Khawaja, Labuschagne and rain knock Thunder out

Heat prevailed and meet Renegades in a knockout final at Marvel Stadium on Sunday

Tristan Lavalette27-Jan-2023Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne emerged from T20 droughts with spectacular half-centuries before rain thwarted Sydney Thunder’s hopes of chasing down Brisbane Heat’s massive total in the BBL elimination final.Kicking off the finals series, Khawaja and Labuschagne combined for a 128-run partnership to power Heat to the highest ever total at the Sydney Showgrounds.Chasing 204, David Warner was in a belligerent mood with 36 off 20 balls to provide hope for Thunder before Sydney’s temperamental weather reared in the seventh over with the home side eight runs short under Duckworth-Lewis Stern calculations.Play was set to restart with Thunder facing a revised target of 90 runs off nine overs – they were already 52 for 1 after 6.5 – but the match was ultimately called off due to persistent rain.Heat prevailed and meet Melbourne Renegades in a knockout final at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, while Thunder’s see-saw of a season ended in disappointment.

Khawaja and Labuschagne smash Thunder

Khawaja’s impact for Heat since returning from Australia duty has mostly been through his captaincy, like when he helped guide inexperienced quick Spencer Johnson in high-pressure moments. He had only averaged 16 in six innings in a disappointing start for his new BBL franchise. But against his old team, who he powered to the title in 2016, Khawaja showed his liking for the big stage and put the foot down after the drinks break with an assault on spinners Chris Green and Usman Qadir. He was unstoppable with a slew of innovative strokes, including reverse sweeps, to devastating effect, but his best shot was a gorgeous straight six off Qadir.Khawaja fell short of a deserved century but his fluency seemed to rub off on Labuschagne, who had struggled with his timing as he played anchor before unleashing some inventive strokes of his own to notch his first BBL half-century in his 23rd innings.Labuschagne, who had averaged just 16 runs with a strike-rate of 104, hit his first six of the season when he clubbed seamer Daniel Sams over long-on in the final over. He repeated the dose three balls later to lift Heat past 200 before his 48-ball 73 ended on the penultimate delivery of the innings. Labuschagne proved a point to critics that his formidable longer format batting can translate into T20 cricket.

Pawson’s horror debut

Thunder were shorthanded without frontliner seamer Gurinder Sandhu, who injured his calf in his last game against Melbourne Stars. The 28-year-old Ross Pawson was thrown into the deep end with a debut in the elimination final.Nathan McAndrew’s struggles in the powerplay led to Pawson coming into the attack in the third over and he was immediately lined up. His first ball was carved through point for a boundary by Khawaja, who then smashed two short deliveries to the rope. A rattled Pawson then dished up a waist-high full toss to cap a 15-run first over in the BBL. He hoped his fortune might change when he returned in the 11th over but it only stirred the ruthlessness in Khawaja, who hit two sixes.Pawson, who had earned his call-up through solid form in local Sydney ranks, did show glimpses of rapid pace but just couldn’t get his length right and finished a tough initiation with 0 for 32 off two overs.

Warner starts fast before rain spoils the party

Unlike his mate Steven Smith, Warner had struggled in his long-awaited BBL return and averaged just 12.6 in five innings. But here, he started aggressively and took a liking to left-armer Johnson by smashing three boundaries in the fourth over. It was the best Warner had looked during this BBL season and he threatened to play a heroic knock before rain intervened to end Thunder’s season.

Quem joga?

