Liverpool now preparing bid for £130k-a-week Nunez upgrade who Slot admires

After an improved but still inconsistent second season at Anfield, Liverpool are reportedly looking to sign an upgrade on Darwin Nunez in the form of a striker who Arne Slot is a big fan of.

Liverpool transfer news

There was a period in which Nunez looked to have found his feet, but when Mohamed Salah's form fell away, the former Benfica man failed to show the necessary signs that he could one day be the main man to carry the Liverpool attack in a poor end to the season. In fact, by the end of the campaign, it was even Cody Gakpo who was trusted with the starting role, as Jurgen Klopp ruthlessly benched Nunez.

That form makes the start of next season crucial for the forward, who cannot afford to endure another mixed spell. Into his third campaign, Anfield will no longer be able to deal him the excuse of a new player settling in. Instead, if that consistency doesn't come, the Reds could look to replace the forward altogether if recent reports are anything to go by.

According to reports via The Mirror, Liverpool are preparing a bid for Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, with Slot reportedly an admirer of the forward who finished top of the assists charts and scored 19 Premier League goals in the season just gone. If Liverpool are looking for consistency, then paying the reported £130k-a-week salary of the Villa man is certainly the decision to make.

Ollie Watkins scores for Aston Villa

It won't be easy to lure Watkins away from Villa Park, however, now that Unai Emery and his side have qualified for the Champions League in the Premier League's surprise package of the season. That said, with Michael Edwards looking to make a statement, Liverpool could yet sign the ultimate replacement for Nunez to get the Slot era underway with a bang this summer.

"Amazing" Watkins can be exactly what Liverpool need

Since Liverpool have gone down the route of an out-and-out striker in Nunez, something has been missing in their attack. It's lacked the sharpness and fluidity that it was once famous for with Roberto Firmino leading the line. And whilst Watkins isn't the same type of player as Firmino, he can link play to a far better level than Nunez, as well as carrying the traits of a clinical goalscorer.

On paper, Nunez should be matching Watkins for goals, but the Villa man was just clinical where the Liverpool forward was wasteful in front of goal, with one outperforming their expected goals by just over two and the other significantly underperforming by over five goals.

It's the type of form that saw Watkins earn the praise of Villa boss Emery earlier this season. He told TNT Sports: "He’s amazing. Because he’s a really hard worker and his commitment to work every day is amazing.

"When he is scoring goals, it's the main objective he can have. Where he is assisting as well, he's contributing to help the team. But even when he's not doing both, he's working for the team."

Australian seamer Harry Conway has signed a deal with Northamptonshire to play in the County Championship during May.Conway will join Wantage Road for four Division Two matches. His first will be against Leicestershire (May 2) before fixtures against Lancashire, Glamorgan and Gloucestershire. The 32-year-old has made three appearances for Sheffield Shield finalists South Australia this winter, taking eight wickets at 27.12. A quick bowler capable of extracting decent bounce, Conway reinforces Northamptonshire’s seam options which were diminished by the loss of Jack White to Yorkshire at the end of last season.A former Australia U19, Conway came through at New South Wales, before eventually swapping states with a move to the Adelaide Oval in 2022. He boasts a first-class record of 119 wickets at 28.86 across 46 appearances.Conway joins fellow South Australian Darren Lehmann who now heads up the coaching team at Northamptonshire. Both he and South African Matthew Breetzke are the club’s overseas options for the first half of the season, before the arrival of India leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from June until the end of the season.”I’m super excited for the opportunity to come over and try and win games for an awesome County,” said Conway in a statement released on Friday. “The team is full of young talent, and I can’t wait to play under an international standard coach in Darren Lehmann.”Lehmann believes Conway’s skillsets will see him thrive during his stint. “Harry perfectly fits the mould of English conditions and will hopefully help us get off to a positive start.””The experience that he brings will be invaluable, especially on the wickets that we’ll play on early in the season.”

Spurs targeting replacement for Harry Kane this summer

da apostaganha: Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou has done very well in his first full season without club-record goalscorer and former superstar Harry Kane, guiding the north Londoners back into Europe and contending for a Champions League place over a large portion of 2024/2025.

The majority of their scoring output came courtesy of Son Heung-min and Richarlison, as well as other sources like winger Dejan Kulusevski, with goals being delivered from across the team in a variety of different positions. However, as per widespread recent reports, Postecoglou and the wider Spurs recruitment team are looking to sign another new attacker this summer after Timo Werner – and one who could potentially fill the void left by Kane after his multi-million-pound move to Bayern Munich last year.

Tottenham are open to offers for Richarlison as well, who is attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, so any name coming in would potentially succeed the Brazilian alongside Kane.

