Sky Sports: Everton could now sign one mystery player on deadline day

da fazobetai: Everton are running out of time to complete some late transfer business in January, but an encouraging update has emerged, courtesy of Sky Sports reporter Alan Myers.

Everton transfer news

da pixbet: The Blues have had a very quiet month to date during the transfer window, which may cause plenty of frustration among supporters, given the need for new faces. The ongoing takeover situation at Goodison Park is not making it easy in a financial sense, however, with Farhad Moshiri potentially not wanting to invest if his spell as owner is about to come to an end.

Everton have certainly been linked with plenty of players this month, however, with individuals all over the pitch linked with completing moves to Merseyside.

Ajax attacker Chuba Akpom is someone who has been tipped to be a late addition for the Blues, having moved to the Dutch giants from Middlesbrough last summer, struggling to make an impact in a different country and only starting three Eredivisie games this season.

Leicester City defender Harry Souttar has also emerged as a potential replacement for Ben Godfrey, should the Everton utility man seal a move elsewhere before the window slams shut, and highly-rated Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis is also reportedly being looked at as an option.

There is also a small possibility that Sean Dyche could lose players, which would be a big blow in their Premier League relegation battle, with midfield pair Amadou Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure both linked with exits recently. The hope is that both stay put, however, with the hours ticking away.

Everton could make deadline day signing

Responding to a question from a fan on X on Wednesday evening, Myers hinted at Everton making one deadline day signing before the end of Thursday evening, saying: "Maybe one by tomorrow but don’t know who."

Blues supporters may well be buoyed by this update, with added depth something that could be so vital in the relegation fight between now and the end of the season.

Granted, Dyche's side have had to contend with a 10-point deduction in the Premier League – they wouldn't be under threat of going down otherwise – but there is arguably still a shortage of quality in certain areas.

Goals continue to come at a premium at Goodison, with only 24 scored in 22 league matches this season, so snapping up someone like Akpom on deadline day could provide the manager with some priceless extra firepower.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fitness record makes it hard to rely on him for long periods, while Beto has struggled to convince since coming in last year, netting just once in 17 league appearances this term.

It definitely wouldn't be a shock if a late move ended up not coming to fruition, but Myers is a reliable source and the hope is that his prediction comes true, giving Everton a boost ahead of a crucial period in the season.

VERA CRUZ VAI PARA CIMA E PRESSIONA O TIME RESERVA DO SPORT

LEÃO DA ILHA VOLTA DIFERENTE DO INTERVALO E VIRA O JOGO EM DEZ MINUTOS
O Sport volta completamente diferente do segundo tempo.
Gol olímpico e a virada do Sport: 2 a 1. Vale destacar que um minuto antes do gol do Sport, Matheus Serra foi expulso por dar um carrinho violento.

SPORT CONTINUA INTENSO E MATA O JOGO
O Leão não se acomodou com a virada e continuou pressionando o Vera Cruz. A pressão logo deu resultado e o gol saiu aos 25. Vinícius Popó invadiu a área e foi derrubado pelo goleiro Serginho: pênalti para o Sport. O próprio Vinícius Popó bateu e marcou: 3 a 1.

O gol enterrou qualquer chance de reação do Vera Cruz. O Sport administrou a vantagem fazendo o tempo passar até o apito do árbitro.

Everton targeting Barca wonderkid Gavi

Everton must seal a deal for FC Barcelona midfielder Gavi this summer as he could be the answer to their problems and he is better than their current option Allan.

It was recently reported by Spanish outlet AS that Everton are among several clubs interested in completing a move for the 17-year-old. Barcelona were considering offloading the player in order to help finance their re-build and set a price tag of €40m (£34.2m) for his services.

However, they have since been more reluctant to let him go and if Everton don’t move quickly then it could become too tough for them to persuade the club and player.

The teenage sensation is one of the latest products of their world-famous La Masia academy and has made 31 La Liga appearances this season, being directly involved in eight goals. To be having that much of an impact at a big club when he’s so young proves just how good he is. If Everton really wanted to make a statement this summer then signing him would do exactly that.

The Toffees are still battling to stay in the Premier League and transfers will probably take a back seat until their fate is sealed. If they do get relegated, then a move for Gavi will likely be off the table, but he could be a key part of a resurgence next season if they stay up.

