. As well as his success with England Women, Robinson was head coach when Sussex won the County Championship in 2005 and 2007, the Friends Provident Trophy in 2006, the T20 competition in 2009 and the Pro 40 League in 2008 and 2009.During this period, he gained a strong reputation, not just for his ability to coax performances from his players but for signing players of previously untapped potential. Jofra Archer and Ollie Robinson (no relation) both joined the club on his watch. He also gained admiration at Sussex and with England for the manner in which he helped Michael Yardy and Sarah Taylor through tough periods in their personal lives.Robinson’s England side also reached the final of the World T20 in November 2018 but, less than a year later, he was sacked after his side were overwhelmed by Australia in the Ashes. He has not held a high-profile role in the game since. The Warwickshire job became available after Jim Troughton was sacked at the end of the 2020 season. The positions of the remainder of the coaching staff – Tony Frost (batting), Welch (bowling) and Ian Westwood (second XI) – are understood to be safe. Paul Farbrace remains as director of cricket. An appointment is expected before Christmas.

Newcastle now eyeing move to sign "fantastic" £58,000-a-week forward

da blaze casino: After missing out on a place in the Premier League's top four, Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on signing an upgrade on Callum Wilson for Eddie Howe this summer.

Newcastle transfer news

da bet7k: The Magpies certainly aren't messing around, with reports suggesting that they've already reached an agreement with Lloyd Kelly for their first summer arrival, whilst aiming for the same free deal for Tosin Adarabioyo. Clearly aware of their squad depth troubles, Newcastle could seal two deals to instantly cover for the injured Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

The backline isn't the only area which could welcome changes, however. Reports suggest that Callum Wilson's Newcastle future is still in doubt with his injuries not going away and the forward not getting any younger. With his contract running out next summer, Newcastle are running out of time to cash in on Wilson, which could see the striker depart in the coming months at 32 years old.

At such an age, whether he leaves this summer or not, those at St James' Park will need to start thinking about a replacement for Wilson sooner rather than later. And that's where Youssef En-Nesyri could come in on a contract which could be worth a reported £58k-a-week.

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are eyeing a move to sign En-Nesyri from Sevilla this summer alongside West Ham United and Aston Villa. The 26-year-old has impressed in La Liga over the last few years and this isn't the first time that he's been linked with a Premier League switch, with West Ham linked with a move last summer.

Now, with three clubs reportedly interested, the forward could finally land a move to England and into the role of replacing Wilson at Newcastle. A player in demand, En-Nesyri has quite the decision to make this summer – a decision which could result in a move to St James' Park.

"Fantastic" En-Nesyri is better than Wilson

If Newcastle are looking to replace Wilson whilst offering something a little different to Alexander Isak, then En-Nesyri represents an ideal choice. Howe could even decide to form a deadly partnership between Isak and the Moroccan should the Magpies push ahead with their interest – he's certainly capable of keeping up with the Swede.

What's most impressive about all three forwards is how clinical they have been this season, outperforming their expected goals rate. It's a trait that's hard to find, but one that En-Nesyri crucially possesses ahead of potentially replacing Wilson this summer.

Described as a "fantastic young forward" in the earlier stages of his career by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, En-Nesyri has since developed into a reliable goalscorer, who could now find himself handed the chance to thrive in the Premier League.

As Newcastle look to reclaim a top four spot next season, signing players of the forward's calibre will quickly prove to be vital for Howe and his current side.

Spurs must finally axe Pochettino signing who earns more than Son

Recent results aside, things are generally looking up for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment.

They have a popular manager in the hot seat who is dedicated to playing aesthetically pleasing, attacking football, and while they might not make the Champions League, they stand a great chance of qualifying for the Europa League.

Moreover, with the summer transfer window right around the corner, the club have an opportunity to flex their financial muscles a bit and really back Ange Postecoglou's vision.

Ange Postecoglou

That said, alongside bringing some players into the club, Daniel Levy and Co must cut the deadwood, and there is one high earner in particular that simply has to go.

Tanguy Ndombele's Spurs career

Come on, who else could it have been?