There are few names who have been linked with a move to north London as Spurs eye up new front men. This week, Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri has emerged as a potentially serious target for Tottenham, as some Spanish media sources state they're even in advanced talks.

Youssef En-Nesyri

The Morocco international, who reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals in Qatar with his country, scored 20 goals in all competitions last season and could cost as little as £21 million.

However, his lack of Premier League experience is one small downside. Spurs have names in mind more suited to the hustle of English football, like Brentford star Ivan Toney, but a new target to be mentioned this week is former Chelsea hitman Tammy Abraham.

Abraham up for sale with Tottenham tempted to move

Roma have apparently put the Englishman up for sale, which has alerted N17 chiefs in their pursuit of a new striker. According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are tempted to make a move for Abraham after hearing he'll be made available for transfer, with the Serie A side set to demand around £40 million to do a deal.

The former Aston Villa forward enjoyed a phenomenal debut season at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring 17 Serie A goals over 2021/2022, but has failed to replicate those numbers since then – partly due to injuries and the form of his teammates.

"I’ve always said that with the right application, work, commitment and mentality, he can become one of the best strikers in the world," said Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini.

"Tammy has incredible potential. Last season he produced impressive numbers. Besides being a great player, being with him in the dressing room is a pleasure – he’s vital for our group.”

Pollard makes the difference

Kieron Pollard’s stunning 94 was the innings which allowed West Indies to take their two points against a spirited Ireland team

S Rajesh11-Mar-2011Kieron Pollard saved West Indies’ blushes after Ireland pushed them all the way with another whole-hearted performance in Mohali. In 31 previous ODI innings, Pollard had a highest score of 62 – which was one of only two half-centuries in this format – and his average stay at the crease was a mere 20 deliveries per innings. From West Indies’ point of view, Pollard could not have chosen a better time to get his highest in ODIs. His 94 from only 55 balls was the difference between the two teams. Leave aside his contribution, and West Indies’ run-rate for the innings was 4.43; Ireland’s innings run-rate was 4.71.For much of the run-chase, Ireland were ahead of West Indies’ total at the same stage. After 35 overs, Ireland were 157 for 3, compared to West Indies’ 142 for 3 – 15 runs to the good, same number of wickets in hand. From there, things took a sudden turn as Pollard turned it up a couple of gears, while Ireland lost a couple of key wickets – including Gary Wilson’s to a shocking umpiring decision by Asoka de Silva – and completely lost their momentum. After the 35th, West Indies had seven overs when they scored ten or more runs; Ireland only had one such over. The way the two teams used the batting Powerplay was also key: West Indies’s sequence from those overs was 12, 12, 10, 12, 9. Ireland, on the other hand, took their Powerplay when they’d already lost nine wickets, and most runs they managed from one of those five overs was nine.

Pollard’s strike rate for his innings was 170.90, which is marginally behind Kevin O’Brien’s 179.36 for his 63-ball 113. Devon Smith’s 107 is his maiden ODI hundred, and it continues an impressive recent run: in his last 12 innings, he averages 39.66, with one century and three fifties. His overall ODI average is only 27.59. Two bowlers took four wickets in the game, but Kevin O’Brien’s was a fairly expensive effort – it cost him 71 runs in nine overs. His economy rate of 7.88 is the second-highest for bowlers who’ve taken four wickets in a World Cup game, next only to Chris Mpofu’s 4 for 62 in seven overs against Sri Lanka yesterday. Three of the four most expensive efforts have come in this World Cup. West Indies managed only 28 runs in the first ten overs, which equals the lowest for one of the Full Member teams in this World Cup. Australia had scored 28 after ten overs in their first game against Zimbabwe.

West Ham eyeing up “world-class” Ruben Amorim alternative

The pillars of change are shifting down in east London, with David Moyes' tenuous grip on the managerial seat at West Ham United weakened further after a desperate 5-2 defeat against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Having lost, valiantly, to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals last week, a reaction was needed in the top flight to forge a path toward continental qualification, but, eighth in the standings and two points off Manchester United in seventh – who have two games in hand – it's looking unlikely that the Hammers will paint the purple patch needed.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

Sporting Director Tim Steidten appears to have had enough, and while the London Stadium owes much to Moyes and the gains made under his leadership, moves have been made to identify a successor, with the Scotsman out of contract in the summer.

West Ham eyeing Ruben Amorim alternatives

Some exciting news arrived on Monday, with The Athletic's David Ornstein confirming that Sporting manager Ruben Amorim is West Ham's top target and is no longer the frontrunner for the Liverpool job, but Steidten has mapped out a list of alternatives.

According to The Guardian, former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is under consideration.

