Bangladesh aim to put collapse behind them and challenge Sri Lanka

The visitors need to win at the Khettarama on Saturday if they are to force the ODI series into a decider

Madushka Balasuriya04-Jul-2025Big picture: SL will look to guard against complacencyThe only way from here is up. Just a bad day at the office. A freak occurrence. The only important result is the next one. These are probably some of the self-soothing platitudes those in the Bangladesh camp might be telling themselves after their calamitous display with the bat in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. Seven wickets for five runs, from 100 for 1 to 105 for 8 – a simple fact that there is no hiding from. But for that self-soothing to truly take effect, they might need to pick themselves off the mat, take a cold and hard look at their performance, and maybe understand that there was more good than bad.Or rather, understand that on most days, the bad will never be quite . After all, they had restricted a fairly robust Sri Lanka batting line-up to just 244 – a score that needed yet another rescue act from captain cool Charith Asalanka to attain, and one that seemed at least 40 runs below par. Then with the bat, Tanzid Hasan, during his 61-ball 62, made the surface look what it was: a bit sticky but any demons firmly in slumber.Related

In truth, this was simply something that happens in sport every once so often, where one team performs at a level well above average, and another plunges to new depths of mediocrity; Sri Lanka were electric in the field, while some Bangladesh batters missed straight deliveries. That is the barebones reality. So while Bangladesh might do well not to dwell too much on their performance, Sri Lanka would do similarly well not to get carried away. The emphatic nature of the end result obscured some less-than-illustrious batting from the top order, while their bowling – particularly from the seamers – lacked the menace and tenacity of their Bangladesh counterparts.Sri Lanka may also wonder why the promised seamer- and-batter-friendly surface in Colombo never transpired. They had stacked their side with three seamers, but by the end of the game, both of Kamindu Mendis’ arms were getting more of a workout than any of Milan Rathnayake, Asitha Fernando or Eshan Malinga.Bangladesh, too, had opted for three seamers, and it will be interesting to see if both sides persevere with that strategy. But in any eventuality, a reversion to the mean for one – or both – of these sides, might mean that the second ODI on Saturday might just end up being the close contest the first had promised for long periods, before veering off the rails so dramatically.Jaker Ali took on Sri Lanka’s bowling in the first game•AFP/Getty ImagesRecent formSri Lanka WWWWL
Bangladesh LLLLLLIn the spotlight: Kamindu Mendis and Jaker AliOn the fourth ball Kamindu Mendis faced in the first ODI on Wednesday, he looked to drive Taskin Ahmed on the up, only to end up chipping a simple catch to mid-off. Fast forward a few hours, and off the fourth delivery he bowled, Kamindu snuck one through Towhid Hridoy’s defences before proceeding to grab two more wickets to instigate Bangladesh’s collapse. Those three wickets also came courtesy both arms, and considering the action he was imparting on the ball, it seems Kamindu has been working on his bowling a little more as of late. In a format where versatility is so crucial, Kamindu’s increasing ability to impact in every area of the game could prove invaluable.During his knock of 51 from 64 balls, with just the tail for company, Jaker Ali may have, for a fleeting moment, thought about achieving an impossible chase. In the end, he fell short, but for the hour or so that he was out in the middle, Sri Lanka – despite being so close to victory – couldn’t rest easy. But in taking on the bowling as comfortably as he did, Jaker once again showcased his ability to take hold of a game regardless of match state. For Bangladesh, the goal now should be to give him a platform to not just pull the side out of the mire, but also propel their innings to the types of totals modern ODIs demand.Dunith Wellalage could come in for Milan Rathnayake in the second ODI•AFP/Getty ImagesTeam newsSri Lanka are likely to go with same XI, though Dunith Wellalage could come in for Milan Rathnayake if the pitch looks to support spin similar to the first game.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Nishan Madushka, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Kamindu Mendis, 5 Charith Asalanka (capt), 6 Janith Liyanage, 7 Milan Rathnayake/Dunith Wellalage, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Eshan Malinga, 11 Asitha FernandoRishad Hossain missed the first ODI with fever, and could be back in contention. If so, he might replace Tanvir Islam, who seemed to be struggling with his calf.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Parvez Hossain, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Litton Das (wk), 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mehidy Hasan Miraz (capt), 7 Jaker Ali, 8 Tanzim Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Tanvir Islam/Rishad Hossain, 11 Mustafizur RahmanPitch and conditionsPeriods of rain are anticipated across the day, so we could expect some stoppages. As for the pitch, after an early period where Bangladesh’s seamers prospered in the first ODI, by the end, it had begun to revert to a more traditional Khettarama surface – though it was still far from being unplayable. However, there seems to be a concerted effort to make surfaces more batting-friendly, so batting first could once more seem to the play.Among active players, Taskin Ahmed has the most wickets in ODIs between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh•Associated PressStats and trivia Of Asalanka’s five ODI hundreds, four have required him to come out to bat inside the first 15 overs. Sri Lanka have never lost to Bangladesh in 11 ODIs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Wanindu Hasaranga is one run away from 1000 in ODIs. Whenever he scores that, he’ll become the 11th Sri Lankan to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the format, having got to the latter landmark in the first ODI. Taskin Ahmed’s 26 wickets are the most by an active bowler in ODIs between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. That is also the third-highest after Lasith Malinga (27) and Muthiah Muralidaran (31).Quote”We were building a good partnership. We were a bit unfortunate because they took a brilliant catch, and then the run-out happened. That was a turning point. If we could have added 30-40 more runs, the match would have been much easier.”