Oman Cricket agrees to clear players' dues from 2024 T20 World Cup

Oman Cricket (OC) has finally agreed to pay the members of its men’s T20 World Cup squad the prize money due to them from that tournament, claiming that the long delay in clearing the dues was “procedural”. In a statement put out on Monday, OC said the US$225,000 amount would be disbursed to the squad and support staff by July 2025.ESPNcricinfo had reported earlier this month that players from the Oman squad had not been paid, a year after the event held in the USA and the Caribbean in June 2024.Agreements participating boards sign with the ICC for events stipulate that prize money must be disbursed to players within 21 days of the board having received it from the ICC. That money, the ICC confirmed, had been sent to OC on time, though the latter claimed in its statement “that the delay in disbursement was procedural, dependent on formal post-event clarifications from the ICC, which are typically received after global tournaments”.The players raised the issue of non-payment not long after the event, and matters came to a head last October, at the emerging teams Asia Cup, when the Oman players resolved to take unified action. That led to the players threatening to not play and being told to leave a day before the tournament began.Eventually, 11 of the players from that 15-man squad had their central contracts suspended and most had to leave Oman. As with most Gulf states, residency in the country is tied to employment and, in this case, a number of players had their employment revoked, compelling them to leave the country.Oman Cricket acknowledged that players had raised the matter but said that officials, including chairman Pankaj Khimji “had repeatedly assured the players that payments would be made in full following the ICC’s confirmation of the allocation and structure.” The players contend that the board’s assurances – by that stage already four months late on the payments – had begun to sound hollow. The board blamed the players for escalating the situation and refusing to play, which they claimed put Oman’s international commitment “at serious risk”.”The players had every right to seek clarity, and we were transparent about the timelines involved,” Khimji said in the statement. The players sought help from the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) after being made aware of the avenue by players from Canada and Nepal – who had faced similar difficulties. Khimji criticised WCA’s involvement, saying the global players’ body “misled” the players and “encouraged them to abandon their duties under the guise of advocacy.”The WCA CEO Tom Moffat told ESPNcricinfo: “We are pleased to see that Oman Cricket has put a timeline on paying the players the prize money almost a year after they received the money from the ICC, and almost a year after it should have been paid to the players under the ICC terms of participation.”Every player in the world should be afforded a safe space to raise concerns and advocate for themselves. It’s incredibly sad that the majority of Oman’s men’s World Cup team have lost their careers, employment, and were in turn forced to leave the country for doing so. WCA will always assist players who come to it for help, especially those who are vulnerable or who face with extremely imbalanced and unhealthy power dynamics.”Oman Cricket said it had constituted an internal committee to investigate “the communication gap” around issues of prize money as well as to avoid such a situation in the future. “This was an isolated incident, but it showed us the need for stronger systems,” the board treasurer Alkesh Joshi said in the statement. “We will ensure that players are never left uncertain about their entitlements — but also that professional commitments are never compromised.”

Everton must rue selling Toffees star who's now worth more than Grealish

Everton are in a drastically better position early into the new Premier League season compared to where they were when the 2024/25 campaign kicked off.

Sean Dyche’s Toffees would lose all three of their opening league clashes, conceding an alarming ten goals along the way.

While the defence hasn’t quite been staunch under David Moyes in the early stages of this season, the Toffees do have a promising two wins next to their name from the three contests this time around.

Four goals have been shipped, but an impressive five goals have also been put away with some confidence, as their new leading man in attack, Jack Grealish, attempts to show the Premier League what he’s all about, still, after a bruising Manchester City stay.

Grealish's red-hot start at Everton

Away from the excitement and fanfare that was generated after his Toffees announcement, there would have been some lingering worries in the air that the former Aston Villa midfielder could be a flop on Merseyside.

After all, his time at the Etihad has been topsy-turvy to say the least, culminating in the three-time Premier League winner collecting a mere seven goal contributions last season from his limited first-team chances.

However, there didn’t need to be so many concerns based on his lightning-quick start to life donning Everton blue, with Grealish already only three short of last season’s tally at City, as seen in him picking up a blistering four assists from just four clashes to date. His early season heroics have deservedly seen him nominated for the division’s August Player of the Month award.

The exciting 29-year-old playmaker will hope he can keep this red-hot form up over the course of the long, gruelling campaign, with Moyes and Co more than happy to shell out £50m – as is his price-tag at the end of the loan – to keep him around permanently if he does so.

Everton star Jack Grealish

Amazingly, however, there is another attacker who used to call Merseyside home who has an ever-increasing worth that even eclipses Grealish’s bumper valuation…

The ex-Toffee now worth more than Grealish

Everton have fallen victim many a time to selling players before they’ve reached their peak.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Faces such as Ademola Lookman and Moise Kean immediately spring to mind, who have a combined tally of 107 goal contributions between them for their current employers, Atalanta and Fiorentina.