The 59-year-old has been out of work since being dismissed by Die Mannschaft in 2023, though boasts a wealth of high-level experience and an attractive playing style to boot.

Why Hansi Flick would be perfect for West Ham

Flick first rose to prominence when serving as Joachim Löw's assistant as his nation triumphed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, then moved to Bayern Munich as Niko Kovac's understudy and took the leading position in the dugout when the former Croatia star was dismissed in November 2019.

In that maiden term – not even a full season – at the helm, Flick led Die Roten to a stunning continental treble, winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal. An erudite footballing mind with a far-seeing tactical disposition, Flick, at his best, is up there with the greatest the game has to offer.

One of the most discernible differences when Flick replaced Kovac at the Allianz Arena was a ramping-up of aggression, with goal machine Robert Lewandowski saying: "His tactical and footballing knowledge are at a high level."

He galvanised and wrapped the team into a uniform vision, a singular goal, in short time sparking a change that saw a return to enterprising and fluid attacking football.

It's for this reason that Flick would be the perfect man to lead a new chapter at West Ham. He would arrive at an outfit with a proven record but that nonetheless has fallen by the wayside, and his vision could signal a prosperous change, rooting his philosophy into the London Stadium and swiftly winning the club, wall-to-wall, over.

Moyes has done much for West Ham but his tactics have long been perceived as negative and this has sundered the fanbase into a bleak schism. Success breeds longing, naturally, and the Irons now have a taste of gold.

Amorim, while young and bold and compelling, is more of an unknown commodity and would demand radical shifting in style and system, brandishing a three-at-the-back line-up and completely rewriting the way West Ham play.

Hansi Flick

Flick, conversely, operates with a 4-2-3-1 set-up – as, would you look at that, does Moyes, albeit with contrasting emphases – though is reliant on similar ball-focused build-up, with those in the rearguard equipped with top-class distribution ability.

Moreover, the German has been described as "world-class" by reporter Stefan Bienkowski, a sentiment echoed by the masses when he was at the summit of his career with Bayern.

While Amorim is the frontrunner, it has been stressed that Liverpool remain on stand-by despite distancing themselves from the Liga Portugal table-topper.

Should West Ham opt against moving for one of the most coveted rising stars in the managerial stratosphere, Flick, not quite the grizzled veteran but wizened and substantiated at the top of the game, would be worth the venture – now that there is a first-rate alternative.

Chelsea eye "monster" signing who could be their own Haaland

The centre-forward position at Chelsea has been filled by many quality players recently, but none of them have quite set Stamford Bridge alight.

Nicolas Jackson had a relatively successful debut campaign, scoring 14 Premier League goals, but he’s not quite the Erling Haaland-type striker that Chelsea needs.

Unsurprisingly, the Norwegian ace won his second Premier League Golden Boot last season, scoring 27 goals, which proves he’s the definition of a goal-scoring monster.

However, with Chelsea in the market for a new forward, Todd Boehly will without doubt be looking to find his own Haaland, and he could have just found him.

Chelsea’s search for a new number nine

According to a report from journalists Simon Phillips and Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are confident that they can sign Benjamin Sesko this summer with their interest now described as 'very serious'.

It’s said that Sesko is the 'preferred' number nine target for the Blues, becoming one of the 'top priorities for that position.'

The Slovenian forward is set to be at the centre of a transfer battle between a host of English clubs, such as Arsenal.

It’s been reported that Chelsea are keen on signing the youngster due to the fact that he’d cost less than the likes of Victor Osimhen, for example.

How Sesko compares to Haaland

Since bursting onto the scene with 29 goals and 11 assists in 79 matches for RB Salzburg, Sesko has been regarded as one of the biggest prospects in Europe.

Last season, he joined RB Leipzig, and the fact that plenty of European giants are now chasing him proves how impressive he’s been.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko

The 21-year-old’s record in the Bundesliga last season was simply incredible, boasting a return of 14 goals and two assists in just 17 starts.

His pathway to England could follow the exact same steps as that of Haaland, who tore up the German top flight for Borussia Dortmund before moving to Manchester City, but what else makes him the “Slovenian Erling Haaland,” as scout Jacek Kulig labelled him?

Firstly, the biggest similarity between the two young forwards is that they’re the definition of goal-scorers.

Their only aim is to put the ball in the back of the net, as shown by their fewer touches and creative stats, and they’re at their best in the penalty area.

Furthermore, the duo are incredible athletes who possess impressive speed, which is rather unusual considering Sesko stands at 6 foot 5 and Haaland at 6 foot 4.

Yet the biggest difference between the two is clearly how clinical Sesko is in front of goal, as shown by the xG stats, which highlight that the Leipzig ace can truly score from absolutely anywhere.