Cristiano Ronaldo calls two former Real Madrid team-mates in bid to convince duo to join him at Al-Nassr in Saudi Pro League

  • Ronaldo's team finished trophyless this term
  • The Portuguese wants a Madrid reunion next season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly reacted to Al-Nassr's Saudi Cup final defeat to Al-Hilal by calling up his former Real Madrid team-mates Nacho Fernandez and Casemiro in an effort to convince them to join him in Saudi Arabia. Both players face uncertain club futures and Marca report that Ronaldo is personally taking the lead in trying to lure them to the Saudi Pro League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

An emotional Ronaldo was in tears when his side lost to Al-Hilal this week, as the Saudi Cup final defeat consigned his team to a trophyless season. The 39-year-old clearly believes that the way to rectify that next season will be to move for more experienced players, who have a pedigree in winning trophies.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Nacho captained Real Madrid to the club's 15th European Cup win on Saturday evening, with the 34-year-old picking up his sixth winners' medal. That means Nacho, plus team-mates Luca Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal join Madrid legend Gento as the only players to have won six European Cups – one more than Ronaldo.

  • Getty

WHAT NEXT FOR NACHO AND CASEMIRO?

With Nacho coming to the end of his contract at the Bernabeu, he looks set to leave Madrid, but has been strongly linked with a move to the MLS, which could scupper Ronaldo's plans of luring him to Riyadh. Casemiro could be the more likely player of the two to make the switch, given his poor form for Manchester United this season as the Red Devils get set for a summer clearout.

Passion or provocation: did Kohli mock Ashwin?

When asked what was going on, Ashwin’s response was: “I just play with passion, so does he”

We just play with passion – Ashwin on Kohli send-off

Did Virat Kohli mock R Ashwin’s controversial mankading of Jos Buttler earlier in the season after he caught his Test team-mate at the long-on boundary? Paul Collingwood, former England captain and a staunch critic of the Buttler run-out, certainly thought so.

With 27 required off the last over against Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab captain Ashwin hit the first ball for a six. The next only made it as far as Kohli at the long-on boundary. Kohli gesticulated after catching the ball before moving his right hand – which held the ball – behind his body, an action not too dissimilar to flicking the bails off behind you when you effect the mankad.Virat Kohli is over the moon as a Kings XI Punjab wicket falls•BCCIAshwin walked off, and proceeded to fling his gloves in anger upon reaching the dugout, which may or may not have been a reaction to Kohli’s antics. He was later asked about what had been going on between him and Kohli – Ashwin has been animated whenever his side has got Kohli out – and replied, “I just play with passion, so does he. That’s it. As simple as that.”No current India cricketer has openly come out in support of Ashwin – or made any comment one way or another – on the run-out debate, whereas current England cricketers – and others – have taken to Twitter to criticise him. The support for Ashwin has only come from former Indian cricketers.Ashwin did pull out of his delivery during his match against Delhi Capitals with Shikhar Dhawan, the non-striker, not leaving the crease. When Ashwin ran in to bowl the next ball, Dhawan danced outside the crease but with the bat inside it. Kohli reacted similarly when Sunil Narine pulled out of his delivery stride in another match, but that wasn’t with the intention of running the non-striker out. Kohli squatted low to send the message that he was doing all he could to keep his bat inside the crease.