In Everton blue, they could only muster up a weak 12, in contrast. Thankfully for Anthony Gordon, while he never set the world alight regularly at this boyhood club, he did at least surpass this meagre amount before sealing a £45m switch to Newcastle United.

Dubbed a “delight to work with” by ex-Toffees boss Frank Lampard, Gordon would bow out from his time on Merseyside with a reasonable seven goals and eight assists from 78 clashes.

However, as much as Lampard would wax lyrical about working with him, the manner in which the Liverpool-born attacker left his boyhood club behind did leave a sour taste in the mouths of those on Merseyside.

Unbelievably, it was alleged that the now 12-time England international reportedly skipped training in the midst of the 2023/24 season – which saw the Toffees languish near the drop-zone – to push through a big January move.

Unfortunately for those back in Liverpool, Gordon would go on to be a rip-roaring success at St James’ Park, with a standout 45 goals and assists across 108 Magpies contests to date, even helping the Toon lift the EFL Cup last season.

Off the back of turning into even more of a “nightmare” for defenders to thwart – as he self-professed – Gordon has also seen his transfer value rise to £56m, via Transfermarkt, which is £6m more than man of the moment Grealish’s own price-tag.

In an ideal reality, Everton might well have kept the wantaway winger at his hometown club for longer.

But, with Grealish now in through the door, on top of Moyes also having the likes of Iliman Ndiaye at his disposal, his absence isn’t that sorely felt anymore, with a further hope that the captivating 29-year-old can stick it out permanently down the line to avoid any similar Gordon-style heartbreaks from occurring.

'One of the girls again': Heather Knight on moving on from captaincy

After nine years at the helm, former England captain embraces new beginnings

Valkerie Baynes15-May-2025Heather Knight is looking forward to “being one of the girls again”, closing nine years’ worth of necessary distance between her and her team over the course of her England captaincy.Speaking for the first time since her long tenure as leader ended more than six weeks ago in the aftermath of England’s 16-0 Ashes defeat, Knight said she was still adjusting to the idea of simply being a player in the side.”Lots has changed,” Knight said. “I’ve just been reflecting on a really enjoyable nine years as captain. I really loved it and I’m really excited for the next chapter as well. I’ve had a bit of time to let the news digest and move forward and am quite excited for what’s to come. I’m looking forward to having a little bit more time on my hands being one of the girls again. I’m feeling pretty positive and obviously looking forward to moving on.”As captain, naturally there’s a little bit of water between you and the sides because you’re involved in decision making and things like that. I have a little bit more time on my hands to hang out with people and things like that, so that’s quite exciting.”There’s certainly bits of the captaincy that I’ll miss, but there’s certainly things I won’t miss as well. I love captaining and I think it brought the best out of me as a person and as a player. So I guess now the new challenge for me is how I get my best out of myself when I’m not captain and when I’m playing.”Related