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele joined Spurs from Ligue 1 giants Lyon in the summer of 2019, attracting considerable fanfare from supporters and pundits alike due to his impressive performances in his home country and the Champions League.

For example, in an assessment that might still haunt him to this day, The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke wrote (for the Independent) that 'The £55million arrival of Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais is not just the most important football signing of the summer, but the loudest statement about the direction of any club for years.'

Tanguy Ndombele

However, in his defence, most of us thought he would be a hit signing at the time, as just a year prior, Pep Guardiola described the Lyon team he was a part of as being "full of quality" after it was reported that the Spaniard encouraged Manchester City to sign the midfielder ahead of Spurs.

Fortunately for them, the Lilywhites got their man, and despite the odd good performance here and there, the Frenchman has never been able to live up to the expectations people had for him, often being labelled as "lazy" by fans and pundits for his apparent lack of effort on the pitch.

The 27-year-old has made 91 appearances for the club since 2019, scoring ten goals, providing nine assists, and leaving on loan three times, and to make matters worse, when he returns from his current loan, he'll be the club's top earner.

Tanguy Ndombele's salary at Spurs

When Ndombele joined the North Londoners in 2019 for £63m, he was handed a massive £200k-per-week deal, which, at the time, made him the joint-top earner at the club alongside Harry Kane and means that he's currently making more money than club captain and icon Heung-min Son, who makes around £190k-per-week.

tanguy-ndombele-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-hojbjerg-pochettino

His mammoth salary comes to around £10.4m-per-season, which means, for the first two and a half years at the club, he earned £26m before spending the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan with Lyon.

With it clear that he no longer had a future in N17, Antonio Conte agreed to send the central midfielder on loan to Serie A giants Napoli last season, who paid €3.5m – £3m – towards his salary, leaving Tottenham to foot the other £7.4m.

Whereas this year, his new loan club, Galatasaray agreed to pay just €3.1m – £2.6m – meaning Postecoglou's Spurs are still paying a massive £7.8m for a player they clearly do not want.

Therefore, when combining the Frenchman's wages from his time in England and on loan with his transfer fee, the total cost will amount to a whopping £104.2m by the end of the season, and it could be even higher depending on the agreement the club had with Lyon in 2021/22.

In other words, the Longjumeau-born flop cost Spurs around £1.1m-per-appearance, £10.4m-per-goal, or £11.5m-per-assist – talk about value for money.

Ultimately, while there have undoubtedly been worse players to have represented Tottenham in the past, the sheer amount of money involved here has to make Ndombele one of the worst transfers in the club's history, and if Galatasaray do not take up their €15m – £13m – option to buy at the end of the season, Levy and Co must be cold and terminate his deal.

Man Utd can now end Casemiro experiment by starting their teen sensation

This time last season, during Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign, Manchester United had already confirmed their spot in the Champions League.

However, fast forward to today, and the Red Devils welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford as the two sides battle it out for a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

Erik ten Hag

However, after United’s 4-0 hammering by Crystal Palace and a 1-0 defeat on Sunday against Arsenal, there’s the possibility that Europe isn’t achieved at all this campaign.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at who could come into the lineup to solidify the backline and finally replace Casemiro.

Why Casemiro must not start at centre-back

Due to the injury crisis that has plagued the Man United backline, Ten Hag has been forced into the experimental decision of playing Casemiro at centre-back.

The Brazilian’s first outing in this role was the 3-3 draw versus Coventry City in the FA Cup, and since then, he’s played every game in defence.

Manchester United star Casemiro

However, the defensive midfielder by trade has received plenty of criticism for his performances against Palace and Arsenal, with creator Liam Canning labelling Casemiro as “beyond embarrassing” after the game at Selhurst Park.

During that defeat, the 32-year-old played a role in three of the Eagles’ goals and was dribbled past seven times. On top of that, he was at fault for the Gunners’ goal at the weekend, playing Kai Havertz miles onside, which highlights his lack of understanding of the role.

It’s quite clear that Ten Hag must deploy a true centre half against the Magpies, and luckily, there’s one waiting for a shot to shine.

