£50k-p/w star will "definitely" be sold as Newcastle ready summer move

Newcastle United could be ready to turn their long-standing interest into a bid this summer, with one star now certain to leave his current club.

Bruno Guimaraes' future up in the air

The future of Newcastle's star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes remains unclear heading into the summer transfer window, a fact which will cause concern among the Newcastle fanbase. Eddie Howe is desperate to keep the Brazilian, but has made no promises should offers come in.

kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion

“My intention would be to keep Bruno for as long as we possibly can because I can,” Howe said. “But I can never make guarantees because that would be absolutely foolish of me.

"I’ve been in football long enough to know you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. But he’s an integral part of the team and playing really well at the moment. A lot will depend on our ambitions and where the club is going in the foreseeable future. We need to show we’re moving forward.”

Guimaraes has a release clause believed to be set at £100m, and is attracting interest from across the Premier League, with recent reports claiming that a fee of around £80m will be enough to see him leave Tyneside with PSG, Manchester City and Arsenal all interested.

It is believed that Newcastle need to bring in up to £50m to comply with the Premier League's financial fair play rules, but the sale of Bruno for a £55m profit would allow them to spend more this summer. And they appear to have already identified a replacement.

"Priceless" player set to be sold

That comes in the form of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is set to be sold by the Blues this summer. Gallagher wants to stay at Chelsea, and Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino also wants him to stay, having utilised him a lot this season.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

"I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team," said the Chelsea manager after their win at Selhurst Park in February.

"He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It's priceless to have a player like him."

However, he is out of contract next season and is yet to agree fresh terms on his current £50,000 a week deal, while his homegrown status makes him a more valuable asset for Chelsea to offload as they look to comply with their own financial fair play issues.

Because of this, Football Insider claim that he will "definitely" be sold this summer and have added Newcastle to the list of suitors chasing his signature alongside Tottenham. The Magpies have previously seen efforts to lure him out of Stamford Bridge fail but are now "weighing up" a move once more in a bid to bolster their midfield ranks.

It remains to be seen whether they firm up their interest into a formal bid, but given their longstanding interest in the midfielder, it is not an unlikely outcome.

'This is our summer'

The Railways ditched and the queues were long, but Kent and Surrey’s fans enjoyed the cricket and dealt with all the inconveniences with humour

Stuart Croll27-Jun-2011Choice of game
A progressive and wise move by Kent CC to play this derby in Beckenham as there can’t be a better ground closer to the border of both counties. What the board of Kent CC could not have envisaged when making their decision was that the South Eastern Railways would decide today was the day to close the line to Beckenham for engineering works. But despite this inconvenience a healthy crowd was in attendance.Key performer
How I wished the key performer would be Robert Key. Alas the cricket-comedy gods did not want to play along so the Kent captain contributed just one run. The dismissal of Key and fellow opener Joe Denly brought together Azhar Mahmood and Martin van Jaarsveld whose big-hitting and astute running set up Kent’s victory. van Jaarsveld edges it as key performer, thanks to his higher score. One thing I’d change
The queues. There were lengthy queues to enter the ground, queues at the bar and queues for the toilets – yes even the gents toilets. Now the British love to queue but these queues were at times so lengthy there were times when we thought we had been transported to Glastonbury rather than watching the cricket.Interplay I enjoyed
After the opening four overs of the chase, Kent were struggling with two wickets down. One fan was so annoyed he shouted: “Come on, Kent, this is like watching Geoffrey Boycott.” Another fan replied: “Oi, this is Kent, show some respect. It’s like watching Chris Tavare.” Much hilarity ensued, and by the time it had subsided, Kent were ahead of the run-rate.Wow moment
The heatwave. With so many Twenty20 games falling foul of the weather, this season it was just great to enjoy a game knowing it would reach its natural conclusion. The “you-can’t-be-serious” moment
Considering it is the middle of Wimbledon fortnight, the John McEnroe moment was when, in between overs, the PA announcer broadcast congratulations to a couple from South Carolina who were spending their honeymoon at the cricket. The entire crowd was aghast wondering why this couple would rather spend their honeymoon in Beckenham watching Twenty20 cricket than holidaying in Hawaii, Mauritius, Las Vegas or any other place on the planet.Shot of the day
A six from Mahmood was so huge it would have disrupted the train-service into Beckenham Junction had they been running today.Player watch
Despite being on the losing side, Tom Maynard again showed his class in this form of the game. Surrey have lost a few players to England this summer, and many are predicting Jason Roy to be next, but Maynard continues to impress and may just overtake the youngster in England’s plans.Crowd meter
There was good-natured fun between both sets of fans, which, considering the queues and the heatwave, was better than should have been expected. As one wag in the public bar said: “Remember today – this is our summer.”Marks out of 10
Kent won quite easily, but for a while this was a close-fought encounter. Also, it was played in front of a big crowd under lovely sunshine – so eight out of ten.Overall
On the plus side, it was a good Twenty20 game with plenty of sixes. Also, Kent CC should be congratulated for moving the game from Canterbury to Beckenham. It’s such a shame that National Rail closed the line in and out of Beckenham Junction on the very day the game was arranged. Is it too much to ask for a bit of common sense to be shown? That aside, an enjoyable day out, and a good game.