No Australian players in Women's T20 Challenge

While stars from England, New Zealand and West Indies feature in this year’s tournament, the likes of Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry will miss it

No players from Australia and South Africa are in the three squads that will take part in the four-match Women’s T20 Challenge, which will be held in Jaipur from May 6 to 11 on the sidelines of the IPL playoffs.South Africa’s players are unavailable because of their home series against Pakistan, which begins on May 6. The surprise, however, is in the absence of Australia’s cricketers. The world leaders in the women’s game, Australia had fielded the largest overseas contingent in last year’s one-off exhibition match, including stars such as Meg Lanning, Megan Schutt, Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney.Only last month, Cricket Australia’s female high-performance manager Shawn Flegler had told that the board would support Australians participating in any exhibition matches played this year. “It’s a great opportunity for the players, and to see a women’s IPL get off the ground would be a great thing for the game more broadly,” Flegler had said.A report on CA’s website yesterday, headlined “Aussies in frame for women’s IPL games”, suggested the players would take part in the tournament. However, the report also confirmed that Australia’s pre-Ashes camp would begin in Brisbane on May 13, two days after the final of the Jaipur tournament. For the upcoming Indian competition, 39 players, including internationals, have been divided among three teams – Supernovas, Trailblazers, and Velocity. The teams will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj respectively. Some of the top players from England and New Zealand will be present and, unlike last year, when only players from Australia, New Zealand and England made up the overseas contingent, the upcoming edition will feature three West Indians in Stafanie Taylor, Hayley Matthews and Shakera Selman, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be represented by Chamari Atapattu and Jahanara Alam respectively.Current India women head coach WV Raman has been named the coach of Harmanpreet’s Supernovas, while fielding coach Biju George will be in charge of Mandhana’s Trailblazers. Former India women’s captain Mamatha Maben, who had applied for the India women head coach’s position after the exit of Ramesh Powar last year, will coach Raj’s Velocity.Supernovas: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Anuja Patil, Arundhati Reddy, Jemimah Rodrigues, Mansi Joshi, Poonam Yadav, Priya Punia, Radha Yadav, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Chamari Atapattu*, Lea Tahuhu*, Sophie Devine*, Natalie Sciver*Trailblazers: Smriti Mandhana (c), Bharti Fulmali, Dayalan Hemalatha, Deepti Sharma, Harleen Deol, Jasia Akhtar, Jhulan Goswami, R Kalpana (wk), Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Suzie Bates*, Sophie Ecclestone*, Shakera Selman*, Stafanie Taylor*Velocity: Mithali Raj (c), Devika Vaidya, Ekta Bisht, Komal Zanzad, Shafali Verma, Shikha Pandey, Sushma Verma (wk), Sushri Dibyadarshini, Veda Krishnamurthy, Amelia Kerr*, Danielle Wyatt*, Hayley Matthews*, Jahanara Alam*

South Africa wary of resurgent Pakistan – Reeza Hendricks

The opener says that a spot in the World Cup squad will be “a dream”, but he insists that his focus is much more short-term