Moving to Goodison Park would provide him will lots of game time and he would get the chance to showcase his skills in the Premier League. At Barcelona it’s often hard to stand out due to the level of talent and scrutiny, he wouldn’t have this problem at Everton.

One of the players he could replace in the long term at the club would be Allan. The Brazilian midfielder made the sensational switch from Naples to Merseyside in 2020 for £21.7m where he linked up with former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

He has played a key role since the move, averaging over 25 Premier league appearances in that time. But he is 31-years-old and Everton can’t rely on him forever.

Gavi would make the perfect successor and if you compare the two the numbers prove it. In possession of the ball, he excels over Allan with 168 progressive carriers this season compared to Allan’s 100.

He’s also better at passing the ball with a completion percentage of 89.3% compared to the Brazilian’s 79.9%. With those stats in mind, it’s not a surprise to see his teammate Pedri recently call him an “absolutely crazy” talent.

If they survive the drop then they should do everything they can to sign Gavi, even if it’s initially on loan, he can drastically improve their squad next season.

Tim Spiers’ scary Wolves transfer claim

Wolverhampton Wanderers evaded a transfer curveball from Newcastle United in January when the Magpies attempted to sign two of the Old Gold’s most important players.

What’s the word?

That is according to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers who has claimed that Eddie Howe’s side were intent on signing the Old Gold duo in January, when they were in the depths of a relegation battle.

And even though Wolves managed to keep hold of their defensive assets, they may face a worry to keep the pair across this summer’s transfer window.

In the report for The Athletic, Spiers claimed: “Newcastle are the biggest transfer curveball the Premier League has experienced in some time and Wolves, like everyone else in the league, are distinctly aware of the money the Geordies’ new owners can now offer to try to prise clubs’ star assets away.

“Newcastle have already had an influence on Wolves’ business; it is believed they made enquiries for Kilman and Coady in January, tried to sign Botman and did sign Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon, a player Wolves had been courting.”

A scary summer

With Spiers’ latest report in mind, this summer’s transfer window could come with some scary propositions for the Wolves faithful, with the Molineux side already touted to lose Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Leander Dendoncker and Marcal who have all been linked with moves away.

Therefore, the last thing Old Gold fans will want is to lose their Captain in Coady and emerging star in Kilman.

Featuring as a starter in 88% of Wolves’ Premier League games this season, Kilman has asserted himself as a fully-fledged member of the first team, with his metrics backing up why that is the case. Whilst his defensive participations have been decent this season, it’s his ability in possession that has been valued by Lage. His match average 3.61 progressive carries has injected composure within the Wolves backline.

Paired with captain Coady, who has started every single game for Wolves in the league, the Old Gold have been afforded consistency and solidity at the back, with Lage’s side boasting the fourth best defence in the league this season with just 32 goals conceded as a result of 11 clean sheets.

As such, supporters will surely be incredibly worried about the prospect of yet more interest in the duo going forward.

Whilst it is hopefully not the case, you cannot argue that the project at Newcastle presents an exciting opportunity which is backed up by seemingly unlimited amounts of ambition an endless quantities of financial backing.

The Magpies will most likely continue to get stronger and recruit higher calibre players who are in the mould of Guimaraes. From the perspective of Kilman who is just 24-years-old, the project at St James’ Park could be the ideal way to raise his stock and elevate his game season on season amidst the recruitment of bigger names and better players.