Celtic plotting move to sign £10,000-a-week player who’s pushing to leave

da prosport bet: Celtic are plotting a move to sign a "world-class" talent who is earning £10,000-a-week with his current club.

Celtic eye new goalkeeper

da dobrowin: Earlier this year, Celtic no.1 Joe Hart announced that he would be retiring at the end of the Scottish Premiership season, ending his career on a high after the Hoops clinched yet another title.

"I wanted to get the message out, as of June I am going to stop playing football", Hart explained in February. "This is something that I have thought about for a while, there's no right or wrong time is there?

"There is obviously a conversation around the goalkeeping position for next season and I think it's really important that with the blessing of the club we get the message out and it takes one thing out of what people are going to speculate over.

"I have gone down every avenue to keep myself in the best possible shape to give my all on game day and I do really think I am at that peak, but I am aware time waits for no man and I don't want my body to be retiring me. That was one of the key factors, thinking I can smash through the finish line."

Joe Hart

Following news of Hart's impending exit, the Scottish champions have been linked with a number of new keepers heading into the summer. Celtic have reportedly made an offer of around £6.4m for the services of Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who has been a long-term target for the Scottish outfit. Southampton shot-stopper Alex McCarthy is also being monitored ahead of him becoming a free agent this summer.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough shot-stopper Tom Glover appears to be of interest, while Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly is said to be on Celtic’s list of summer targets, although rivals Rangers are also keen.

Now, however, another name, arguably of a much higher quality, has seemingly caught the eye of those at Celtic Park.

Celtic plot move to sign £10,000-a-week player

According to Football Insider, Celtic are long-term admirers of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and are plotting their move. Crucially, it is added that the goalkeeper views this summer as the ideal time to move if he is to become the first choice at another club and also the first choice for the Republic of Ireland.

Kelleher, who earns £10,000-a-week on his current deal, which runs until 2026, was handed a more regular starting berth for Liverpool across the 2023/24 season following injury issues with Alisson. He made 26 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, keeping five clean sheets in the process and there have been claims recently that he is pushing to leave Merseyside.

Said displays earned the 25-year-old high praise from Liverpool and Netherlands stopper Virgil van Dijk. Speaking alongside Kelleher after being named man of the match in the League Cup final versus Chelsea, the Dutchman said:

“He should have got it. I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think. I have always said he is world class and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”