For context, Chelsea’s current first-choice striker, Jackson, is the complete opposite, underperforming his xG by 4.64 and missing 24 big chances.

With the creativity of Cole Palmer and the possession-based approach of Enzo Maresca, Sesko would be an absolute "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, due to the sheer number of chances he’d get.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

The new Chelsea boss also proved that he ensures his centre forward gets opportunities to score last season at Leicester City, with Jamie Vardy netting 18 in the league.

Therefore, it’s absolutely clear that Chelsea must do all they can to sign Sesko, especially before a Premier League rival secures him first.

Everton looking to sign DCL 2.0 who’s already scored at Goodison Park

Following on from the 2023/24 season where the Toffees secured survival, Everton will have another huge task next season to maintain their ever-present Premier League status.

Sean Dyche’s side have endured months of uncertainly off the field, from points deductions and failed takeover attempts – they really have been dragged through the mire, further highlighting the excellent job conducted by the 52-year-old.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

In recent days, the Toffees have been dealt a huge blow in the attempts to be taken over with the 777 exclusivity period expiring, with no deal agreed to take control of the club from Farhad Moshiri.

As a result, money will be tight this summer, with Dyche potentially having to operate on a shoestring budget if he is to further bolster his squad ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Free transfers and loans will undoubtedly be the priority, with the club already planning for incomings ahead of the summer transfer window, targeting one player who has the potential to be a big hit at Goodison Park.

Everton interested in signing talented youngster

According to Graeme Bailey, Everton are rivalling Leeds United, Leicester City and Brighton for the signature of Canadian striker Daniel Jebbison.

daniel-jebbison-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

The 20-year-old, who currently plies his trade for Sheffield United, is out of contract at the end of the month, with the Toffees one of the teams in the battle for his signature this summer.

Why Jebbison could be Everton’s Calvert-Lewin 2.0

He’s virtually missed the entirety of the 2023/24 season through injury, featuring for just 20 minutes off the bench in the final-day defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane.

However, he has previously shown his quality in the Premier League, scoring against Everton at Goodison Park in 2020 – a game that was his first start in England’s top flight.

Despite his recent injury issues, he’s still a top talent with a huge future ahead, potentially following in the footsteps of current Toffees number nine Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Many comparisons can be drawn from the potential move for Jebbison, especially considering the club signed Calvert-Lewin from the Blades for around £1.5m way back in the summer of 2016.

He’s also very similar to the 27-year-old in his stature and playstyle, with the duo both towering over 6 foot 3 and basing their game off strong hold-up play and offering a great aerial presence in and out of possession.

Jebbison has previously stated his admiration for the current Everton striker, claiming he based his game on the former Sheffield United man.

Speaking about the Everton forward, Jebbison commented: "He's obviously a good one. I watch his movement, I've studied off of him. He's a very good player."

Daniel Jebbison

The “fantastic” forward, as described by former Blades academy coach Jack Lester, could be the future of the club and potentially add key goals to an Everton side that only managed 40 goals in 38 Premier League matches, a tally only better than bottom side Sheffield United.

Despite his recent injury troubles, Jebbison is a very talented young player and on a free transfer, it will undoubtedly be a shrewd bit of business by the club.

'This is not fake' – Tottenham striker Richarlison claims Ballon d'Or for himself in hilarious social media post

Tottenham striker Richarlison has been having some fun on social media and has claimed the prestigious Ballon d’Or for himself ahead of Monday’s big ceremony. The Brazilian hasn’t been nominated for the Golden Ball but has posted a picture of himself holding the famous trophy on Instagram. Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal are the two favourites for the award.

The 2025 Ballon d'Or looks set to go to either Dembele or Yamal after both players enjoyed stunning seasons in 2024-25. Dembele was in inspirational form as he fired PSG to four trophies, including a first ever Champions League triumph. Meanwhile, Yamal was integral for Barcelona and ended the campaign with La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup titles.

Richarlison's Ballon d'Or rant

Richarlison made his feelings about the Ballon d'Or particularly clear last year after seeing Rodri pip Brazil team-mate Vinicius Jr to the prestigious prize. The Tottenham star raged on Instagram: "All of us who live football eagerly await the individual awards each season. Today, all Brazilians who love football woke up expecting to see another player from our country win an award for the best in the world after so long. Unfortunately, for reasons that no one can understand, the award did not come. And don’t get me wrong, Rodri is a great player who deserves to be among the best. But Vini not winning the Ballon d’Or was embarrassing, and the only one who lost today was football. I remember Vini saying that his dream was to see the whole of Brazil cheering for him. And that day was today! ou are a giant and the best in the world, kid! And no trophy will change that. Keep going and never shut up! We’re together."