Nat Sciver-Brunt has replaced Knight as England captain and earlier this week, in her first public engagement since her appointment and returning from maternity leave, said she was keen to pick her predecessor’s brain when the squads convene for their upcoming white-ball series with West Indies.”I’m going to be signing her up for a few coffees when we get onto tour and just getting into a few details of captaincy and how she found it,” Sciver-Brunt said. “We’ve had a great working relationship together, obviously being her vice-captain, and I don’t see that changing really going forward.”Apart from some congratulatory messages, Knight said she had only spoken briefly to Sciver-Brunt, who recently brought baby son Theo into the national performance centre at Loughborough to meet the team he and Sciver-Brunt’s wife Katherine, the former England seamer, will be touring with.Knight said: “I wish her best of luck. I said, ‘do it in your way.’ I’m really pleased for her that she’s got this opportunity. I’m there if she needs me. I’m always there as a voice. I’m very much going to get in the background and be there if needed to be called on by whoever and just look forward to focusing on the batting and supporting Nat and the team in any way that I can.”Knight played under the captaincy of Phoebe Litchfield at Sydney Thunder in the most recent edition of the WBBL and featured in the first six rounds of the Metro Bank One Day Cup domestic competition for Somerset, where Sophie Luff is skipper.Moving to the top of the order, Knight has scored 244 runs at an average of 40.66 and strike rate of 90.37 for her county. She has also taken four wickets with her off-spin, including 3 for 7 against Essex, coming out of bowling “semi-retirement” with new England Women’s head coach Charlotte Edwards’ planning to deploy her more with the ball.Knight could be swung into bowling action early for England. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone played her first domestic game of the season for Lancashire on Wednesday following a knee injury which Edwards said had ruled her out of selection for the West Indies series and seamer Sciver-Brunt will play as a batter only for the start of the summer as she continues her recovery from an Achilles problem. Seamers Freya Kemp and Lauren Bell are also out with back and knee injuries respectively and will miss the three T20Is and three ODIs against West Indies starting on May 21.”When I played the first game for Somerset, it was the first time I’d bowled in a match in a year,” Knight said. “I’d sort of semi-retired, I guess. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s another thing to get stuck into in the field.”I’m probably a bit more competitive when I bowl than when I bat. I like to be quite calm when I bat, but when I bowl I probably try and get in a little bit of a battle and a little bit of a fight because that gets the best out of me. I’ll always see myself as a part-timer I think, and try and do a role when I can. But I do enjoy it and I’ve been asked to bowl a little bit more. If I can provide an option and bowl a few overs down, I’ll be completely happy.”Joe Root made a successful transition from Test England captain to batter when he stepped down in 2022 after five years in the role.”He was pretty good as captain, to be honest, had a pretty good record, to be fair,” said Knight during a community event as part of the Net Gains initiative. “I think that gets missed a little bit. I’ll probably have a better record when I was captain – I’ve just done it for a long time – but it is now finding the best way to get the best out of me is a batter.”I’m just looking forward to enjoying my cricket. Not that I didn’t enjoy captaincy, I did really enjoy it, but just being a player and trying to contribute to team wins as much as I can.” IG is the Official Investment Platform of England Cricket. Through the Net Gains initiative, IG and the ECB have invested to open new public net facilities to help grow the game of cricket in England and Wales, supporting under-represented communities and generating long-term real returns for the game and the people who play it.

Man Utd ready to offer Kobbie Mainoo PLUS cash for Real Madrid star with Ruben Amorim unwilling to place trust in England international

Manchester United are reportedly willing to sacrifice Kobbie Mainoo in a sensational part-exchange bid for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde. The Red Devils are said to have put €50 million (£44m) on the table alongside the 20-year-old talent, but Los Blancos see the Uruguayan as a cornerstone of their future plans. Amorim, meanwhile, continues to cast doubts on Mainoo’s role.

  • Man Utd's daring bid for Real Madrid's Valverde

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Manchester United have offered Mainoo plus cash in a bold attempt to land Valverde. The England midfielder has found himself behind Bruno Fernandes in Amorim’s pecking order, leading to frustration about his lack of minutes. Real Madrid, however, are not entertaining the deal, as Valverde is viewed as untouchable in their project.

  • Man Utd midfield options light despite extravagant spending

Manchester United spent over £200m in the summer to strengthen their attack, but questions remain over the midfield. Mainoo had been linked with loan exits before the season, with interest from Newcastle, Bayern Munich and Napoli. Now, the Red Devils’ willingness to include him in a blockbuster swap suggests Amorim is unconvinced about his immediate value to the team, and wants to bring in Valverde to bolster the team.

  • Mainoo wants minutes – Real Madrid want midfield successor

Mainoo still believes his long-term future could lie at Old Trafford but wants regular football, especially in a World Cup year. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have been monitoring him as they look to replace the departed duo of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Despite his potential, Los Blancos’ stance is clear: Valverde is non-transferable and being groomed as a future captain.