Liam Brickhill21-Jan-2019South Africa are wary of a resurgent Pakistan team that cruised to a five-wicket win in the first of five one-day internationals in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.”We know Pakistan is a good one-day outfit,” opener Reeza Hendricks, who contributed 45 to an opening stand of 82 in the first ODI, said. “They’ve been performing really well over the years in one-day cricket, so we’re quite wary and know that they’re a good team. They proved it by beating us in P.E.”Hendricks’ opening partnership with Hashim Amla allowed South Africa to set a platform, but a sluggish track and a committed bowling effort meant the hosts were never able to substantially up the run rate. Hendricks struck at 67.16 during his knock, and after him neither Amla or Rassie van der Dussen were able to raise their strike rates as high as a run a ball. Although David Miller capped the innings with a 12-ball 16, South Africa’s 266 for 2 was not enough to challenge a Pakistan top order that took more risks but completed the chase with five balls to spare.”In our minds, we thought it would be a good score,” Hendricks said. “There were slower conditions in the day, and it did quicken up at night. In our minds, we thought we went about it the right way. The batters that were in the middle felt it was a good score.”We’ve had a good discussion around the PE game, what went wrong and what we can learn from. It’s been those discussions we’ve had, and a good training session today ahead of tomorrow’s game.”With the World Cup five months away, the tournament is providing increasing context to the one-day cricket being played in the interim and every member of South Africa’s squad will see the series against Pakistan as a chance to stake a claim. Rassie van der Dussen made an immediate impact on debut with his 93, but his performance did not come as a surprise to Hendricks, who has shared a dressing room with van der Dussen with the Lions franchise for several seasons.”I was quite proud to see him make his debut and contributing the way he has,” Hendricks said of van der Dussen. “Obviously disappointed that he couldn’t get to his three-figure mark, but at the end of the day he played really well to contribute as well as he did. I’ve played a couple of seasons now with him. I know his capabilities and seen him improve over the years. He showed what he’s about to deserve a spot in the team.”Hendricks admitted that a spot in the World Cup squad would be “a dream” and would mean “a hell of a lot” to him, but he insisted that his focus is much more short-term.”I’m not looking at it like that,” he said. “Yes, the World Cup is around the corner but we’ve got a series on hand now at the moment and this is an opportunity that we get as well. We take it as it comes. Personally, I’m taking it game by game, trying to contribute as well as I can to each game and every opportunity I get, and the rest will take care of itself. I’m not looking too far ahead, or looking who’s around me, because at the end of the day if I don’t get selected I know the player next to me and the guys that are going will do the job, and I back them 100 percent.”Aside from individual aspirations, the remaining nine ODIs scheduled for South Africa before the World Cup also provide an opportunity to fine-tune ‘Vision 2019’, the team’s blueprint for what they believe will bring success at the tournament.”We’re quite close,” Hendricks said. “I think we’re on the right track. We’ve had a good chat in how to go about it and how we’re playing, and as a unit we’re all buying into it. We’re doing good things. There are still a couple of months to try and get it right for the World Cup.”

Timber has taken in a long road to recovery since then, with Mikel Arteta saying when asked to deliver an update on the buccaneering full-back and when he may be seen again: “Still he’s got a few steps to make. He needs to play at least a game with the 23s. We’re going to have an in house game too. He’s done everything in training now it’s about getting him match fit.”

Pandya asked to prove fitness in Ranji clash

Allrounder will not travel to New Zealand for the three one-dayers in December

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2018

Pandya likely to play for Baroda

Hardik Pandya won’t be a part of the India A squad for the three one-dayers in New Zealand as he is yet to fully recover from a back injury that he picked up at the Asia Cup in September. Selected in the India A squad last month in a bid to give him game time before the second half of the Test series in Australia, Pandya has now instead been asked to rest and continue regaining strength by the medical staff at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.Pandya’s next competitive fixture is likely to be the sixth-round Ranji Trophy clash for Baroda against Mumbai starting December 14. Meanwhile, the selectors are likely to pick Pandya’s replacement from the four-day squad that is currently on tour, with the third unofficial Test starting November 30 in Whangarei.Pandya last played a first-class match for his state, Baroda, against Gujarat during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season.

Yuvraj boost for Punjab

Yuvraj Singh, who had initially relinquished his spot in the Punjab side to make way for youngsters, has returned to the squad for their clash against Delhi at the Feroz Shah Kotla. In the absence of Yuvraj, Punjab ended up conceding the first-innings lead in both their drawn matches, against Andhra and Madhya Pradesh. Yuvraj is also set to be available for Punjab’s next two matches against Himachal Pradesh (December 6-9) and Tamil Nadu (December 14-17).Yuvraj was released by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the IPL auction in January. He recently featured in Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, aggregating 264 runs in seven innings, with a best of 96.