Defiant Mark Cosgrove hundred seals draw for Leicestershire

A defiant century from Mark Cosgrove salvaged a draw for Leicestershire on the final day of their game against Durham at Emirates Riverside. The Australian began the day unbeaten on 21, with his team still 155 runs behind the home side. He battled throughout to keep the Durham bowlers at bay, even using his head on one occasion. Cosgrove held his composure, scoring his first century of the campaign to save his team from defeat before bad light ended the contest.Durham were frustrated in their attempts to claim the victory, although the pitch at the Riverside for once was not helpful to seam bowling. James Franklin’s men remain in contention for promotion, extending their unbeaten run in the Championship to seven games, but they will need raise their game in their remaining matches to beat out their rivals.Leicestershire began the day with Cosgrove and Colin Ackermann at the crease still trailing the home side by a significant margin. The two batsmen were able to see out the first hour with relative ease as the Durham bowlers were unable find life from the pitch.Cosgrove did provide one moment of bemusement in his otherwise untroubled morning, opting to leave a Ben Raine delivery that struck him straight on the helmet. Ackermann found his range to dispatch Liam Trevaskis for back-to-back boundaries before pulling Carse to the fence to bring up the fifty partnership from 139 deliveries. They fended off the threat in the morning session, reaching the interval unscathed, although still with work ahead to erase the deficit. After the interval, Cosgrove continued his impressive stand by moving to his half-century, drilling the ball through the covers to the fence from a short Carse delivery. Ackermann joined his team-mate by hitting two boundaries from the same over, reaching his sixth fifty of the campaign. The duo carried on their resistance, working their way past their century stand, but Ackermann eventually fell to Trevaskis by edging the ball to first slip. The home side attempted to put the clamps on Leicestershire, although Cosgrove remained a thorn in their side. Raine was able to dismiss Harry Dearden, who played down the wrong line and lost his off stump.Nathan Rimmington’s introduction into the attack from the Lumley End produced the wicket of Harry Swindells to give Durham hope of forcing a result at the tea break. Cosgrove and Gavin Griffiths held firm amid pressure from both seamers and spinners in the evening session. Durham captain Ned Eckersley tried to force the issue with time against his team after the visitors had edged into a slender lead.Trevaskis and Cameron Steel struck to remove Griffiths and Chris Wright to put the pressure on. Cosgrove upped the ante to notch his century from 261 deliveries, saving the game for Leicestershire as bad light brought a premature end to the game.

Leeds can forget Buendia with late swoop for "incredible" 15-goal star

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship this evening as they prepare to travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley in a huge clash at the top of the table.

Defeat for the Whites in Lancashire will see their opponents move level on points with them in the division, although it would take a four-goal or higher victory for the Clarets to put them on top due to goal difference.

A win for Daniel Farke’s men would place them four points clear of Sheffield United, who lost 3-0 to Hull City on Friday night, in second place, leaving them in a great position in the race for automatic promotion.

The West Yorkshire outfit beat Norwich City 2-0 in their last match at Elland Road, thanks to goals from Manor Solomon and Dan James, and it is fair to say that scoring goals has not been a huge problem for Leeds.

They are the top scorers in the division, with 53 goals, but Farke is still keen to add more attacking quality to the group, with a reported interest in Emiliano Buendia, but they look set to miss out on the midfield magician…

Why Leeds could miss out on Emi Buendia

Firstly, it was recently reported that Leeds are playing the long game with the Argentina international and have been hoping that the later it gets in the window the bigger chance they have to sign him.

A transfer that would comprise of an initial loan move from Aston Villa with an obligation to make it permanent upon promotion to the Premier League has been touted for the former Norwich City star.

Buendia scored 15 goals and provided 16 assists in 39 Championship appearances in the 2020/21 campaign under Farke, which was their last season working together, to win the league title.

The German head coach may want to work with the Argentine talent again with the hope that he can get back to that form, although the winger was out for almost a year with an ACL injury and only returned last August, which means that it may take time to get back to his best.

Leeds, however, may not have to worry about whether or not Buendia can get back to his best because interest from a Champions League side has emerged.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga title last season, are exploring a deal to sign the midfielder, and are interested in an initial loan with an option to make it permanent in the summer.

It could be incredibly difficult for Leeds to convince the 28-year-old ace to turn down interest from a Champions League and Bundesliga side, competing for major trophies, to return to the Championship, which is why they look set to miss out on his signature as it stands.

If that turns out to be the case and Leverkusen secure a deal for Buendia ahead of Leeds, Farke could move on from his former sensation in a late swoop for Aston Villa starlet Louie Barry.

Leeds United's interest in Louie Barry

The 21-year-old forward is set to leave the Premier League side on loan before the end of the January transfer window. Unai Emery recently confirmed that their plan is to tie him down to a new contract before sending him out on loan for the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, and Middlesbrough have all been linked with an interest in the former Stockport County loanee, as they look to bolster their respective attacks.

Scottish giants Celtic were interested in a permanent deal for the English winger and saw an offer of £10m turned down by Aston Villa earlier this month, leaving them out of the race for his signature.