Mark Robinson enters frame for Warwickshire head coach role

Mark Robinson, the former head coach of England women, could be set for a return to cricket, after emerging as a strong candidate for the vacant role of Warwickshire head coach.ESPNcricinfo understands that Robinson, who was head coach when England Women won the World Cup in 2017, has a second interview with the club this week.Mark Ramprakash, Graeme Welch and Donovan Miller, who were among those shortlisted for the role, were not invited back for a second interview. As well as his success with England Women, Robinson was head coach when Sussex won the County Championship in 2005 and 2007, the Friends Provident Trophy in 2006, the T20 competition in 2009 and the Pro 40 League in 2008 and 2009.During this period, he gained a strong reputation, not just for his ability to coax performances from his players but for signing players of previously untapped potential. Jofra Archer and Ollie Robinson (no relation) both joined the club on his watch. He also gained admiration at Sussex and with England for the manner in which he helped Michael Yardy and Sarah Taylor through tough periods in their personal lives.Robinson’s England side also reached the final of the World T20 in November 2018 but, less than a year later, he was sacked after his side were overwhelmed by Australia in the Ashes. He has not held a high-profile role in the game since. The Warwickshire job became available after Jim Troughton was sacked at the end of the 2020 season. The positions of the remainder of the coaching staff – Tony Frost (batting), Welch (bowling) and Ian Westwood (second XI) – are understood to be safe. Paul Farbrace remains as director of cricket. An appointment is expected before Christmas.

Nottinghamshire consolidate top spot as Joe Clarke's form continues

Winless Derbyshire fall short in chase despite Wayne Madsen’s half-century

Nottinghamshire moved four points clear at the top of the North Group when they beat Derbyshire by 13 runs in the T20 Blast at Trent Bridge.Joe Clarke scored 57 off 35 balls, his third fifty-plus score in the competition, and Alex Hales hit 49 from 32 as the Outlaws powered to 198 for 6 from 20 overs.Wayne Madsen led a spirited chase with 68 from 46 balls while Matt Critchley hit 44 from 28 but Jake Ball bowled well under pressure to take 2 for 36 as the Falcons closed on 185 for 6 and are still without a win.It was no surprise when the Outlaws elected to bat first and although they lost Chris Nash in the second over when he chipped to deep midwicket to give Dustin Melton his first T20 wicket, Hales and Clarke laid the platform for another imposing total.Hales hit four consecutive fours off Michael Cohen as the Outlaws took 65 from the Powerplay before Clarke pulled and drove Alex Hughes for the first sixes of the innings. The pair added 93 in 8 overs before Hales skied Hughes to long on and although Clarke was dropped on 50 by Critchley running in from long-off, he pulled Hughes to long-on in the next over.Despite that lapse, the Falcons had managed to keep their discipline in the field but the Outlaws moved into overdrive as 45 came from the last four overs. Dan Christian smashed Madsen for successive sixes before he failed to clear long off but Tom Moores pulled the fifth ball of the over for another maximum. Moores was bowled aiming a big pull at Melton who conceded only three from the 18th over but Ben Duckett took consecutive boundaries off Cohen before Steven Mullaney dispatched the penultimate ball of the innings for six.The Falcons lost Luis Reece first ball, bowled by Imad Wasim, and Billy Godleman was lbw sweeping Matthew Carter but Madsen and Leus du Plooy lifted them to 56 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay.Mullaney had du Plooy caught at mid-off but with Madsen astutely finding the gaps, the Falcons were still in the chase on 92 for 3 at the halfway point. Critchley swung Imad for six over midwicket and cut Ball for two fours but the seamer responded by yorking Madsen with the last ball of the 14th over. The Falcons needed a big over and Hughes delivered in the 16th, pulling Samit Patel for six and sweeping him for two fours. Ball returned to have Critchley lbw and bowled a superb penultimate over which cost only five leaving the Falcons needing 23 off the last over which proved beyond them.