The player to replace Casemiro

Willy Kambwala has already had his fair share of first-team football this season, much more than he’d have anticipated at the start of the campaign.

The 19-year-old defender has featured eight times in the Premier League for the Red Devils, including three starts, with the latest of those being the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

At the weekend, Kambwala returned to the pitch after a short spell on the sidelines, coming on as a 75th-minute substitute for Jonny Evans, where he made one tackle and won all of his duels.

However, there were cries for the French ace to start ahead of Casemiro prior to the game, with even United legend Peter Schmeichel saying:

“Casemiro can't play centre-back, he was exposed on Monday night so why don't you put a proper centre-half like Willy Kambwala in there rather than on the bench?”

Although it is simply a matter of fielding one of the only available centre-backs at the moment, Kambwala has certainly proved that he can hold his own when called upon.

His performance against Liverpool highlights that, as he also displayed that he has a vast skillset, including technical ability and confidence, as shown by his touches, pass accuracy, and possession lost.

The 6 foot 3 defender is also extremely physical, and he’s not afraid to get tight to the opposition striker, which increases the overall intensity of Ten Hag’s side.

However, what may prove vital against Newcastle and Alexander Isak in particular is Kambwala’s excellent athleticism and turn of pace, which were on display in a race against Darwin Nunez during the 2-2 draw.

Overall, there’s no benefit to fielding Casemiro in the team over Kambwala, and given that he’s always impressed when playing, the youngster simply has to start today.

West Indies women in England: 'Women's cricket needs this' – Stafanie Taylor

Captain hails “great feeling” ahead of imminent return of top-level women’s cricket

Matt Roller01-Sep-2020West Indies women have arrived in the UK ahead of their five-match T20I series against England at the end of this month, with captain Stafanie Taylor hailing the imminent return of top-level women’s cricket as a “great feeling”.The 18-member West Indies squad left Antigua on a charter flight on Sunday night and reached Derby, where they will be based throughout their tour, on Monday. Derbyshire’s home venue, the Incora County Ground, has been turned into a bio-secure environment – having earlier housed England women’s training camp and the Australia men on their arrival to the UK this summer – and players from both sides will stay in the on-site hotel at the ground throughout. The West Indies squad is without Anisa Mohammed, the veteran offspinner who declined the invitation to tour, with uncapped Guyanese left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz included.ALSO READ: Germany women enjoying new-found fame after record-breaking seriesBefore the squad’s departure, Taylor said that the tour was vital for women’s cricket, not least following the T20 World Cup final in March, which saw over 86,000 people at the MCG to watch Australia thrash India. While Germany and Austria have played five T20Is, this tour will see the first women’s international cricket between full members since that final, with New Zealand’s tour of Australia following soon after. “It’s a great feeling,” Taylor said. “I was pleased to hear there was a possibility that we might have a tour, so to see it actually happen is good.”We definitely need this – women’s cricket needs this. To see what happened in that recently-concluded World Cup, when there were 80,000 people at the ground [for the final] and a lot of people watching… it’s good to see that we’re back up and running.”ALSO READ: Knight ‘pretty gutted’ at 2021 World Cup postponementWhile England’s players returned to individual training in June and have already played a handful of intra-squad warm-up games and appeared for their domestic sides in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, West Indies are coming in cold. They were well beaten on their last tour of England, losing 3-0 in the ODI series and 1-0 in the T20Is, and with their comparative lack of preparation, it would be a major upset if they were to come away with a series win.Taylor admitted she expected to feel “a bit rusty” in first few days of training, not least after an enforced break through injury after hurting her groin in the T20 World Cup fixture against England. But she hopes to use her extensive experience of English conditions – including Kia Super League stints at Southern Vipers and Western Storm – to her advantage.”The ball swings everywhere you go [in England], so it’s about applying yourself. I like playing in England – it’s a challenge, but sometimes it’s good to have these challenges,” she said. “We’re just coming back as well, [so] it’s going to take a while, but at least the few weeks that we have will definitely help us going into our first game.”

Casemiro could exit Old TraffordGalatasaray might be his new homeLoan deal most likely optionWHAT HAPPENED?