Man Utd and Amorim under immense pressure

Manchester United are languishing in 14th and desperately need solutions to avoid another dismal season. Amorim will be under pressure to stabilise results while also managing frustrated talents like Mainoo. Madrid, meanwhile, will keep monitoring young midfielders but are unlikely to budge on Valverde anytime soon.

Denzel Dumfries is now open to joining Man Utd to play for Ten Hag

Manchester United have been boosted by the news that a "dangerous" player is open to joining the club this summer, wanting to move there and play under Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils continue to be linked with new signings on a regular basis, ahead of a summer transfer window that has to be nailed, following a below-par campaign that sees them struggling to qualify for Europe of any kind.

Napoli superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has emerged as a rumoured target, in what could be a hugely exciting piece of business, with the winger potentially not signing a new deal with the Serie A giants. He is seen as the player who could bring an end to Jadon Sancho's United career, following the Englishman's return to Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Napoli forwardKhvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The likes of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen don't look like the forces they used to be these days, with both now in their 30s and lacking legs, and Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot has been backed to seal a move to Old Trafford, possibly leaving his current club on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Cente-back is also a position that needs strengthening ahead of next season, and Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio has been linked with United, being seen as a primary defensive target. The 22-year-old has been integral to his side's Primeira Liga campaign, helping them seal title glory and averaging 1.9 clearances per game across 30 appearances in the competition.

"Dangerous" ace wants Man Utd move

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Denzel Dumfries is open to a move to Manchester United in the summer, eyeing a link-up with Ten Hag in the process.

Inter Milan are willing to "accelerate his departure", with €30m (£25.6m) potentially enough to snap him up, and the player himself "would like" to join the Red Devils, interest which is particularly concrete if Ten Hag reamins in situ.

Dumfries stands out as a superb option for United in the summer window, should a right-back upgrade be looked at, with the Dutchman such an impressive attacking force down the flank. Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are already options there – the former has arguably been one of the Red Devils' best players this season, in fairness – but the Netherlands international could make United more formidable in an attacking sense, with Rio Ferdinand saying of him during the 2022 World Cup: "He's a player you look at and think that he's athletic, can beat people one-on-one.

"It's not just about being there, it's the quality. He's not putting balls in willy-nilly, he's picking people out, those cutbacks have been ever so dangerous. He doesn't mind working at the other end of the pitch, as well. He's been a breath of fresh air for them and a very important player."

This is all assuming that Ten Hag stays put, of course, with his future still up in the air, but if he is United's manager in August, Dumfries would be an exciting addition. At 28, he is around his peak, and 20 assists in 130 appearances for Inter highlights his attacking ability.

However, as per widespread recent reports, Postecoglou and the wider Spurs recruitment team are looking to sign another new attacker this summer after Timo Werner – and one who could potentially fill the void left by Kane after his multi-million-pound move to Bayern Munich last year.

Tottenham are open to offers for Richarlison as well, who is attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, so any name coming in would potentially succeed the Brazilian alongside Kane.

There are few names who have been linked with a move to north London as Spurs eye up new front men. This week, Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri has emerged as a potentially serious target for Tottenham, as some Spanish media sources state they're even in advanced talks.

Youssef En-Nesyri

The Morocco international, who reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals in Qatar with his country, scored 20 goals in all competitions last season and could cost as little as £21 million.

However, his lack of Premier League experience is one small downside. Spurs have names in mind more suited to the hustle of English football, like Brentford star Ivan Toney, but a new target to be mentioned this week is former Chelsea hitman Tammy Abraham.

Roma have apparently put the Englishman up for sale, which has alerted N17 chiefs in their pursuit of a new striker. According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are tempted to make a move for Abraham after hearing he'll be made available for transfer, with the Serie A side set to demand around £40 million to do a deal.

The former Aston Villa forward enjoyed a phenomenal debut season at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring 17 Serie A goals over 2021/2022, but has failed to replicate those numbers since then – partly due to injuries and the form of his teammates.

"I’ve always said that with the right application, work, commitment and mentality, he can become one of the best strikers in the world," said Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini.

"Tammy has incredible potential. Last season he produced impressive numbers. Besides being a great player, being with him in the dressing room is a pleasure – he’s vital for our group.”