Armaan Jaffer vaults into Mumbai squad

Twenty-year-old Armaan Jaffer, the nephew of former India batsman Wasim, has forced his way back into Mumbai’s squad for their next game against Gujarat at home. Armaan earned his spot back with an unbeaten 300 off 367 he scored against Saurashtra in the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy at Wankhede Stadium nearly ten days ago. His knock, studded with 26 fours and ten sixes, helped Mumbai to an innings-and-230-run victory.Armaan made his first-class debut for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu in October 2016 and played only two more matches that season before being dropped. He missed most of last season because of a knee injury that kept him out of action for more than a year.Mumbai continue to be without Shreyas Iyer who is in New Zealand as part of the A squad for three one-dayers to be played next month.

Vinay back for Karnataka; Binny dropped

Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar, who had missed the team’s previous match against Mumbai in Belgaum because of a neck injury, will return to lead them against Maharashtra in Mysuru. Allrounder Stuart Binny, however, has been dropped after managing only 53 runs in four innings and taking one wicket in two Ranji games this season.

Onus on South Africa's batsmen to settle into 'Vision 2019'

Time is running out for Elgar, Hendricks and Zondo to make their mark, especially now that du Plessis has recovered from injury

The Preview by Liam Brickhill05-Oct-2018

AFP

Big PictureSouth Africa have walked a narrow line between tryouts and continuity in this series, and they are clearly still in phase one of Vision 2019 : experimentation. The first two ODIs against Zimbabwe saw new players in pivotal positions and old players trialled in unfamiliar ones.In both games, stand-in captain JP Duminy had dropped down the order to offer the more inexperienced batsmen in the squad the chance to close games out themselves. Neither opportunity was taken, however, and the hosts slipped to 96 for 5 in the first match and 101 for 7 in the second as the visiting Zimbabwe bowlers exploited conditions heavily weighted in favour of the ball. The early-season pitches have played wildly out of character and this hasn’t been a profitable series for batsmen. Steyn’s fifty is the only one to have been scored from either side, and the South African bowling attack has flattened Zimbabwe’s batsmen in both games, bowling them out for 117 and 78.Steyn has shown he still has serious pace, topping out at around 145kph in the second game – a number all the more terrifying given how badly the pitch was behaving – and Imran Tahir’s series strike rate is an eye-watering 8.2. Add Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and Andile Phehlukwayo to the mix, and it will be an achievement if Zimbabwe are even able to last 50 overs on Saturday, given their struggles.South Africa’s attack is settled, and it’s the batting that has yet to come to grips with Vision 2019. South Africa made have it clear all along that they were willing, if a little reluctantly, to sacrifice results for this vision but time is running out for the likes of Dean Elgar, Reeza Hendricks and Khaya Zondo to make their mark, especially now that Faf du Plessis has recovered from the shoulder injury that had kept him out of the first two games. They should at least have a more placid track on which to stage their third audition of the series.Zimbabwe will be hoping that the pressure to perform continues to tell on South Africa’s middle order. They are on a nine-game losing streak, and while their bowlers have been able to put them in strong positions in the last two games, their batting has failed completely.Form guideSouth Africa: WWLLW (Last five completed matches, most recent first)Zimbabwe: LLLLLIn the spotlightSouth Africa’s batting tyros have one more chance to get things right before the series switches format and the hosts settle on their personnel for the trip to Australia at the end of the month. Aiden Markram has got himself in, and then out, in both games and though everyone has shown positive intent, stickability has generally been lacking.Zimbabwe’s batting engine room has completely failed to fire so far. The visitors tend to do well with the bat when the middle order has a cushion, but Solomon Mire has struggled since his return from injury and captain Hamilton Masakadza, like Markram, has done the hard work against the new ball only to give it away. If Masakadza and Mire can lay a platform, the job becomes much easier for everyone following them.AFP