Emery’s confirmation that the forward will be leaving on loan before February’s deadline will come as a boost to Leeds, Wednesday, and Middlesbrough, although Boro completed a deal to sign Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle last week, so it remains to be seen whether or not they are still in the market for a winger.

Why Louie Barry could be a good signing for Leeds

If the West Yorkshire outfit can win the race for Barry’s signature in the next week or so, Farke can forget about Buendia by signing another supremely talented attacker.

The Argentine winger has failed to provide a goal or an assist in 11 Premier League matches so far this season, which suggests that the Whites would not have been signing the same player who was in the form of his life for the German in the past.

Whereas, Barry is coming off the back of an incredible time on loan with Stockport County in League One. Albeit at a lower level, he is a player full of confidence and could step straight into a thriving Leeds team to hit the ground running, which may not have been the case with a low-on-confidence Buendia.

The English ace, who was once hailed as having “incredible” composure by Declan Rice, scored nine goals and provided four assists in 17 starts in League Two in the second half of last season with Stockport, and made the step up to the third tier this term.

As you can see in the table above, Barry racked up 20 goals and ‘big chances’ created in 23 appearances in League One, which shows that he can adapt his game to higher levels, going from League Two to League One.

He has scored five more goals than any other Leeds player at league level this season, with Joel Piroe currently leading the way for the Whites with ten, which suggests that he has the potential to provide a big goal threat in the second half of the season.

Whilst he has not enjoyed a Championship season as successful as Buendia’s 2020/21 campaign, Barry is an in-form player who could come in and hit the ground running and that is why Farke could move on from the Aston Villa outcast by signing his teammate.

Rob Keogh masterminds first-innings lead, Northamptonshire on cusp of victory

Northamptonshire 198 (Keogh 75*, Roland-Jones 4-53, Bamber 3-42) and 30 for 1 (Hassan 14*, Tremain 3*, Higgins 1-9) need 89 runs to beat Middlesex 149 and 167 (Roland-Jones 37, Eskinazi 37, Tremain 3-41)Northamptonshire closed in on their first LV= Insurance County Championship win over Middlesex since 2010 after the visitors suffered a fourth batting collapse of the season on day three at Wantage Road. The Middlesex top order had misfired in their first three innings since returning to Division One and this was Groundhog Day as they plummeted from 37 without loss to 107 for 7, Chris Tremain the chief destroyer with 3 for 41.A 52-run stand between Toby Roland-Jones and Luke Hollman at least ensured there would be a fourth day but, needing only 119 to win, the hosts closed on 30 for 1, Ricardo Vasconcelos the man to fall.Middlesex’s latest woes with willow in hand came after Northamptonshire were bowled out for 198 on the stroke of lunch, a first-innings lead of 49 with Rob Keogh left unbeaten on 75, Roland-Jones returning 4 for 53 and Ethan Bamber 3 for 42.Middlesex would have begun their second innings with some trepidation and Sam Robson, a man with just six runs to his name so far this season, should have added a nought to that tally, only for Josh Cobb to shell a comfortable catch at fourth slip.Although he and Mark Stoneman battled to 37, the sky fell in once more. Robson was castled by Ben Sanderson and just two balls later Pieter Malan shouldered arms only to see the ball send his off stump cartwheeling out of the ground. Stoneman perished soon afterwards, caught on the crease and pinned lbw as he had been in last week’s loss to Essex.Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden briefly stemmed the flow of wickets, but just five minutes before tea, the latter inexplicably hooked a short ball from Gareth Berg, skying a catch to the grateful Luke Procter at mid-on.If tea in the away dressing-room was indigestible, things would only get worse two balls after the resumption as Tremain uprooted Eskinazi’s middle-stump and in his next over the Australian quick found the edge of Ryan Higgins’ bat presenting Lewis McManus with a simple catch. Not even wicketkeeper John Simpson, often the man for a crisis, could stop the rot, and when he drove another one from Tremain straight to cover, defeat in three days looked likely.Roland-Jones and Hollman eased those fears with an enterprising half-century stand, the former striking the ball powerfully to record a towering six and five fours in a swashbuckling 37.Procter shrewdly called on the spin of Keogh, however, to break the burgeoning stand, luring Roland-Jones out of his crease to be stumped by McManus after which the end came swiftly.Keogh stood head and shoulders above the rest in the morning session to steer Northamptonshire to a priceless first-innings lead. The 31-year-old fresh from his unbeaten second-innings century in last week’s defeat to Kent, made light of gloomy conditions and a pitch which had sweated under covers throughout the previous day when no play was possible.Keogh shrugged off the loss of Proctor in the first over of the day, caught at slip off Bamber to play the only innings of real quality. As wickets tumbled around him, other Northamptonshire batters groping and prodding uncertainly, their middle-order stalwart cut and drove with real authority to move to a half-century from 103 balls with seven fours.Even so, with Bamber and Roland-Jones chipping away, the hosts were only 25 ahead when their ninth wicket fell. It was the signal for Keogh to go on the attack, twice launching Higgins over the ropes for six, both blows ending up on the concourse. His belligerence meant by the time Jack White’s stumps were scattered by Roland-Jones, Northamptonshire’s lead had stretched into the realms of ‘more than useful.’