Nathan Buck rocks Bears as Northamptonshire claim third successive win

Nathan Buck’s interventions either side of the interval helped Northamptonshire to a 38-run win over Birmingham Bears and gave them a third straight win in the Vitality Blast to extend their lead at the top of the Central Group.Buck swung 16 in eight balls from the final 10 deliveries of the Northamptonshire innings to lift them to 158 for 7 having been sent in, before his double-wicket maiden in the fourth over of the chase rocked the Bears who never recovered and were bowled out for just 120 in the final over. That Northamptonshire would win so handsomely did not seem likely when they were 135 for 7 in the 19th over. But Buck pulled Henry Brookes over midwicket for six and steered Olly Stone wide of third man for four.He then removed both openers with slower balls as Ian Bell and Ed Pollock swung to Ben Sanderson on the edge of the ring. And when Graeme White bowled Adam Hose, with a beauty that turned just enough, and dismissed Will Rhodes reverse sweeping, the Bears were out of the chase at 38 for 5 after 8.1 overs.Buck’s late runs grabbed the momentum at the halfway stage after Northamptonshire had drifted badly having made 66 for 2 in the Powerplay. But only 57 runs came in the next 11 overs. They were dragged back by left-arm wristspinner Jake Lintott, 27, who began his career in the Somerset age-groups but here was only playing his sixth professional match. He took 2 for 18 from his four overs, the best figures of his short career.Jeetan Patel’s offspin was also typically miserly as he took 2 for 27. Patel removed Paul Stirling for 14 but he and Richard Levi, who made 35 in 28 balls, helped Northamptonshire to a promising start.Levi struck Stone, back on his old home ground, over long-on and cover for two sixes in Stone’s first over. Tim Bresnan was then pulled over midwicket as his first over was taken for 17 before Levi backed away to cut Brookes for six over third man. But he miscued another pull and was taken by Sam Hain running to his left from deep square in the final over of the Powerplay. The hosts then stalled. Josh Cobb lifted Lintott to deep cover for 1 and Alex Wakely pulled at Bresnan, missed and was bowled for 6.Ricardo Vasconcelos captained the side in the absence of Adam Rossington – rested after a blow to the hand on Sunday – and began a rebuilding job. He cut and swept Patel and then drove and cut Lintott for fours on the way to 34 in 29 balls. But advancing at Lintott, was beaten by a flatter delivery and comfortably stumped by Vikai Kelley, an under-17 wicketkeeper from Staffordshire deputising for the ill Michael Burgess. Kelley also stumped Gareth Berg.Vasconcelos’ departure began a slide but Buck’s cameo and a flat six over cover from White brought 23 runs from the final 11 balls of the innings to swing the match decisively Northamptonshire’s way.

Laura Marsh announces retirement after Hundred delay

Former England allrounder Laura Marsh has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket.Marsh, 33, called an end to her international career late last year after being left out of the England squad and has now cited the postponed launch of the Hundred as one of the key reasons behind her full retirement. She had been due to play for Oval Invincibles in the new format but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the ECB to move the opening season to 2021.”I have made the decision to retire from all forms of cricket. With the cancellation of The Hundred competition this year, I feel that it is the right time to hang up the boots,” Marsh wrote on Twitter. “I want to say a huge thank you to all the teams and organisations I have represented over the years.”I owe a huge amount to both Kent & Sussex for the role they played in my development as a player.”Big thanks also to The Surrey Stars, Sydney Sixers, NSW Breakers and Otago Sparks. Every team I played for developed me as a player and a person and I am fortunate to have made some lifelong friends and memories over the years.”

Currently, Celtic are top of the Scottish Premiership, however, rivals Rangers have a game in hand and trail by just one point. It promises to be one of the closest title races in recent memory, however, attention behind the scenes at Parkhead appears to be turning towards the upcoming transfer window.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart will retire at the end of the campaign, leaving Celtic on the search for a new first-choice shot-stopper. There have been specific targets mentioned, such as Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, who the Hoops would love to sign.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Reds ‘keeper could be tempted to move to Glasgow, whereas Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir is seen as a potential alternative option. Whoever arrives to replace Hart may require a big transfer fee, and it looks as if Celtic are in a good position to do stump up the cash.

Guidi shares exciting Celtic transfer update

Journalist Guidi, talking to The Go Radio Football Show, relayed by 67 Hail Hail, was speaking about Celtic’s need for a new goalkeeper to replace Hart this summer. He said that the Hoops are “back” in the market to sign a player worth around £6m-£7m, should one emerge on their radar.