Team newsTabraiz Shamsi is the only member of South Africa’s squad not to have played a game so far, so he could well slot in to the XI along with the returning du Plessis. Imran Tahir has spoken about his excitement at the possibility of playing alongside Shamsi, but conditions will likely impact whether South Africa see fit to pick both wristspinners.South Africa (possible): 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Reeza Hendricks/Khaya Zondo, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 JP Duminy (capt), 7 Christiaan Jonker, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiZimbabwe may well give a game to Ryan Murray, who was part of the squad sent to the Africa T20 last month and showed some form with 46 against Northerns and 77 against South West Districts. They, too, may also consider bringing left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza back into the XI, depending on conditions.Zimbabwe (possible): 1 Hamilton Masakadza (capt), 2 Solomon Mire, 3 Craig Ervine, 4 Brendan Taylor(wk), 5 Sean Williams, 6 Ryan Murray, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Wellington Masakadza/Donald Tiripano, 9 Brandon Mavuta, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Tendai ChataraPitch and conditionsPaarl is about 50 kilometres from the coast, and South Africa’s coastal grounds are not affected by the winter break as those inland are, so the Boland Park strip should be a good one. Winters are wet in the Western Cape and the early-season pitches can hold together a little better. Furthermore, Boland Cricket chief executive James Fortuin has promised a “run-fest” for this game after two low-scoring matches, and the ground has already been used this season for the Africa T20. Those results suggest a good pitch, with the possibility that spin could be important: several teams in the Africa T20 chose to open the bowling with spin at one end when playing in Paarl.Though there has been some rain – and even snow – around in the mountains of the Cape, summer is starting to arrive and Saturday should be warm and dry.Stats and triviaBoland Park in Paarl was the ground at which Wasim Akram became the first man to take 500 ODI wickets. The last time South Africa played here, AB de Villers smashed 176 (his 25th and final ODI ton) and they amassed 353 for 6 against Bangladesh, the highest score on this ground. While there have been three 300-plus scores at this ground, it has also seen spectacular batting collapses. Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 43, pursuing South Africa’s 301 for 8, in 2012, while in 2003 Canada were bowled out for 36 by Sri Lanka, the second lowest ODI score of all time.Quotes”We have spent plenty of time on the pitch, and lots of runs are expected. We are used to big matches and the wicket looks good. We will have a proper one-day wicket.”
“I thought Kimberley was poor, and we thought it would get better coming to Bloem. But we are hoping Paarl is going to be the best one.”

"Top class" 21 y/o Rangers player close to sealing permanent Ibrox exit

A “top class” Rangers player is believed to be on the verge of leaving Ibrox for good in the January transfer window, according to a new update.

    Rangers transfer news

The Gers enjoyed a routine 5-0 win at home to Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup fourth round on Sunday, but there is also plenty of focus on potential January transfers in the next couple of weeks.

Allan Campbell has been mentioned as an option for Rangers in the current window, with the Scot currently on loan at Charlton Athletic from Luton Town. The Hatters won’t stand in his way if the right offer comes along, with the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibernian also mentioned as options for him.

Luton Town'sAllanCampbellin action with Reading's Jeff Hendrick

Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron has also been linked with a switch to the Gers in January, with the 22-year-old considered an exciting long-term option for the Scottish Premiership giants. In fact, they are even said to be in advanced talks to complete that signing, suggesting a move could happen sooner rather than later.

There have also been rumours linking Rangers players leaving the club this month, with Vaclav Cerny thought to be of interest to Premier League side West Ham. The 27-year-old would be a big loss for Philippe Clement, having scored nine goals in the league this season, although the Hammers may at least wait until the summer due to the complications of cancelling his current loan deal.

"Top class" Rangers player set to leave

According to Football Insider, Alex Lowry is set to leave Rangers in the January window, with League One side Wycombe Wanderers “closing in on a deal” to snap up the 21-year-old. The youngster is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of this season, meaning that this month is the Gers’ final opportunity to receive a fee for him, rather than lose him on a free transfer come the summer.

    Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry.

Selling Lowry this month feels like the most logical decision for everyone concerned, even though he has been described as “top class” by Rory Wilson in the past, with Michael Stewart also waxing lyrical over him, saying: “You only need to watch the kid for a few minutes to realise that he’s a proper football player.

“Really intelligent, two good feet, good balance, and he’s always looking to make things happen. His work rate, closing down. Constantly getting himself in a position to receive the ball as well.”

Lowry hasn’t featured at all for Rangers this season, and only 14 appearances have come his way in total for the club, having broken through after years in the club’s youth system.