Shastri expects India to go 'the 2007 route' for next T20 World Cup with Hardik as captain

“He is supremely confident about his own ability – the fact that he is fully fit now makes a massive difference,” Shastri says of Hardik

ESPNcricinfo staff12-May-20235:13

Runorder: Ravi Shastri wants Hardik to be India’s full-time T20I captain

Ravi Shastri feels that with the next men’s T20 World Cup just over a year away, Hardik Pandya will be handed the captaincy of the India team immediately.”Everyone can qualify to play, but I think Hardik will lead,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s . “The next two World Cups [after the 2023 ODI World Cup] are T20 cricket. He’s already [standby] captain of India [in T20Is], so he will continue unless he is not fit. I think they [the selectors] will look into a new direction. There’s a lot of talent among the youth at the moment. You might have a pretty much new team; there will be some new faces if not a new team.”There will be still plenty who played in the last T20I match that India played, but there will be some new faces because what we’ve seen here in this year’s IPL is some refreshing young talent.”Related

  • Shastri: Keep Kohli, Rohit for Tests and ODIs; 'current form' all that matters for T20I squad

  • Hardik 'more than happy' to take over full-time captaincy

  • The Hardik evolution: 'I don't mind playing the Dhoni role'

  • Gambhir unsure if Kohli, Rohit, Rahul fit in 2024 T20 WC plans

Rohit Sharma is India’s designated captain across formats, but he hasn’t played a T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup. KL Rahul was his deputy at the tournament; his last T20I, too, was at the World Cup. In the meantime, India have played eight T20Is, and Hardik has led in all of them with Rohit resting. Of those eight, India have won five, lost two, and tied one.At the last T20 World Cup, India’s intent with the bat had come under scrutiny, not for the first time. In the semi-final, they scored 168, which England chased down with ten wickets and four overs to spare.Since then, India have tried many fresh faces, with good results. And Shastri suggested “the 2007 route” for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then, with Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and some others opting out, India had named a relatively inexperienced side for the inaugural T20 World Cup, and India lifted the trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.”I feel they will go the 2007 route, where they will identify talent, and Hardik will have lots of choices when it comes to the selection,” Shastri said. “Because his ideas will be different; he has played the IPL as a captain of a franchise and seen a lot of the other players. He will have his inputs.”Hardik Pandya has led India in every T20I they have played since the last T20 World Cup•Getty Images

When asked if it’s Hardik then who should have a conversation with the senior players about the future, Shastri said, “Obviously. Because he is the guy who is going to take the guys out on the park. Whatever he says has to be given importance and listened to.”Until IPL 2022, Hardik had no captaincy experience at the senior level. But he created a stir when he led Gujarat Titans, one of two new teams that season, to the title. This season, too, Titans are all but through to the playoffs with the last few league-stage matches to go.The only concern with Hardik could be regarding his workload management, given he is expected to play a big role for India at the upcoming ODI World Cup as well and his struggle with injuries is well known. Shastri said it should not be an issue, given he no longer plays long-form cricket.”It is not that he is playing three formats,” Shastri said. “Everything now is separate. You have Test matches, so the moment a Test series comes, he gets a corridor of a month to rest and recuperate. He is supremely confident about his own ability. The fact that he is fully fit now makes a massive difference. Form plays an important role. When he is fit, then he is arguably one of the best T20 players in the world.”In November last year as well, Shastri had said that “there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain, and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it”.