Casemiro's standing at United has come under scrutiny after his disappointing performance in United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. The 32-year-old was replaced at half-time after costly errors contributed to Liverpool's first two goals, both netted by Luis Diaz. This lacklustre display has cast doubt on Casemiro's future at Old Trafford and he could be shipped away to Galatasaray, according to The report adds that United have been open to Casemiro's exit throughout the summer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Since his high-profile transfer from Real Madrid in 2022, where he was acquired for £60 million ($79m), Casemiro has been one of United’s top earners, with weekly wages reportedly exceeding £300,000 ($394,000). Galatasaray's interest may present a viable option for both parties, but the financial aspects of such a deal remain complex. The Brazilian’s substantial salary could pose a significant hurdle for the Turkish side and a potential loan deal might hinge on United's willingness to cover a portion of his wages.

DID YOU KNOW?

Casemiro's position as a regular starter at United is further threatened by the arrival of Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan was brought in on deadline day for an initial €50m (£42.3m/$55m) fee from Paris Saint-Germain, adding depth and competition to United’s midfield. Although Ugarte was not eligible to play against Liverpool due to registration issues, he will be available for selection after the international break.

As the Turkish transfer window remains open until September 13, Galatasaray will continue to assess their options, with Casemiro seemingly at the top of their list. Farke must now drop 5/10 Leeds star who lost the ball 14x

Leeds United would have walked off at the end of a first-leg stalemate at Norwich City pleased with the grit on display in defence, even if their attacking game was somewhat non-existent.

The likes of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu in the heart of the Whites back four ensured the Canaries were kept at arm's length throughout, receiving various plaudits after the dust had settled at Carrow Road.

Yet, there would have been some frustration amongst the Leeds fanbase at the lack of creativity on show when the visitors from West Yorkshire attempted to bomb forward with Wilfried Gnonto notably failing to spark into life in Norfolk.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Wilfried Gnonto's performance vs Norwich in numbers

The Italian winger was hauled off by Farke on the 70-minute mark, with his performance below-par compared to the standards he's set before down the flanks for Leeds.

Helping himself to nine goals during the regular campaign, there was no danger from a Canaries perspective that he would add more strikes to his account in the lunchtime kick-off with just one effort being registered which was blocked by a yellow shirt.

Only amassing 34 touches of the ball too, with nervy Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier even bettering this lacklustre total with 46, the ex-FC Zurich dynamo was also quiet with his accurate passes tally only coming in at 13.

Leeds Live's Beren Cross dished out a poor 5/10 rating to Gnonto post-match as a result, with Cross stating that the out-of-sorts 20-year-old 'battled well' but 'never got' into dangerous enough positions to regularly test the home side's back four.

Giving possession up 14 times in total at Carrow Road also, Farke could now look to drop his usually dependable ace to freshen up the attack for the second leg.

The main option to come in as the Italian's replacement looks to be Daniel James, who will hope to battle back from his recent injury issues and become a key star in Leeds progressing to Wembley this coming Thursday night if selected.

The player that could replace Gnonto

Given a very brief three-minute run-out against David Wagner's hosts on Sunday lunchtime, James could now be drafted in from the start to give the Whites more energy and drive going forward to overwhelm a tricky Norwich side back in West Yorkshire.

The tenacious Welshman managed to win two duels despite only being on the pitch a matter of moments in the first leg, eager to leave his mark on proceedings in a more obvious way in the second match-up now.

When the two teams met in the regular season at Elland Road, James ended up assisted the only goal of the game to hand Leeds a narrow 1-0 victory – the ex-Manchester United attacker beautifully picking out Patrick Bamford with a sublime cross to head home.

Bamford won't be present owing to injury, but Farke will pray James can be as effective as he was in this close encounter back in January when push comes to shove in the playoffs.

Leeds forward Dan James.

Picking up a staggering 20 goal contributions from 44 clashes before these tense contests got underway, James will have the bit between his teeth to star in the second leg having had to become a background figure as of late with his injury troubles.

Whatever happens, Farke will just want a more open affair on home soil with Leeds potentially putting on a show to then seal a huge showdown at Wembley to be just one game away from a Premier League return.