“I’ve said many times. I said it last season, if Celtic can find a Jack Butland scenario or another Joe Hart scenario where it’s a free transfer or a £1m quid transfer fee and then a nice fat contract, then go for it.

“But see if you need to spend £6m-£7m then go and do it. And I’ve been told that Celtic are back in that market.

“The days of this £3m almost like a ceiling, has been wiped out. If players become available at £6m-£7m then Celtic are very much back in the market at that level. And that’s the way it should be, particularly for a goalkeeper.”

This is an exciting update for the Hoops, showing that the funds are seemingly there at Parkhead for the club to splash the cash on new signings in the region of £6m-£7m, something that wasn't done this season.

Alongside a new goalkeeper, a winger and striker are also wanted by Rodgers and Celtic, so it could be a busy and expensive summer transfer window ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and Jota's big-money exit to Saudi Arabia last year alongside Matt O'Riley's possible departure could fund a number of incomings.

Harry Kane questions whether his critics 'really understand football' as England captain breaks silence on fitness concerns ahead of Euro 2024 semi-final with Netherlands

England captain Harry Kane has questioned whether his critics "really understand football" while addressing concerns over his fitness.

Kane has been struggling at Euro 2024Critics question his fitness levelsInsisted that he feels "better and sharper"WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane's performances for England at Euro 2024 have been under the spotlight. Although he scored the crucial winner against Slovakia in their last-16 tie and against Denmark in the group stage, the striker's contributions have been questioned by some former players and pundits.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT KANE SAID

In an interview with Kane argued: "If you look over the last couple of major tournaments, there’s always been at some stage question marks over my fitness or my form. I think it is part and parcel of it. I always say I want to score in every game. I want to try and help the team in every game from that sense. But also my role isn’t just scoring goals.

"My role is a lot of work defensively, a lot of work without the ball, a lot of work in leadership. So of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I know everyone wants me to score three goals a game and I want to score three goals a game. But it’s not always the case."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane believes that the criticisms often come from those who may not fully grasp the complexities of his role on the pitch. Moreover, he has faced scrutiny over his fitness, having suffered a back injury at the end of the season with Bayern Munich. Former England international Ian Wright is among those to have noted that Kane does not appear to be at his sharpest, leading to discussions about whether he should be dropped from England's starting lineup.

“Maybe, sometimes when I don’t score I think the fitness one is an easy one just to throw in now – ‘why? Is there a reason? Is it his fitness? Is it not?’,” Kane stated.

“But like I said before the tournament, I felt like I had a good preparation going into it, I felt like I’m getting better and sharper as the games go along. Ultimately, it’s just down to me performing on the pitch.

“We have a semi-final ahead of us and of course, I’d love nothing more than to score a couple of goals and get through to the final. So that’s what I’m trying to do, as always do my talking on the pitch.”

KANE ON HIS ROLE FOR ENGLAND

A significant part of the debate around Kane's performance is his positioning on the field. Some, like former England striker Alan Shearer, have suggested that Kane should play higher up the pitch rather than dropping deep. However, Kane has defended his tactical movements, explaining that his deeper positioning is often strategic, designed to create space for his team-mates and disrupt the opposition's defence.

“When I’m dropping deep it might not necessarily be to get the ball,” Kane explained. “It might be to create space for players around me or drag defenders out of their positions and leave space for others. As you’ve seen in my game in recent years I like to get on the ball and turn…I criticise myself as much as anything and I know there have been times in games for sure where I could do better and move better, especially in and around the box.

"Ultimately I do what’s best for the team and I know I’ll always be judged on goals. But if you had said before the tournament I’d have a couple of goals, I’d be in the semi-finals, I’d have bitten your hand off. So there’s a lot of perspective. I understand it. I understand we’re in a major tournament and that at the end of the day, everyone just wants the best for England and wants us to go through. But if you really understand football and analyse football there are different reasons for dropping deep and staying high and that’s what we work on throughout the week, to exploit the other team.”
